That IS what it's become. The mysoginy and the new laws have the result of making women second-class citizens in many ways. Some of the GOP goodies:
Quote:

1) Republicans not only want to reduce women's access to abortion care, they're actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven't yet. Shocker.

2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to "accuser." But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain "victims."

3) In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (Yep, for real.)

4) Republicans want to cut nearly a billion dollars of food and other aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.

5) In Congress, Republicans have a bill that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.

6) Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids' preschool program. Why? No need, they said. Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.

7) And at the federal level, Republicans want to cut that same program, Head Start, by $1 billion. That means over 200,000 kids could lose their spots in preschool.

8) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.

9) Congress just voted for a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.

10) And if that wasn't enough, Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program. (For humans. But Republican Dan Burton has a bill to provide contraception for wild horses. You can't make this stuff up). http://www.mecklenburgdemocrat.org/index.php?option=com_content&vi
ew=article&id=78:top-10-shocking-attacks-from-the-gops-war-on-women&catid=28:local-news&Itemid=188
is not a war? Then what IS it?

The following is a transcript of our own beloved Barbara Boxer on the issue:
Quote:

the blunt amendment is a radical amendment . it would not only take away the ability of women to get contraception through their insurance, but it would threaten every single essential health care service, every single preventive health care service. if your employer or your insurance company had a moral objection. so let's say you work for someone who believes prayer is the answer to all diseases. you won't have any insurance. it is a radical departure from what we've always done in this country which is to give a conscience claus exemption to religious institutions and religious affiliated institutions. but not allow someone to say, for example, you know i think if somebody is overweight and they get a heart attack , that's their problem and i have a moral objection. therefore, to making sure that they can get health care after a heart attack . this is how radical the blount amendment is. but here's the thing i want america to understand. we are on a highway bill , a transportation bill . a bill that has come out of four committees with strong ? bipartisan support. 2.million jobs are at stake. there are so many construction workers out of work because of the housing downturn. we want to put them back to work. and what's the first amendment that republicans put up? a contraception amendment, which they say is about religious freedom which has nothing to do with it because president obama has taken care of that. in a grand compromise which catholic charities support and the catholic health organizations support and catholics united superior. so that's taken care of. they're just radical and going after women 's health. that's the truth.

All you have to do, for example, is look at the republican presidential election . the republicans are caught up in this right wing ideology. and they can't stop themselves. honestly, until women just get their attention as they did in virginia where they backed off of actually mandating an invasive procedure , they finally had to back off of that. some politician there said his wife threatened him she would never talk to him again or something if he did this. the fact of the matter is, these republicans can't help themselves. they've turned into a right wing party. it's fanatical. it's turning on the women of this country. when you have senator snowe saying what she did and she is a moderate republican , the last of the wonderful breed of people that i've worked with for many years on many issues saying that these polarizing issues have no place in these debates, she's absolutely right. by the way, today she came out against the blunt amendment . i'm so happy about that. http://video.msnbc.msn.com/martin-bashir/46576924/#46576924

Go Babs! They talk about how this contraceptive thing is a "distraction" from the important stuff. Well, if it's a distraction, why the hell put it in a transportation bill?? Why the hell is Congress now working on a bill to repeal Obama's compromise on the contraception issue, immediately, wanting to bring it to a vote tomorrow? We all know why, of course, but next time you hear them decrying how this has "distracted" business, ask 'em that!

One pundit said:
Quote:

The Blunt Amendment is not gonna pass, and everybody in the Senate knows that. The purpose of it is to give some moderate Democrats a way of appearing to vote against the mandate...

The other purpose of this is Blunt, who was regarded as one of the more moderate, deal-making Republicans, look more palatably conservative if he decides to run for leadership

Distraction? What distraction?

The truth, as I see it, is that the GOP is anachronistic and wants to take us back to when women had no power; it seems to fit with their mentality but I sure hope we can STOP them!

Yeah, it's startling to see where they're going with this shit. What woke the patriarchy, I wonder? Seemed the Beast was being well appeased with all the wars and destruction, but now they need to go after Mom again?

