There’s no longer room at the inn at a Manhattan church that’s sheltering Occupy Wall Streeters after a holy vessel disappeared from the altar last week.

When the Rev. Bob Brashear prepared for Sunday services at West Park Presbyterian Church on West 86th Street, he noticed parts of the bronze baptismal font were gone.

In a fire-and-brimstone message to occupiers later that day, he thundered, “It was like pissing on the 99 percent.”
In Brooklyn, at another church housing OWS protesters, an occupier urinated on a cross, according to Rabbi Chaim Gruber, who has angrily abandoned the OWS movement.

In a letter last week to OWS obtained by The Post, the rabbi fumed, “The Park Slope church housing occupiers was desecrated when an occupier peed inside the building and the pee came into contact with a cross.”

The pastor of the church did not return calls.

At West Park, Rev. Brashear walked into the church for a morning service to find the 18-inch-diameter bronze basin and lid missing from the baptismal font’s 800-pound base. Holy water — straight from the River Jordan — had been poured from the missing basin insert into the base’s bowl.

About 60 occupiers had rolled out their sleeping bags between the pews the night before as part of their evening ritual, Rev. Brashear recalled. When they returned to the church later, following the pastor’s discovery, he issued a stern warning: “You have 24 hours to find it and to come up with an amends and to come up with a plan. ‘I’m sorry and it won’t happen again’ won’t work,” he scolded.

The pastor and a worshipper finally found the missing basin tossed into a small room connected to the church. The lid is still missing. The pastor has given protesters two weeks to vacate the church.

Why does a Rabbi have a cross... In a church? Are they messianic jews?

As for the bronze basin, it sounds less like it was stolen and more accidentally broken off, and someone tried to hide it. Not necessarily better, but less so much The Farmer and The Viper.

I think that what you wrote is part of the Occupy mission statement. Its really the church's fault. They deserve to be stolen from and have their place trashed. After all, churches are supported by people with jobs...in other words, the 1%.

Doesn't say the Rabbi was AT the church, but only that he commented on the act, and has abandoned the OWS movement.

What does it matter WHO said it anyways? Because he's a Rabbi, and it took place in a church, he can't talk about it ?

So, ... if the rabbi was not AT the church, how did he know about it? Did someone tell him? If so, was it true or just a rumor? If this was heresay, how did he validate that this was true? Rappy, once again failing logic because it conflicts with his world view.

Select to view spoiler:

My guess is that the rabbi was "at" the church as part of the OWS movement and witnessed the event himself, but he was obviously not in charge of the church.

Hee, hee, hee; I DO get a kick out of Rap's obsessions and how much effort he puts into hunting up material with which to tar...let's see...OWS, of course, Obama, of course, essentially ANYTHING "left"--or "left" as he sees it. Yeah; stuff goes on.

A) Is there any PROOF that these things were done by people part of the Occupy movement, or homeless/etc., taking advantage of the situation?

B) Even if it were...gee, out of how many thousands of people?

Now comes the comparison with the Tea Party, which is totally false. While both are upset with the situation, it's been proven over and over that the Tea Party is disproportionately made up of white men who are self-identified conservatives and self-identified Republicans. They held short rallies, played by the rules and went home to piss.

OWS is a much more diverse group; according to surveys, those at Zuccotti are made up of numerous religions, political leanings (mostly "independent"), gender, education, etc. The average age is 33, over half are employed and 13% make over $75,000. I don't know what the numbers there are, but from what I've seen, quite a few, and they stick around, rather than going home after a couple of hours. So of course there are going to be incidents.

Go for it, Rap...by the way, I'm not calling you "Raptor" any more, I admire raptors, and "Rap" fits perfectly, given the image that comes to mind. Just sayin'. I can almost write your response for you, as can most of those here, so have at it. So enjoy hunting up stuff; given the time you spend here, you must sift through material for something to post and spew your venom here, and little else. So far be it from me to interfere with your fun.

Show me where in the story there's anything which disputes what I said. The Rabbi clearly was at one time behind the movement, and now is no longer.

Which "world view " of mine is in conflict ?

You really should brush that chip off your shoulder and deal w/ the topic more, instead of trying to vilify and attack others.

