I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Rappy, I know that you think that because we're not running around with our hair on fire, that we don't notice what's going on. Indeed, we do. And I for one even consider it a significant problem, one that should be addressed... by the military, if necessary.

But there are some things that we have done as a nation that have really set back our national security, like getting rid of Qaddafi and Saddam. I know you feel they are despised dictators, but yanno what? The ME is FULL of despised dictators... I dare you to find more than four nations in the ME that aren't ruled by one sort of dictator or another. And more importantly, those two leaders were SECULAR dictators.

If you want to pull the fangs of ME extremism, you have to shut them off at the (oil) tap: Saudi Arabia. Yes, that paragon of a modern tolerant Islamic monarchy (ahem! not really!) has been funding madrassas all over the ME and the Horn of Africa for DECADES now... at least since the early 1980s.

I'm confident that we can assure our own internal security - for the most part. There will be occasional terrorist acts, but they won't throw us for a loop if we don't let them. We will investigate who we need to investigate (heard the FBI is best at this, the rest of Homeland Security is a money-pit), prepare ourselves, see to our energy independence, and ally ourselves with friendly nations and friendly movements in foreign nations. If Afghanistan treats women badly then we donate to RAWA. But unless there is a real genuine call from inside a country for help, and we are pretty sure that the rebel movement won't itself become yet another problem, let's just sit it out. We don't need to go poking our nose into every godforsaken piece of the planet, do we?

If Islam is such a pig-in-a-poke as you seem to think it is, even if some nations swing that way eventually the people will rebel.

But what's also interesting is, as long as any religion (such as Christianity) is NOT the Law of the Land, we don't have

Christian terrorists have attacked Catholics and Jews from time to time. Are Christian terrorists strictly fringe
groups with no place in a conversation about book burning and riots?

You know why we went to Afghanistan, so why are you asking me ? HOW we're going about it, and our objectives NOW, is a different issue. Israel doesn't exclude other religions as we see in so many Muslim countries. WE have a Constitution, where the rule of law, not men, are in place. Or at least that's the idea.

And as for the ME, we've known all along that it was full of despots and dictators. I knew back in the early 80's, when 1 expert made it clear that Saddam was no 'good guy', but we had to take sides w/ him, to counter the Iranian threat. Sometimes you need a different sort of evil to fight evil .

Donating to causes seems to be a huge waste. I submit the Food for Oil scam, which was perpetrated by the UN, and might very well be the biggest scam in human history, outside of the Catholic Church. Then there were all those funds and resources raised to help save Africa ( again ) and virtually none of it ended up in the hands of those who needed it. The war lords simply snatched it all, as is so often the case w/ that continent.

And it seems the best, most economical way to put the squeeze on the ME is to deplete their significance in the world oil market. You do that by ( sorry Barry, but it's true ) drill, drill and drill some more. Open up ANWR, speed track the XL pipeline. Approve more drilling on federal lands, as well as open up shale oil reserves. You want to drop the profits going to the ME ? Flood the market with as much oil as we can, drop the price, and see how those princes and Sheikhs deal w/ their citizens then. Maybe they'll have to actually allow some of those funds to truly trickle down into the population, instead of hoarding it all, with their expensive cars, yachts, palaces and such. THEN we may see attitudes change in a hurry, but not until then.

Hello,

In the same 10-12 year period it would take to exploit the indicated oil reserves, we could decrease our consumption of oil by the same amount while pursuing methods that do not endanger natural resources.

Since both oil and the natural resources of this country are a finite resource, reducing our consumption is a more logical course of action than increasing our production. Our reliance on oil will eventually need to approach zero, but increasing production does nothing to achieve that goal.

It is important also to note that decreasing our consumption has an identical economic impact to increasing production. The available oil supply will increase due to our decreased consumption, thus affecting world prices in the same way.

Between reducing consumption and increasing production, only a reduction of consumption deals with our long-term goals- goals which are dictated by both preference and necessity.