Not long ago, the Republicans at least had a clue that alienating the black/Latino/female vote were bad for business, so they kept their mouths shut and acted as if they cared. It's as if they've given up trying to be viable candidates for national office. Is it because the plutocracy has simply taken such a firm hold on our system that the entire Republican Party has realized THEY JUST DON'T NEED THE (REAL) VOTES TO WIN ANYMORE?

I think the reasons are easy to see. They won what they thought was a "mandate" in 2010, and by winning, they got the majority in numerous states' legislators and governors. So they "went for it" while they had the power to do so--"overreach" as it's called. Thus far it's worked, sadly. Will the pendulum swing enough to bring us back to...well, I was going to say "sanity", but instead I'll say "whatever semblance of sanity there WAS in politics"?

What you don't hear about is the conservatives' long-term strategy. When you understand that, you understand how short-term elections are easily subsumed by long-term goals. As one pundit put it, conservatives never minded throwing a candidate here and there under the bus, because their long-term goals are more important.

Don't wanna thread-jack this one, so I'll start a new thread which hopefully will help some others become educated, as I have been, about the situation.

Not So!

The term Suffragette wasn't heard much when I was a kid. I credit them with the 19th Amendment.
Along about the 60's & hot into the 70's, the Women's Lib Movement raised shouts loud and clear.
It made me aware of abuses that I never realized because they were simply part of my reality.

We've come a long way, Baby. Then we relaxed. Are in danger of being shoved back. The battle for freedom

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello Niki,

My gut reaction earlier when you first posted this thread was to call a 'War on Women' an overstatement or exaggeration.

Recent events have left me doubting that position.

I don't understand it. Logic tells me that as the older generation dies off, we are left with more and more reasonable people who grew up with fewer attitudes and customs that diminish, belittle, or disempower women.

But then I look at the endless stream of anti-woman conservative thought, and it occurs to me that the young, as well as the old, are holding these reprehensible positions.

And so the torch of inequity was somehow passed to a younger generation that should want no part of it.

I have no idea how to snuff it out.

Then you haven't been listening to me very well.

Not to say I toldja so, but... I toldja so.
Seriously folks, HOW long have I been makin noise on this one, that no one seems to ACTUALLY listen to ?

It ain't about all that petty stuff they hide it under, it's about the fact that Women HAVE rights, and they mean to undo that first by demonising and oppressing, and then eventually playing the see-they-can't-be-trusted card.

And then, Minorities, you watch, sure as day follows dawn.

And again, the way to counter it is to NOT let them mangle future generations humanity into twisted, darker clones of themselves, by offering them OTHER OPTIONS, even if that means breaking with tradition and established orders, even if it means breaking RULES made by people with fell intentions who made them to protect those intentions.

Yeah, Anthony, weird isn't it? I put it down to the conservative's long-term strategy toward women, and that strategy fitting perfectly with hard-core religious leaders who are pushing it in their own way--do remember that The Church has long and vociferously attempted to keep women down in order to maintain their power. They started getting active a while back, thought they had the perfect puppet in Bush when they only had a PARTIAL puppet, but the right getting into power in 2010 gave the idea power again.

Some of these things are beyond asinine, and those legislators who brought them up deserve public ridicule. And then to be voted out of office.

But I have to take exception to the over all tone and wording of this pasted article. Nit picking only GOP candidates, of which most likely are rogue individuals who are introducing bills to satisfy their personal issues, don't speak for the GOP in general.

( Que the expected, knee jerk reaction from the usual suspects )

Points 8 and 9 are particularly inflammatory nonsense.

Quote:

8) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.

9) Congress just voted for a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.

Really ? Republicans are " aiming " at the elderly ? Going back to the childish, moronic demagogic line , that GOP stands for GET OLD PEOPLE ?

And oh yes, let's not touch that newly constructed 3rd rail, Planned Parenthood!!

Look at the deficit. The numbers don't care who the hell grew it, that's not the point. The problem we're faced with NOW is making cuts, across the board, to save this country.

It's not personal, it's just basic math.

Get over it.

"What you don't hear about is the conservatives' long-term strategy."