"In Brooklyn, at another church housing OWS protesters, an occupier urinated on a cross, according to Rabbi Chaim Gruber".

The story is unclear as to whether the Rabbi SAW the act, was there, and heard about it, or is simply repeating what others had told him, OR if this one act was what turned him against the OWS gang, or was just another oh, by the way for the Rabbi, who had already left the movement, before hand.

So apparently, in your eagerness to vilify the OWS movement it doesn't matter whether this urinating incident actually happened, or was a lie, or an exaggeration. That's what I'm saying is typical of you: You don't care about what ACTUALLY happened. You make no attempt to ferret out the truth behind the statement. You just care that people agree with you, or that you agree with them, even if the two of you agree about something completely fictitious. So the rabbi left OWS, you agree with him, and therefore he must be correct. Which is why you can completely swallow what Bush/ Gingrich/ Limbaugh/ Beck says... blatant hypocrites and liars that they are. Because you never try to match up what they say with reality. For you, there is no such thing, there is only opinion. Or more accurately- belief. Which is why you will try the same thing over and over and believe the same people over and over despite getting crappy results.

Do you remember that story about Saddam's soldiers ripping babies out of their incubators in Kuwait? Horrible, wasn't it? It was completely false. So was the Gulf of Tonkin incident: complete fabrication. So were the WMD and yellowcake stories. Get used to the idea that not everything you read is true, especially not on FOX News (which has a much higher incidence of provably false stories) but not from ANY media. Fly and be free.

Sig - the NY Post says, in a letter sent to them, that's what the Rabbi said.

It's laughable that you're trying to some how pin this all on ME, and what I " want " to be true, when the facts are simply the church in question suffered vandalism via the OWS gang. A Rabbi has left the OWS movement, for what ever reasons he felt were valid, which may be JUST that one event ( I doubt it ) or may have had nothing to DO with urinating in a church/ on a cross, or what ever.

Seriously, step back and take a breath and just look at how silly your position is on this matter.

Yellowcake happened, no question.

Lots of atrocities took place in Kuwait, but I don't have a damn idea as to why you're bringing these things up.

Did the church in question tell OWS folks to leave ?

Did the Rabbi Chaim Gruber abandon the OWS movement ?

It's not just that SignyM

The basin was first reported 'stolen' with great consternation and fanfare. Those godless SCOUNDRELS! Then it was found >in the building<. OOOPS! Scratch that 'stolen' by godless SCOUNDRELS! claim! Perhaps 'moved' would have been a better word. Then it was reported 'vandalized'. Now, if a house gets tp'd it's not something that could happen by accident. You could reasonably say it was vandalized. If one window in a car is broken it could be an accident. If they are all broken it was clearly vandalized. The basin wasn't clearly vandalized. So perhaps 'broken' or maybe 'damaged' would be a better word.

It's probably not that SOMEthing didn't happen. It's that the NYPost can't get its story straight, not even from its own version on one day to its own version on the next, let alone its versions compared to reality.

And then, well, little Rappy gets so easily confused. What can one say.

Sure I do, and there in lies the great difference between the 2 groups. TEA party folks have a grand total of ZERO arrests at their functions, no vandalism, no urinating on religious symbols.... hell yeah, I'll side w/ the good guys every day.

And Sig, post as many irrational , idiotic replies as you want, but there's nothing even you can say which will change the facts, that the OWS thugs have outstayed their welcome, with quite a few people who showed them hospitality. And THIS was how they repaid those kind acts? Not much of a defense, is it ?

And 1kiki, the NY Post DID get the story straight, but you're such a zealot and a gullible myrmidon for the OWS clowns, you don't want to see it.

The facts are undeniable. The church in question gave the OWS protesters time to pack up and get out, and rabbi Gruber abandoned his support for the OWS movement. Don't care who the hell you hear it from, because it seems you're not going to buy news that's not to your political liking, no matter what.

The basin in question, was moved, with OUT the permission of anyone in the church, and it was damaged. Regardless if the sequence of events, and BECAUSE it was moved w/ out the knowledge or permission of the church, it was FIRST though to have been stolen. The NY Post got the story right. That it was found later, in a closet, doesn't undo the fact that the OWS dirtbags were F'ing around w/ stuff which wasn't theirs, damaging it, and showing no where near the proper respect of those who opened their doors to help them out.

