The New Orleans Saints admitted Tuesday to paying bonuses for hits that would knock opposing players out of a game, vowing the practice won't be repeated.

Saints Head Coach Sean Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis said they take "full responsibility" for the practice, which they said "happened under our watch."

"These are serious violations, and we understand the negative impact it has had on our game," Loomis and Payton said in a statement issued Tuesday evening.

"Both of us have made it clear within our organization that this will never happen again, and make that same promise to the NFL and most importantly to all of our fans." More at http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/06/sport/saints-bounties/index.html?hpt=hp_

This really sickened me when I heard it. Upon reflection, I realized it's really just an indicator of where we've been going for a long time, and I"m not surprised it didn't happen sooner. Maybe it has, we just haven't heard about it. And I'll bet dollars to donuts all the "apologies" and "it won't happen again" are merely because they were CAUGHT!

I had to chuckle at the news anchor who reported this, saying that football player were being PAID to hurt other players!

O.o

Well, duh!

j/k But seriously, that stuff has been going on for a while in the league. Just not so blatant and out in the open like this. Use to be all very hush hush. I guess after you get use to doing business like that, you just accept it as how things are done.

No you don't have to accept it.

The Saints organization should be stripped of every win the team had during every season this took place, including their Superbowl win. They should also lose their draft picks for the upcoming season, and have the teams over all salary cap reduced at least for this year.

Football is not about hurting people, anyone who tells you different is dead-ass wrong.

I was referring to the coach who was paying the bounties, and how it became second nature to HIM to run his little show like that with his players.

Again, you're not understanding my point.

The one doing the illegal bounties is the one who got too comfortable in what he was doing. He got away with it, while doing the same thing with other teams, so he was more open about it with the Saints. HE got use to it, and because he didn't get in trouble, it become HIS norm...

He got sloppy. And then got caught.

Any of this getting through to you ?

Yes.

He got caught, and as such he and the team should be made examples of to help ensure that the practice is stopped.

One can hope - it was pretty well known the Buffalo Bills used to do this, and the hip injury which took Bo Jackson out of football was indeed a "bounty hit" specifically intended to cripple him personally, that as much as the injury were what convinced him to give up on football.

Me, I threw in the towel on the whole damn thing a long time ago, between corrupting the World League games by stacking the deck with "NFL Enhancement" players, killing off instant replay, and a game "winning" superbowl field goal that CLEARLY missed oh so conveniently right AFTER killing off instant replay so that shoveljob would fly.
Didn't help matters none having accidently caught the handing over of a bribe on VHS tape and sending it to the league only for it to be ignored, neither - wish to hell I'd kept a copy of that tape or sent it to the media instead.

I imagine you're right. In which case, I'm glad he got caught and I hope anyone else doing the same faces the music. Jeeez, like football isn't dangerous ENOUGH!?

I stopped watching it, tho' I was a hard-core Raiders fan into my twenties. Back then, they could be down 21 points and pull it out in the last fifteen minutes, and Kenny Stabler was poetry in motion. I switched to the 49ers when Jim and I got together, back before they won several Superbowls, went to their parades when they did won--but they're a teem that can be UP 21 points and manage to LOSE it in the last 15 minutes. Eventually I just got bored with the whole thing and stopped watching. There are much more interesting sports.

The tackle that took Bo out was a bang bang, freak of circumstance, and hardly a 'bounty hit'. The guy who took him down , from Cincinnati, was grabbing at anything he could to keep Bo from taking off. It just so happened that he grabbed his ankle, in a manner which Bo's momentum and body weight caused the injury to take place. If the hip didn't give, his knee would have. Many still wonder how his knee didn't give. While it would have been far more painful, it may have allowed him to come back. But the hip injury... there was no convincing needed. His football career was over, period. His hip had to be replaced. He did come back , for a while, and play pro baseball. With a artificial hip. Homered his first time at the plate. But he was never the same. Can't come back from that sort of injury and make a living in professional sports. Not even Bo could do that.

KWICKO

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Guess y'all have never seen "North Dallas Forty", eh? From the book written by a former Dallas Cowboy, Peter Gent? Yeah, he pretty much laid all this kind of stuff out way back in the 70s. It wasn't an uncommon thing to try to take a player out of the game, or worse.

You can try to outlaw it, but there's always someone who's willing to try to find a way around such rules and regulations, or who will outright ignore such rules.

I got nothing.

And I'm fairly certain that instant reply is still in use. Maybe not used effectively, but still...