Feed hate. Feed a persecuted identity.

Conservatives have been pounding on this for decades - literally. Too many decades ago to want to number, when I was in college, there was the 'Campus Crusade for Christ'. Notice the implications of the name - a sense of being an embattled but righteous tiny minority. It's been the same ever since. The issues change - guns, war, authority, religion, money - now birth control - but the tactics remain the same.

The right actively fosters the authoritarian sensibility in susceptible individuals to its own ends. It does so by feeding egos and paranoia - you are right, your are righteous, you are a minority.

And by demonizing the opposition.

BTW - what I find so wildly, hysterically funny in their attacks is how they mirror the authoritarian psyche - STOP HERO WORSHIPING OBAMA! As if any of us do here.

Unfortunately, as the rich have gotten more powerful and people have gotten poorer, increasing economic stress will cause the message to appeal to more and more people. They will want someone to blame. And what better target to create than poor people or government? It keeps the heat off the leeches.

When it comes to this PARTICULAR flare-up of right-wingism - the anti-woman, anti-black kind - you have to remember that

1) It's been there all along. It was muttered among friends, it's only more public now. And ...
2) Women of the new generation in particular have not had a whole of experience with sexism and discrimination. In MY day I was TOLD the university I attended did not accept women into medical school. I was TOLD my application for an electrician or pipefitter apprenticeship would not be accepted on account of being a woman. Perhaps this generation needs to have a taste of it to figure out what the problem is.

See, I'm fond of women, not just in the predatory hormonal sense most men are, but as humans, as people, individuals with a wide variety of thoughts and perspectives, as co-workers and allies...

Reducing them to chattel, removing their personhood would take this from us, a precious gift whos value most men wouldn't even realize till it was gone.

And I will have NONE of it - this attempt to strip them of their personhood, it flies in the face of all that I am, all that have ever wanted or believed, that ALL humans should be treated as human beings, as people.

I mean, I've made it clear enough where I stand in regards to treating youth as subhuman, property, objects - is it really any less than obvious trying to strip hard won personhood away from ANYONE would push my berserk buttons ?

For me, it ain't about womens rights, it's about HUMAN rights - for all and everyone, and unless a right is universal, unless it's all or none, we're right back to feudalism and a class society, effectively a tyranny any way you slice it.

Nicely put - I agree. It's become very fashionable to get nostalgic about traditional values, forgetting that those values included women being treated as inferior beings.

some of the reasons why feminism became the thumping, shouting force it became was to change things like, women

being barred from most professions
being unable to access contraception unless married and then only with their husbands permission
being forced to leave work because they married
being unable to own or inherit property, or having to hand over all property rights when they married
being unable to enter many venues without being escorted by a man
being unable to join most professional and sporting clubs
being unable to say no to sex with their husband
being paid less to do the same job simply because they were female

WIth traditional values, women like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman would not have come to hold positions of political power. They'd be home cooking the dinner, relying on their husband to make good with their career.

No federal funding need be sent to Planned Parenthood, if that's what you're asking. Yeah, that's my view. Sorry if you think my libertarianism is only being displayed because the Left LOVES PP, but I really don't care.

Can you imagine the media firestorm if a conservative made a sex joke about Michelle Obama on television that also demeaned her husband?

On HBO's Real Time Friday, during a sketch deriding Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum's views about sex, host Bill Maher
joked about the former Pennsylvania Senator's wife using a vibrator (video follows with transcript and commentary)

I am appalled to learn this.
I consider myself a Liberal, because I put human rights and planetary-health management far above the creeping NeoFeudalism,
which must be turned away. I truly believe that the GOP would lead our country into (more) disaster.
I also believe in personal integrity and honesty, justice and fair play.

Apparently Liberal and Conservative men can walk hand-in-hand in the war against women. So when I get around to signing

Bill Maher regularly calls women "bimbos" and makes fun of their appearance. Is he a liberal or a libertarian?

Oonjerah

So I read the article.

I don't think the two situations are entirely equivalent for a number of reasons.

Fluke is a private citizen and so gets a higher level of protection than the various PUBLIC PERSONAS in the article.