Get YOUR head out of your ass, and wake the hell up here. Stop trying to blame this all on the NYPost, as if they had anything w/ the OWS goons for being who they are.

Unless you can show that ...

The West Park Presbyterian Church on West 86th Street, did NOT give the OWS protesters two weeks to vacate the property...

Or that Rabbi Gruber did NOT abandon the OWS movement.

and that the basin in question was NOT damaged, I'd say you own the NY Post , me and everyone else a sincere apology.

Until then, kindly STFU.

Thank you, Riona. I don't know whether it's true or not, could be either. Given the plans to damage OWS in numerous ways (remember the memo, folks??), it's perfectly possible for a plant to do whatever they think will bring bad press. On the other hand: what Riona said. Such things happen around the country...and far worse, but it possibly being an OWS protester, that's fodder for Rap, pure and simple. I don't think it's so much that everyone's convinced it's not true, as it is automatic response by most people here to Rap's being so convinced it IS and so badly wanting it to be. You know how that goes...

Niki,

You mean like how the msm & the Dems falsely blamed the T E A party for the nut job who shot Rep. Giffords ? And in fact STILL do, to this day??

( except in this case , the ows goons really ARE to blame )

Odd, there weren't any such reports of vandalism with ANY TEA party rallies... Well, not so odd at all, because there were no such acts. But Nancy Pelosi sure did whip up some phony tears and fretted of such violence. And when there IS real vandalism? ". God bless them! " - N. Pelosi ( D CA )

So, when anyone ever posts a fact which , no matter how true, doesn't jive with what you wish were true, that's humping any old smelly factoid ?

Really ?

I'll make a note of that.

Oh hell, rappy, everyone knows you have a closet-full of smelly factoids! I noticed BTW that both stories have just faded away. There is a pattern I noticed with stories... when they come on with a splash and then fade away... well, there's often an "oops" behind it. Nobody has to guts to print a full-out retraction, they just kind of slink away and distance themselves. I was willing to give credit to the stories, but now I'm wondering.

But these aren't the same 'facts' so breathlessly posted by little Rappy.

"Holy vessel DISAPPEARS ..." (completely GONE!) "... an occupier urinated >>>ON<<< a cross ..." (musta' been aiming for it according to this version) "... baptismal font that was VANDALIZED ..." (and not merely "disturbed" to quote the pastor).

But yanno', with no further follow-on information (police reports, anyone?) I suspect this set of 'facts' is disappearing fast.

No need for any retraction when the story is 100 % accurate. Why should a car accident on highway 5 get reported on, day after day ? Good grief, your ability to contort reality to fit your little world is truly amazing.

1kiki - You're simply repeating the same story which was originally posted. Redemption fail.

Well, one of the interesting parts of one of the articles, missed in the initial flurry, was the facts that the "reporter" was the same person who had dubbed the Occupiers as 100% partiers and who had failed, unlike most reporters, to even obtain a statement from "the other side". Plus ... no police report? Maybe... er... the second "missing" item reappeared, along with the first?

It's shit like this that tells you about a story, son. The timing, the tempo, when it appears and disappears. Like...

SAY, HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT LIBYA LATELY?

And, why not?

Again, you contort, twist and dismiss anything away which isn't to your liking.

Unbelievable.

If a reporter SEES a group of people partying, he doesn't need to get a quote " from the other side ", as it's pretty self evident that they are, in fact, all partying.

Nothing you've said cast any doubt on the validity of the story, that the OWS kiddies were asked to leave the church, or that some have abandoned their cause.

Nice try, but it's time you admit defeat in this nonsense, and " move on".

I emailed both the Post and CBSNewslocal for follow up, asking them if a police report had been filed, if the Occupiers had been identified definitively as suspects or were they just named b/c they were there (and ignoring everyone else who was also present), requesting information on the reporters (no reporter was listed for CBSNewslocal which makes me think they simply repackaged the original story without doing any field work of their own), and indicating there was significant interest in the story. I even wrote to what looked to be the police precinct for the Church. I got nothing.

Makes me wonder what kind of 'reporting' went into the story.
