Freedom is Important because People are Important

Quote:

While I was at the site photographing the billboard, I asked a few local people what they thought of the billboard in their neighborhood. None of them wanted to be identified but they all told me they were not happy about it. They told me they felt it was disrespectful and insulting but they agreed that the American Atheists have the right to put up their billboards where they want.

In addition, they also told me that they too have the right to advertise and voice their opinions and will most definitely be doing so.

Hello,

I'm not terribly fond of proselytizing atheism any more than I am proselytizing religion (sorry, God. I figure you don't need any pushers.) However, I feel that everyone should have the freedom of speech in this country.

Apparently, the Muslim community agrees.

Never forget what this man is. You keep forgiving him his trespasses and speak to him as though he is a reasonable human being. You keep forgetting the things he's advocated. If you respond to this man again, you are being foolish.

Yes. In THIS country. But for those elsewhere...

Not so much.

Well duh.

Not all muslims are radical nutjobs, nor are all christians...
But... yanno the fact that those who ain't gotta TELL people that means the moderate elements of either have done a piss poor job of representing themselves and casting these asswipes out.

That falls under free speech, so they have the right to put it up. How do billboards work in regard to private property? If you put one up you have to have permission from the property owner right? Or is it on public property so it doesn't matter.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The billboards are usually owned by an advertising company. The COMPANY has to get permission from the city (usually) on whether, where, and what kind of billboards they can erect, and also pay a lease to either the (private) landowner or the city. The company which has erected the structure then sells advert time.

I doubt that atheists actually "put up" a billboard; more likely they paid for time on a billboard that was already there.