Many of the supposed 'sexist' statements could have been made about either sex ('crazy eyes' is not necessarily female), or, with a small switch of words could be or have been made about either sex (to criticize a woman's 'flabby arms' is about like criticizing a man's beer belly).

Many of the statements are one-off or single word, unlike the EXTENDED, AT LENGTH, REPEATED AND DEFENDED spew of Limpball.

Many were quickly apologized for, again unlike Limpball.

Taking it all into account, I find NONE of examples of the supposed verbal liberal war on women stand up to Limpball's example or to the ACTUAL legislative war on women taking place in many states and in the House of Representatives.

Are some liberals sexist? I presume so. Do they compare with Limpball, his droid little Rappy, and their ilk? Hardly.

Bill Maher targeting Santorum's wife doesn't enrage you? She's fair game as a political figure?

OK. I see the difference between making sexist comments about a private citizen and those who choose to be in the public eye.

Suppose we have a sexist liberal loudmouth, and suppose same person habitually ridicules members of the opposition,
which appeals to many listeners/viewers, instead of discussing policy. If I am politically responsible and active,
trying to communicate with people about how to improve the situation for all of us, then a sexist liberal loudmouth
is a bigger threat to My Cause than Rush Limbaugh. If I am going to speak up, I don't want to be considered an ally
of someone like Bill Maher.

I like it when super-conservative, male chauvinist pigs make fools of themselves. But liberals are supposed to stand up
for human rights. And bad manners do not become them.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Yeah, I can see you have a point. Not.

Bill Maher

(as supposed Santorum tweet) “Wife spends forever in the bathroom. Since when do Lady Gillettes buzz?”

Limpball

“So Miss Fluke, and the rest of you feminazis, here’s the deal. If we are going to pay for your contraceptives, and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you post the videos online so we can all watch.”

"(when I) said she's having so much sex, she's going broke buying contraceptives and wants us to buy them. I said, "Well, what would you call someone who wants us to pay for her to have sex? What would you call that woman? You'd call 'em a slut, a prostitute or whatever."

That has sent them into orbit! Pelosi's in orbit and Sheila Jackson Lee. They're still talking about it on the House floor. The Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee sent out an immediate fundraising letter with a picture making me look like Dracula. I mean it is... (laughing) I've got the original story here that all this feeds off of, so all of you sit tight. Look, at least I didn't call her "a woman driver," and I'll tell you this, you people on the left: I'll happily buy her all the aspirin she wants. Snerdley, you would agree. We would happily buy Sandra Fluke all the aspirin she wants. What could that possibly cost. But contraceptives? So much sex at Georgetown?

The headline: "Sex-Crazed Co-Eds Going Broke Buying Birth Control, Student Tells Pelosi Hearing Touting Freebie Mandate -- A Georgetown co-ed told Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s hearing that the women in her law school program are having so much sex that they’re going broke, so you and I should pay for their birth control." Cybercast News Service. So what would you call that? So I called it what it is. And, bam, boy, you nail these people with the truth! So I'm offering a compromise today. I will buy all of the women at Georgetown University as much aspirin to put between their knees as they want. Well, here's the thing about that. Where are all these guys?

Is it any wonder, Clinton wanted to go to this law school and why Hillary went to Wellesley? Is it any wonder? Where are the guys here? Do they not have a role here? We assume they're having sex with guys. (interruption) Well, we're talking about birth control, Snerdley. So you gotta assume having sex with guys. So, do they not have some responsibility? (interruption) Well, two women... I have to ask sex expert Snerdley on this, but I'm not aware that two women without another device can get pregnant on their own using naturally endowed accoutrements. I don't think times have changed that much. (chuckles)

Now, I am 61. Maybe something I haven't heard about that two women together would need contraception. That's a whole new ball game if that's the case. But I don't think we're talking about that. So it means there are men involved and that would mean there's some responsibility on the part of the men. Do they not have condoms? Why don't these women go ask the men to buy them contraception? Why go before a congressional committee and demand that all of us -- because they want to have sex any time, as many times and as often as they want, with as many partners as they want -- should pay for it? Whatever, no limits on this. I mean, they're going broke having to buy contraception! They're getting back-alley pills, folks. That's what this leads up to.

