Apparently what ended up happening was the Gov caved and rewrote the bill "behind closed doors", and the Repubs said "no rape ultrasound, no bill!" (Clearly showing what they were ACTUALLY after!), then wrote ANOTHER bill with forced regular ultrasound.
Quote:

The House of Delegates passed a substitute bill late Wednesday requiring doctors to perform the more routine external "jelly on the belly" ultrasound to determine the stage of the pregnancy before performing an abortion.

Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel, a Republican who sponsored the original bill, decided to withdraw the Senate version of the bill, effectively killing it, when it became clear that the governor's position had shifted, legislative assistant Tricia Stiles said.

Jezus, what have we come to?

I DO like Sen. Janet Howell's proposed "amendment":[quoteShe offered an amendment to require doctors to perform a rectal exam and cardiac stress test on men seeking medication for erectile dysfunction. That measure failed.

Gee, big surprise!

I can't believe all this is happening, in America, in this day and age, AND that the American public is allowing it, AND that some of the American public actually AGREES with it! What an incredibly sad state of affairs...

Did I miss something? Has the universe shifted and we're now moving BACKWARD in time or something?

The part I just can't wrap my mind around is...how is it constitutional to force a women to get a medically unnecessary procedure in order to get an abortion, which she legally MUST be allowed to get.

Can anybody explain the legal tightrope being walked here? Is it just that these things are new that they havent been challenged in court yet?

Im pretty sure this isnt the only state in the country to have pushed this kind of law...

Hello,

I thought (external) ultrasounds were already routine procedure before abortions. I recall my ex-wife got one before her procedure.

Or is there language in the Bill forcing the institute to make the mother watch the image or some such?

You did miss something. The country is being infiltrated by radical fundamentalists. They are getting into office by offering rhetoric to angry, frightened people, and then they are imposing their radical, theological positions upon the laws of this land.

And people worry about Muslims? *shakes head*

What I've been saying all along when righties crow about the 2010 "landslide". Tho' I wouldn't say "infiltrated", they're already here, just "given power" to impose their will on the rest of us.

Screw Sharia law, we are seriously in danger, if we continue on this path, of being run by "Evangelical Law". Scary as hell...they both share an equal desire to keep women powerless, and if this continues, who knows where we go? I never thought the American people would tolerate this kind of thing for an instant...but then, it IS about women...

And yes, numerous other states have not only contemplated this sort of thing, in a number of them it's ALREADY law, and a number of others have it in the works. Some of them DO require the woman to watch, others don't. Perhaps you're in one of the states that already has it?

You're missing something, Anthony; these are women seeking ABORTIONS, in which case an ultrasound is totally unnecessary. It's just more of the methods the anti-choice crowd has found to make abortion as unpleasant, shaming, and difficult as possible...which they've proven amazingly effectie at!

Hello,

Now I am wondering about that Ultrasound. At the time I assumed it was initiated for medical reasons, to check for complicating factors.

In addition to all other indignities, was state imposition of shame heaped upon them all?

I'm sure there's a mirror quote offered up by the fundies that starts with:

"You did miss something. The country is being infiltrated by radical, godless socialists..."

Deep, deep, doo doo.

No woman should be forced to have an ultrasound for whatever reason.

Bring back the lions!

I swear, again... folks talk about how the puritans came here fleeing religious persecution, but no one else wants to talk about how rightful, how justified, that persecution was.

And they whinge about being 'persecuted' (i.e. not getting their way 100% of the time) now despite being allowed to stomp all over the First Amendment with their bloody boots by people who have so accepted their abuse its fallen beneath their consciousness.

For half a pence I'd SHOW em what persecution really WAS, oh yes indeedy.
Of course that just feeds the cycle of revenge, sure, but that primarily cause no one ever seems to have the will to finish the job.

No Puritans = No Problem.

Hello,

I'd no sooner use violence or oppression to wipe out one group over another.

However, I will gleefully hold up frightened fools to be frightened fools, and let truth and shame wither them under the scrutiny of the public whom they clamor to control.
