Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Interestingly, I couldn't find anything about this on MSM websites. I wonder why?
Quote:

Rick Santorum's claim that the Netherlands advocates mass murder through involuntary euthanasia has prompted a furious backlash from the Western European country, with local news sources calling the Republican a "crazy extreme" candidate making up facts to stir up his political base.

"Rick Santorum Thinks He Knows the Netherlands: Murder of the Elderly on a Grand Scale" fumed the headline of the newspaper NRC Handelsblad on Saturday.

The article references an interview, barely played up by the American press, in which Santorum claims that euthanasia makes up "10 percent of all deaths" in the Netherlands," and that many of those people were essentially murdered by the state.

"Half of those people are euthanized involuntarily, because they are old or sick," Santorum told social conservative leader James Dobson earlier this month in an American Heartland Forum.

"And so elderly people in the Netherlands don't go to a hospital, they go to another country," he continued. "Because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, that they will not come out of that hospital."

Rick Santorum also asserted that elderly Dutch citizens, in an effort to stop themselves from being killed, have taken to wearing bracelets that read "Don't Euthanize Me," an assertion that prompted gasps from the conservative crowd.

In reality, public statistics, which have been recorded since the practice was legalized in the Netherlands in 2002, report that roughly 2 percent of all deaths in the country are due to euthanasia. The idea of "involuntary euthanasia," meanwhile, is baffling to residents of the liberal state, implying as it does patients wheeled off to die the moment their vitals drop.

But after incredulity came anger, and plenty of it.

"Rick Santorum is an archconservative," the piece, translated by Dutch blogger Bertine Moenaff, begins. "The most conservative of all the candidates in the Republican primary race. He loathes abortion and euthanasia."

"So now, he loathes the Netherlands," the article continues with an acid wit. "Because in the Netherlands, we kill the elderly like there's no tomorrow."

The author, credited as Niels Posthumus, accused Santorum of shoveling on "baseless 'facts'" to support his erroneous conclusions.

"This man is really imaginative," Posthumus concludes. "It would be a laughing matter, if he weren't in the race for the Republican nomination to take on Barack Obama in the race for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world."

Nor is the Dutch daily paper the only news source gunning for Santorum in the aftermath of his comments.

Dutch public broadcaster Radio 1 called Rick Santorum's assertions evidence of "fact-free politics," and its coverage has caused the story to be picked up by many of the Netherlands' national media.

GeenStijl, an offbeat publication, dismissed Santorum as a "crazy extreme Catholic," while PowNed TV remained baffled by his "surreal view of the Netherlands."

Rick Santorum's campaign has yet to respond to the backlash his euthanasia comments have caused in the Dutch media. The offending interview can be seen below. http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/301702/20120220/rick-santorum-euthanas

At a time when the Republican candidates have no compunction about telling outrageous lies, and our acceptance that they will do so, this stands out as even more amazing than I would have expected. The man is telling flat-out lies, not once being called on them, and of course his audience believes him and will parrot what he's said endlessly. We have TRULY become a joke to the rest of the world!

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It's good to see that at least one candidate is reaching out and putting his best foot forward to achieve good international relations.

This guy could put free will back 100 years for all Americans. I admit I'm not usually very political, but this guy has me perturbed...

If I don't die of a heart attack or stroke, which is fairly likely in my family, but get a cancer they can't fix like my dad, I will euthanize myself. There is nothing "natural" about that kind of death. Fate steps forward and rips life from you. I do not want that.

I don't much care what Ricky thinks of Euthanasia per se.
If he says, "Half of those people are euthanized involuntarily" and
"so elderly people in the Netherlands don't go to a hospital; they go to another country."

The Dutch have every reason to get mad at him.

Maybe he hoped to make a point, such as "Bad countries murder their elderly, but I would never do that here."
Maybe he wants to stir up public opinion. Create new scapegoats for his rants?   *shrugs*

This sounds fake - I don't have anything good to say about him but, why is he even talking about the Netherlands? Does he even know where they are?

Yep, guess he did. Why? Why does he care about what another country wants to do in this case? I think I know what this is - it's when everyone he comes in contact with all day says, "gosh you're the greatest!" he starts believing anything he thinks is priceless, he can't wait to open his mouth and make gold.

Goodness gracious, anyone has to ask "why"? The answer is obvious, and I'm sure if we saw the text before he started talking about Holland, it would be ovious. He's making the comparison with regard to the non-existant "Obama Death Panels", and of course the Dutch are prime examples of "socialism" he can hold up to cause people to gasp. I'm amazed anyone had to even ask.

It's patently obvious: "If you let ObamaCare stand, we'll have forced euthenasia by the death panels. See how it's happened in Holland. If you elect ME, on the other hand..."

What gauls me about it is he can get away with saying it, his audience bought it and will go home and spread it, then dismiss any refutation as either a lie, the "lame-stream media" slant, or nothing, since the MSM seems to have virtually ignored it, so it will continue to reverberate among his base. The lengths to which the politicians this year are able to lie outright, blatantly, and not be held responible is astonishing. All they have to say is "it wasn't meant to be taken as a literal fact" after the fact--their audience, meanwhile, believes every word. Just listen to the gasps and "wow" you hear on the link Pizmo put up--they swallow it hook, line and sinker! THOSE people will never hear the facts, and will go on believing what he said is true...and the figures he gives are ABSOLUTELY FALSE, not to mention the "facts".

I know I've only been around just over 60 years, and only aware of politics maybe 30 of those, but I've never seen anything like it before.

In OR, if you are going to die in the next six months, you can ask for something to take and you will be given it, you take it home and can take it when you choose to. I'm okay with this. I wouldn't want the criteria to get any wider though because I don't believe it would be right. But I'm okay with what we have now here in my state.

I've always found it interesting that the Netherlands has two names, Holland and the Netherlands. I personally love the name "The Netherlands" because it is beautiful and sounds like a fantasy realm. It isn't in real life of course, I'm just talking about the name itself.

I think 2 percent is a bit high for shoice poison deaths.

I was thinking that myself. Especially because with scenarios like this a lot of it may not go reported.

I doubt it's anywhere near 10% of the deaths in the nation though - the population of the Netherlands is aging and they're having trouble funding their pension plans because of it. This would not be possible if they were killing off their elderly at this rate.