I want to go back and get this out of the way 'cause I'm sure that there is voluminous tune-in today to hear about this controversy that has arisen with my blunt talk about Sandra Fluke. We've run some numbers on this. According to Planned Parenthood -- and they should know -- birth control pills cost between $15 to $50 a month. So, at most, that would be $600 a year. What is Sandra Fluke buying? We then -- I didn't do this, but a member of the staff well-versed in these matters went to Amazon to check the purchase of condoms. And essentially what we found is that you could buy the equivalent of using five condoms a day for $953, and if you paid for it at once you could get free shipping. And everybody's in a hurry here. So free shipping would matter. Nine hundred fifty-three dollars. So Planned Parenthood, $600 bucks a year. Condoms, $953 a year.

Up on Capitol Hill at Pelosi's hearing, thousands of dollars a year. But they want it free. They want the contraception free. I know condoms are free, if you know where to go get 'em. I don't know where to go get 'em free but Snerdley assures me that they're free. (interruption) There is an iPhone AP to find free condoms? For New York City. Well, cool, okay, there you go. So we're not even talking $953 with free shipping. Keep that in mind while we're listening to this thousands and thousands of dollars in taxpayer dollars to satisfy the sexual habits of female law students at Georgetown.

Now, here's the story that started all this. It's by a guy name Craig Bannister at Cybercast News Service: "A Georgetown co-ed told Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s hearing that the women in her law school program are having so much sex that they’re going broke, so you and I should pay for their birth control. Speaking at a hearing held by Pelosi to tout Pres. Obama’s mandate that virtually every health insurance plan cover the full cost of contraception and abortion-inducing products, Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke said that it’s too expensive to have sex in law school without mandated insurance coverage. Apparently, four out of every ten co-eds are having so much sex that it's hard to make ends meet if they have to pay for their own contraception, Fluke's research shows." And of course what's sex if the ends aren't meeting?

But Fluke presented research to the committee: four out of every ten co-eds are having so much sex that it's hard to make ends meet if they have to pay for their own contraception. Have you heard of anything more ridiculous? This is flat-out thievery. It's outright ridiculous that taxpayers should pay for the personal sexual desires and habits of everybody, including women, at Georgetown Law. Fluke reported: "Forty percent of the female students at Georgetown Law reported to us that they struggled financially as a result of this policy (Georgetown student insurance not covering contraception)." The poor babes have to buy their own pills. What has gone wrong with our country? What has happened to our country where law students have to buy their own contraceptives? What has happened to us, folks? What have we done with our hearts? How did we become so cruel?

How did we become so heartless? Require each other to pay for the contraceptives of the women law students at Georgetown? Sandra Fluke reported to Pelosi: "It costs a female student $3,000 to have protected sex over the course of her three-year stint in law school, according to her calculations. 'Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school,' Fluke told the hearing. ... That’s a thousand dollars a year of sex -- and, she wants us to pay for it." Now, what does that make her? She wants us to buy her sex. She wants us to pay for her sex, and she went to a congressional committee to close the sale.

It's the right place to do that. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Where do you think the insurance companies forced to cover this cost get the money to pay for these co-eds to have sex? It comes from health care insurance premiums that everybody else pays. There isn't anything free. "'For a lot of students, like me, who are on public interest scholarships, that’s practically an entire summer’s salary,' she complains." A thousand dollars, $3,000, practically an entire summer salary that they now have to spend on sex. So she earns enough money in just one summer to pay for three full years of sex, and they're full years because she and her co-ed classmates are having sex nearly three times a day for three years straight, apparently.

Well, that's what the numbers add up to! We've run 'em here: $953 for condoms on Amazon. That's a year. That's close to a thousand bucks. Why aren't condoms provided free by this stupid policy? Why only birth control pills? No, I'm not advocating. I'm just asking the question. At $1 a condom, if she shops at CVS pharmacy's website, that $3,000 would buy her 3,000 condoms or a thousand of them a year. We've done all kinds of research on this. And what about these deadbeat boyfriends or random hookups that these babes are encountering here, having sex with nearly three times a day? While in law school.

