Quote:

The bill says that the military must indefinitely detain anyone SUSPECTED of helping bad guys.

One provision says that the mandatory (“must”) indefinite detention doesn’t apply to U.S. citizens … but the government CAN indefinitely detain any U.S. citizen it feels like without trial, without presenting evidence, without letting the citizen consult with a lawyer, and without even charging the citizen.

In other words, it’s like saying “you don’t HAVE to lock up Joey for the rest of his life because he called you a mean name, but you CAN lock him away and throw away the key and then falsely accuse him of being a suspected terrorist if it would make you happy”.

They will say that American citizens are specifically exempted under the following language in Sec. 1032: “The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States.” Don’t be fooled. All this says is that the President is not REQUIRED to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge or trial. It still PERMITS him to do so.

The ACLU notes:

Don’t be confused by anyone claiming that the indefinite detention legislation does not apply to American citizens. It does. There is an exemption for American citizens from the mandatory detention requirement (section 1032 of the bill), but no exemption for American citizens from the authorization to use the military to indefinitely detain people without charge or trial (section 1031 of the bill). So, the result is that, under the bill, the military has the power to indefinitely imprison American citizens, but it does not have to use its power unless ordered to do so.

Wow, PN. That was a really good commercial. Good for MTV.

As a mother, I reacted to that fleeting scene of the mother parting from her son.

It is one thing to fight and take the chance of getting killed, etc.

It is another thing to fight and take the chance of losing custody of my kids.

I'd rather run.

Pizmo, that was funny, about the hats. :) You got a good sense of humor.

Speaking of famous quotes, isn't that Einstein quote just paraphrasing Edmund Burke's "All that is necessary for evil to flourish is that good men do nothing?"

Evil, in this case, is flourishing, and I believe about to get a lefty signature. I mean left-handed. Also left-wing and sinister.

Here's a second spot of the MTV ad against NDAA

I have to say that I have an additional worry that if Obama signs this thing, which I assume he will, the election is over, and it becomes an "anybody but Obama" vote, shifting all the weight to the GOP primary. Here's praying for Ron Paul.

Unless they rig it, of course.

Hello,

I agree.

Ron Paul is the only person I trust to not use this horrid new law. However crazy he seems, he has certain values he hasn't deviated from. One of those values involves shrinking the government and getting it out of your face.

I don't think he has a chance, though I'll be rooting for him.

Any other candidate will benefit from the continuous leeching away of rights, and likely add more casualties to the list.

I don't think it was made against the NDAA specifically. It came out in 2008, I believe.

I think it was meant to be some sort of general Holocaust awareness campaign.

They never thought it would be prescient.

I'm proud of my senators for having half a brain (because that's all it takes to know that this is a bad idea, a whole brain would have been working the aisles to convinced the others to vote no) to vote no on this bill. Obama better not sign it.

I see why people are jumping to conclusions, one has to be prepared for the worst in life. But I agree with Pismo that none of you guys who say you'll leave will actually do it, or at least very few of you. Its easier to talk about leaving than it is to actually leave, where are you going to go? Well you can't go to Europe unless your recent ancestors are from there, you're uniquely talented at something that they are looking for/have a shortage of over there or you marry someone over there. So you'll have to go elsewhere.

I might leave and take New York with me. It's US law, but it will be hard to apply it in nuclear powers outside the united states.

I'm one of the few I guess.

I see more and more expats, more and more people looking for advice from expats on leaving. So yeah, people are jumping ship. They usually aren't on a forum, announcing where they have left to.

Smart people, come to think of it.

You know what's really ironic ?

With a few minor changes, that is damn near indentically appropriate to the treatment of teens "transferred" to hellcamps.

Again, lemme make this abundantly clear.

THEY DO IT TO THEM, AND IF THEY GET AWAY WITH IT, THEY WILL DO IT TO YOU.

Zero tolerance became the airport shakedown, Cameras became a surveillence society, and now this...
And it gets better - see anyone ELSE standing up against the presence of uniformed officers in schools and the tremendous abuse which has resulted ?

Comin your way, courtest of VIPR, look it up.

Oh, and if yer gonna STOP fighting the moment your own ass is clear, like the pilots union did ?
Get off my side, I've no use for you.

The pilots union was a stunt.

But Frem, I think you've hit on something brilliant here: Kids are the guinea pigs for the society we live in. If they do it to kids, they find out the emotional reactions, and how to manipulate them, and they prepare us for encountering and accepting similar things in later life.

This means that the end goal of society is the public school system. We're all locked in the buildings we work in, and authority figures patrol the halls, ask workers to rat on each other, and we have to ask permission to use the bathroom. As I write this I realize that most of it is already reality.

Okay, so logically, if we want to reverse it, we start with schools, building up different expectations.

I remember as a home schooler hearing kids talk about work and careers as if this would be a grand and glorious thing to evolve into, and then when I got there is sucked majorly. Now I work for myself, because I really have no tolerance for the trappings of a job, being in a building all day with a boss breathing down my neck, but now I see that if I had been in school, I would be, if not used to it, I would have at least come to expect it as part of life.

I think you have an excellent start to a revolution there.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Quite a lot actually - imagine if the pilots union hadn't wussed out the instant they were in the clear, and had continued the pressure and drawn in airlines who were pissed off at the revenue this tapdance security theatre bullshit costs them ?

The key isn't standing up, the key is NOT folding the hand once you've got yours.

Once you've got a stand, and get the powers to be to throw in the towel, DO NOT STOP simply cause you've got yours, but use that momentum to bring others into it and fucking steamroller them, put the pressure on, and keep it on, and I don't mean in ways they can easily dismiss, oppress and ignore, hit them below the belt, play hardball, break the rules.

In this it's not too different from a bar brawl, once the other guy hits the floor you don't just walk off and let him slam a knife in your back, you PUT THE BOOT IN, and make sure of the matter.

Capisce ?
