Hmmm...wouldn't the opposition claim credit if they'd done it, saying something about still being able to go after the capital? Would Al-Assad actually set off blasts killing innocents just to give credence to his claim of "terrorists" being behind all this? Obviously he has no problem wiping out his own people, even women, children and innocents, but it's a conundrum. I would think if the opposition had done it, they'd have claimed responsibility...

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I think we are allowed to know very little about the people who are protesting the Syrian government, just as we knew very little about the anti-government forces in Libya and the mujahideen in Afghanistan.

Who are they? What do they really want? Does anybody know? This is another one of those blank spots in the news coverage that sway people's sympathies... The poor people of Homs! The big bad Syrian dictator whats-his-name!... when in reality the alternative may be worse than what's already in place.

I know that the Xtian minority supports the current Syrian government, because they feel the replacement would be brutal repressive Islamists. Other than that, I don't know. But at least I KNOW I don't know, and so I'm waiting for more information before I decide who I'd support- if anyone. It's entirely likely that neither side is worthy of support.

Please keep in mind that the explosions could have also been set by an outside provocateurs - which include the USA as a possible suspect- to keep the pot boiling. I know that provocateurs shot people during the anti-Chavez protests several years ago... saw it on video and even mentioned it here... so this is a real possibility. Keep an open mind. Don't jump to conclusions, there is too much hidden information.

Good points, although mostly wasted cause folk seem to be so damned conditioned that they accept the words of known liars, who have been caught out repeatedly lying about almost every damn thing, as if they were gospel from on-high simply because of how they are packaged.

THAT reflex is something which'll fade in 2-3 generations thanks in part to some of the work we've been doing, but the death of skepticism is a critical favor in public approval for such idiocy.

Believe me though, I feel ya - that whole Libya mess no one wanted to listen to me about, and look at it now...

Sig, I agree; we stick our noses in so quickly sometimes and the result is so bad...Iraq is "so much better" since we invaded...right! If anyone pays attention to news from there, it's pretty bad, and the infrastructure is WORSE than it was under Saddam. Libya isn't faring too well, tho' in that case, I think time will tell, 'cuz any kind of internal overthrow has to go through a lot to get anything like "stable" again.

I don't know who to "support" in Syria, but I wish someone could stop it. The fact that Assad won't let any outside news people in is rally all I need to know to believe he's the worst, but yes, I know about the fears of those who support him, and they are probably well founded.

One can never know, and America is so given to making up their minds and rushing in, usually only making things worse, that I'm suspect of anything we get involved in.

Oonj: You get the prize for the first giggle of the day. Good one.

Dunno if they've taken responsibility for the blasts or if they're using them as an excuse, but
Quote:

Intense fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces erupted Monday in the Damascus neighborhood of al-Mazzeh, the site of embassies, security buildings and the homes of some members of the president's inner circle, opposition activists said.

At least 18 members of the security forces were injured, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The clashes were the fiercest so far in the Syrian capital, and the closest to its security centers since the start of the Syrian uprising last year, the group said.

A spokesman for the Free Syrian Army confirmed the rebels' involvement in the clashes. The Syrian government has not released an official statement.

The fighting in Damascus came as rebels made apparent gains against President Bashar al-Assad's forces elsewhere in the country.

Free Syrian Army fighters destroyed "the Division of the Countryside," a government ministry, in the eastern area of Deir Ezzor, according to the Local Coordination Committees of Syria (LCC), an opposition activist network. The rebels battled government forces who subjected them to "intense shelling," the group said.

CNN cannot independently confirm reports of casualties or attacks in Syria because the government has severely restricted the access of international journalists.

Over the weekend, bombs killed more than two dozen people in Damascus and Aleppo.

The government and opposition activists traded accusations over the attacks.

SANA said 27 people were killed when two "booby-trapped" cars exploded in Damascus on Saturday, and 140 people were wounded. On Monday, "the martyrs of the two terrorist blasts" in Damascus were buried, SANA reported.

A law enforcement member and a woman were killed in the Aleppo blast on Sunday, SANA said. An "armed terrorist group detonated a booby-trapped car while the authorities were dragging it out of a residential area," the report said.

A Syrian rebel leader over the weekend rejected the governments' claims.

"This is the regime's game. This is how they play their dirty tricks. They carry out these types of explosions from time to time to get more international support and compassion," Capt. Ammar al-Wawi of the rebel Free Syrian Army said Sunday. "They are desperately trying to prove to the world that they are fighting against armed gangs, but the reality is they are the ones who are doing all the killings." http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/19/world/meast/syria-unrest/index.html?hpt=