If Fluke is gonna ask the government to force anybody to foot the bill for her friends' birth control, shouldn't it be these guys? Who pays for the abortions? Oops! We already know that, too. So that's where this all started, that story. That's where it all started. A woman who goes to law school at Georgetown goes to a congressional hearing where Pelosi is (crying), "I'm going broke having sex! I need... I need the government to provide me condoms and contraception. It's not fair." Okay, so this is a law student at a congressional committee asking for us ... to ... pay ... for ... the ... things ... that ... make ... it ... possible ... for ... her ... to ... have ... sex.

Therefore we are paying her to have sex.

Therefore we are paying her for having sex.

We are getting screwed even though we don't meet her personally!

What would you call this?

Are we supposed to believe that it's impossible to find free condoms in Washington? And it's a good question. Where are the guys that these women at Georgetown Law are having sex with? Where's their responsibility? I mean, these guys are gonna learn (if they haven't already) they're gonna be buying a lot more for sex than just birth control pills. Why the exemption here on birth control pills? What makes birth control pills so unique that the insurance company -- government, somebody, taxpayers -- has to provide this? We all know the answer here. This allows them to talk "women's freedom," and "women's reproductive rights." But it's also the expansion of government.

Let's listen to some Sandra Fluke. By the way, did you know CBS ripped me for calling Danica Patrick "a woman driver." What is she? Is she a male driver and I've missed it? What is she? Look at what's happening to our language. I called Danica Patrick "a woman driver..." (interruption) Well, because she had said that she thinks the government is perfectly responsible in making these decisions for us; she trusts the government. I said, "Well, okay, she's a woman driver. That makes sense." What is she? Here's Sandra Fluke before this committee, the House Democrat Steering and Policy Committee Hearing on Contraception."

I couldn't make it all the way through that, Kiki, tho' I appreciate you posting it. I couldn't help HEARING Rusbaugh's voice saying it, and that was just too unpleasant. But certainly point taken: He did a monolog, not a word or sentence or even paragraph. That's what he's there for, that's his job; stoke up the hatred. And gawd knows he's good at it.

I can't imagine anyone reading all that, knowing it came out of his mouth, and not being thoroughly disgusted and unwilling to defend him. But then, there's Raptor...who probably will. Or slide around it with "yeah, but there are even WORSE on the left..."

Oonj, definitely. If there were his equal on the left, I would despise them just as much. I didn't like Olbermann because in my opinion he went too far...I don't like Schulz for the same reasons. I often don't like what Maher says. But in my opinion, of any and all I've ever heard, Limbaugh is the very worst, and long has been. JMHO.

Magons, I don't know about where Raptor is, but in California and other states, it IS illegal to text while driving--in Ca., even being on a cell phone while driving is illegal. Doesn't stop anyone, and if it's illegal in his state, I'm sure Raptor doesn't care any more than all the idjits I see here doing it illegally.

Okay,I forced myself to read the whole thing. And my stomach is still churning. I don't know where he got that "original story", but the story is equally bullshit. "So much sex"??!?! If one is on birth-control pills, one has to take them once a day, however much sex--or NONE--one has, you have to take them daily for three weeks out of the month, every adult female knows this. So how do they figure this means they're having "so much sex"?? It's pure crap.

So is most of the rest of it. To ask where the guys are in taking responsibility is ridiculous. I wonder wht the proportion of guys actually use condoms or any form of birth control...guys can have sex and walk away scott free; women can have sex ONCE and get pregnant. Guys don't NEED to have the responsibility, 'cuz there's no down side for them (unless they can be chased down to pay child support!).

I'm sure to Limbaugh, $50 a month is nothing, but given the kind of debt these kids come out of university carrying, and how expensive living somewhere to go to college is...hell, $50 a month isn't something I could easily come up with, and we're not that uncomfortable! I pay $56 a month to Save the Children for two sponsorships...sometimes that's tough. I wonder how much Viagra sets our "insurance premiums" back?

