We'll just put it in a different category and pretend it doesn't exist...

As someone who lives with somebody with Aspergers, this is dispicable. I wish ta god there had been someone to help him when he was a kid, and I can't imagine, now that we know what the problem is- just cutting these kids loose. We KNOW they benefit from treatment!!
Some of them look heathy enough, I'm sure, but inside they can struggle just as much as with any other mental disorder.

Well, it depends on what the criteria they're keeping is. If people who really do have it get it diagnosed and get help, but people who don't have it don't get diagnosed, that's probably not a bad thing.

I had a psychiatrist who was sure I had schizophrenia, because her son had schizophrenia, because I said I had conversations with voices in my head and I hear and see strange things when I'm waking up. But you know, that's not schizophrenia. Most people have multiple internal voices, the problem with schizophrenics is they don't know those voices are aspects of their brain.

I could have any number of things. I might be mildly psychotic, I'm certainly paranoid, I have anxiety and depression, and I might be either schizoidal or autistic. But schizophrenic, I'm not, and I had the paradoxical reactions to risperdal to prove it.

I think its a bit early to freak over this. Right now, falling on "the spectrum" can be a pretty vague diagnosis, and is often overly-used. Especially in the last few years, as people have become more familliar with Aspergers, Ive seen a lot of kids labeled as such for simply being socially akward.

A bit of clarity could be a good thing.

I'm not freaking- I'm angry, and confused. Sweeping the problem under the rug will not make it "Go away" It's still under the rug festering, and those kinda things come back to bite you in the ass.

I'm tired of hearing people say diagnosis of things like ADD and ADHD and Aspergers, ect, is overblown. You can say that freely, because the problem isn't relative to you, so blowing it off is easy. When you are actually dealing with them, it is not soo easy. If someone could put $dollar signs$ to it like with smoking or obesity, then maybe it would be clearer. Don't fix anything that isn't clearly costing society, right? I mean, they're just people lost and in mysery. No big, right? I mean we all are in some way...

Only difference is, you come with instuctions to deal with it, THEY DON'T....

Byte, you definately had a bad psychiatrist, and a bad experience. A good psych would have realized there are many elements of schizophrenia that are common to other disorders as well. I suppose me saying you sound like my husband brought back some bad memories, huh?

Well, I hope that bad experiences won't deter you from continuing to try to understand what your underlying problems are and finding ways to resolve the ones that you don't like living with.

As for problems waking up, so does hubbs. I have to be extremely careful about how I wake him up. A couple times he's come close to a knock-out punch, but I'm pretty quick. At least I realize he doesn't mean it and can't help it...

Oh, I don't think it's overblown at all. Around here, autism diagnoses have risen six times the rate it was a decade ago. I don't think you see that kind of thing JUST on overrepresentative diagnosis criteria, and you also don't see it if it's just a genetic issue. No, there's an underlying problem here I think.

But it's also important for diagnoses criteria to be very precise.

I will shamelessly say overdiagnosis is a problem. I don't care who gets mad at me. As someone with notable mental health problems I can still say that its overblown. If I were a little kid now adays I wouldn't be surprised if someone would try to diagnose me with aspergers. I've been passionate about certain topics all my life. When I was little that was very obvious. I had trouble relating to the other kids and lacked the common types of empathy until I was a little older. If the modern doctors had caught me at age four and observed me they probably would have given me an asperger's diagnosis. But once I was seven I'd learnt how to socialize and had lots of friends, I understood other people's feelings and yes I was still passionate about various topics, that's never gone away, but that isn't a problem. Little kids are all so different and when they're three or four they're all at a different place developmentally. Sure for some kids its obvious from the start there's something different, but for some there are differences and then they grow out of them.

I think having criteria by which to diagnose more effectively is a good thing.

My neighbor with aspergers definitely had clear differences as early as possible, right from the start we knew something was wrong. Wish, why did the military let your husband in if he had Aspergers?

I don't think changing the diagnostic criteria is really going to reduce diagnosis in a good way, the criteria seem good, when to count them as extreme enough for diagnosis is more what doctors should consider.