That argument is also stupid. There are things some people get for medical treatments that insurance covers which others don't have yet we all pay the premiums. Should obese people not get this or that med because they "choose" to be obese...or end up diabetic; how much does THAT cost the rest of us? It's just absurd.

The whole thing is asinine, and nowhere does he mention Fluke talking about her friend with the very VALID health condition and what she suffered by not being able to get contraceptives. Pure crap, and using the "orignal story" to base it all on is unadulterated bullshit...if he had any sense of responsibility he'd have checked into the testimony, or maybe even read TWO articles on it, and any second article would have been more real than what he quoted. Hell, given his job, he probably DID know the truth, maybe even hunted up that ridiculous article to use as an excuse, we can't know.

But it is unequivocally a rant of the most disgusting kind, and typical of Limbaugh. It's not even funny, it's just unadulterated grossness and using Fluke as a toy with which to make hay with the base.

I'm confused by this rant. What is it he is trying to say, that this woman is asking the government to pay for contraception, or that she wants the student insurance policy to cover contraception???? It doesn't make sense.

I'm not sure what the biggie is about insurance paying for contraception, including condomns. Health insurance pays for all sorts of stuff I consider frivolous, people's sports injuries for a start. I mean sport is a recreational activity, why should another non sports playing insurance payee foot the bill because some idiot wants to chase a ball around the field with a whole lot of grown men chasing them.

More people engage in sexual activity than play sport. Some even do both. Contraception is a health issue, if you can get your head around the fact that most people, probably even this commentator, have 'frivolous' sex that is not intended to lead to pregnancy and that unprotected sex can lead to a wide variety of sexually contracted diseases, as well as pregnancy. Is this man suggesting that treatment for sexually contracted diseases not be covered under insurance? The pregnancy and child birth not be covered?

It just doens't make sense to get all ranty over this issue.

Magons, it boils down to this. Employers are required to provide health insurance coverage in some cases (I forget what the parameters are, in some cases for people who work more than three days a week, for example). There is an exemption for churches that the health coverage they provide doesn't have to pay for contraception. The whole thing is about religious-AFFILIATED employers, such as universities, hospitals, nonprofits which are AFFILIATED with churches, not part of the church itself. That's what the whole idiocy is about.

It's not government-provided health insurance, it's employer-provided. In most cases, the employer pays part of the insurance premium and the employee pays part (more and more the employees are paying more of it). But the Republicans and religious leaders are adamant that even religliously-AFFILIATED organizations should not have to pay for health coverage with contraception included. Amazing such a huge battle of such a thing--if it makes your eyes widen, go back to my explanation of our Puritanical values.

What's funniest (or saddest, depending on how you look at it...) is that something like 89% of CATHOLIC WOMEN use birth control and most of those of all religions in America have no problem with contraception. Also, Obama tried to compromise by making the insurance companies pay for the contraceptives, without them tagging it onto the premiums of religious-affiliated organizations. MANY religious authorities in numerous religions felt this was a perfectly acceptable compromise, and that would have been the end of it:
Quote:

Following the announcement by President Obama that his administration will ensure that women have access to insurance coverage for birth control while accommodating employers who object to providing birth control, Catholic hospitals and other institutions have said that they support the policy. But Fox News refuses to tell its viewers that the policy has widespread support, instead pretending that Catholic hospitals and other employers are being victimized.
Catholic BISHOPS and evangelical PREACHERS, of course, screm it's armageddon and a "war on religion". It's essentially a political football, nothing else. The right wingers are using those in the religious community as tools to try and make this about "religious freedom", which is asinine.

Like I said, there aren't necessarily any consequences to a college student who convinces a girl to have sex without a condom. He can walk away and has no responsibilities unless she gets pregnant and hunts him down for child support. Yeah, they should take responsibility....but if you were a university student, would you trust a fellow student to? I sure wouldn't! I took birth control pills from the time I lost my virginity, even tho' for two years after that I did everything BUT the sex act (for reasons of my own). I wasn't going to take any chances, and as we all know, you can't just pop a birth-control pill one night if you figure you're going to have sex!

There are many reasons women are prescribed contraceptive pills tht have nothing to do with sex:
Quote:

That being said, my GYN put my oldest on BC pills when she was 16 (31 now), because she had some terrible periods, would be out of commission for the first several days, and was becoming anemic.
The friend Fluke mentioned a medical condition which mandated contraception medically, but she was refused coverage and suffered as a result. NONE of this is taken into account--some places SAY they'll let women have coverage for them if it's a medical necessity, but Fluke's story was a perfect example of how they DON'T, they weasel out of it.

I don't think condoms are covered under most health insurance, tho' they should be. Viagra, however, IS convered almost across the board, absurdly. Ergo; it's a "medical necessity" to ENHANCE male sexuality, but not a medical necessity to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Make sense of THAT one, if you can!

ETA: That's really a good point about sports injuries which I hadn't considered before. Sports are "recreation", something people do for fun, so why should insurance cover THAT?! You can go on all day if you want to sift what is a "medical necessity" and what is not--and viagra definitely would NOT go in the "medical necessity" column any more than contraceptives. Yes, some men need it as medicine, just as some women need contraceptives--but contraceptives for women aren't allowed even when medically mandated by their doctor, so the same should be true for viagra. Yes?

By the way, if you needed any further proof that this whole kerfluffle isn't about contraception, this incident should suffice. The Catholic church was up in arms because they didn't want contraception, yet here are all these right-wingers screaming about condoms, thereby proving that they don't really have any problem with contraception - they just have a problem with WOMEN making the decisions about contraception. On Friday night’s airing of the show, host Bill Maher took a shot at one of the left’s favorite targets, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, by contemplating her reaction to the tragic events that have unfolded in Japan over the past nine days. …

“Did you hear this – Sarah Palin finally heard what happened in Japan and she’s demanding that we invade ‘Tsunami,’” Maher said. “I mean she said, ‘These ‘Tsunamians’ will not get away with this.’ Oh speaking of dumb twats, did you –”

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"BECAUSE THEY'RE OVER THE COUNTER ,MAYBE ??
GOOD FRACKING LORD, some of you folks are complete , brainless zombies!"

Am I the only one who finds little Rappy's brain to be missing? Just b/c something is OTC doesn't make it any less medical. Blood glucose meters are OTC. So are crutches, blood pressure cuffs, wheelchairs, exercise bands, and a select small number of other items that are BOTH OTC AND COVERED not only by insurance but by Medicare and Medicaid. So if SOME OTC items are recognized as legitimate health expenses - why not others?

In a nutshell, Pizmo, in a nutshell.

Kiki, you're not alone, in fact there are probably few here who DON'T recognize that OTC medicines are often covered by insurance. I just got one last month, and Medicare paid for the co-pay, my insurance for the rest. It's okay, we all know the intellectual quotient of Mr. Raptor's brain, so we just ignore it.

Yep, that was Rush all right.

Well hell, why don't you just post the transcript of his entire 3 hour show ? Or why not do one better, and post the full WEEK'S worth of transcripts ??

You mean "this few comments"? The ones Rush kept coming back to and expanding on over the course of three days? Yeah, that was probably just a little slip of the tongue.

The issue is free birth control not being a 'right'.

Can you please show us all where anyone has said that free birth control is a right? Your mistake is that you keep mixing up "free" with "paid for" and "covered by insurance".

This few comments Rush said ? Being completely blown out of proportion? Nothing but a mass hysteria from the Left ( yeah, I know where hysteria comes from... gonna accuse me of hating women for using THAT word too ? Go right ahead, it fits your M.O. ) to distract everyone from the REAL issues.

You'd NEVER do anything like that.

Right?

Almost certainly not. I also heard the same "quote" attributed to Rick Perry about a year ago.

Actually, lots of insurance DOES NOT cover OTC medicines at all. And HSAs *CAN'T* be used for them, which really sucks, because I used to use an HSA, which was great because it would cover chiropractic, over-the-counter medications, etc., which is the vast majority of what I use for healthcare. As long as you were using the HSA for treatments of basically any sort, it was tax free.
