Byte,

"But actually I think you just want to teach her how to fight, not put her in any situation like what you HAD to fight against when you were a kid. Which is a big difference."

That is correct.

No worries, I got it. Appreciated.

Hi Signe, I don't know why anyone cares whether your daughter watches Hanna with you guys, its none of their business and its just a movie.

Yes, I know, that was unbelievably snarky.

But WULF, honey-child... what are you going to do on day she comes home crying because nobody will play with her, or no boy has asked her to the prom? IF she starts out with your chip on her shoulder, that is almost a given.

Want to teach her something of value? Teach her to be an EMT.

I was the worst most vicious chip on the shoulder bitch on the planet when I was in school, and I got asked to the prom. I really don't think it's going to be an issue.

EMT is not a bad idea though. EMT + Martial Arts = behold amazing

And then you have the case of Anthony here, who routinely returns respect for disrespect and gets nothing but more disrespect for his trouble. So, this rule to live by, "You GIVE respect, you GET respect" is at least intellectually dishonest. It basically means, "I will respect you if I damn well feel like it and, really, I probably won't."

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Sorry, HKC, I worded that response poorly if you took that from it. I don't start with disrespect as the default. I tend to open with respect for others upon meeting them - basic respect, civility. They can LOSE that respect, or they can GAIN MORE, depending on their words and deeds, the more I get to know them. And about the highest level of respect I can give someone is to say to them, "I want YOU on my bank-robbing team!" Not everyone makes the cut; in fact, very few do. The bank-robbing team is a thought exercise: You're going into a tense situation, life or death, do or die. Who do you want with you? Which five or six people are the most indispensable in your life for such situations? Who will have your back, be loyal and fearless, stay cool under pressure, and never ever betray you, no matter what hell may come? Who can you rely on to be there if you need them, to be there if they say they're going to be there? Those people are your true friends, and the ones who deserve your very highest levels of respect.

Hello,

I have a similar criteria for friendship. If I tell you that you are my friend, it's because I think I can count on you when everything goes to heck in a handbasket. I often feel that if you have more friends than you can count on your fingers and toes, you're either very wealthy in love or too indiscriminate.

Sometimes I think of someone as a friend even with very limited information to go on. You never know for sure if your estimation of someone is completely accurate until something bad happens and you need help.

At the moment, there are two people on this forum whom I've never met that I feel I could call tomorrow and say, "Hey, I'm in town, I'm penniless, and I need somewhere to stay. Can you take me in for a few days?" And I think they'd say yes.

These people could expect the same from me. Though at least one of them would probably be surprised to hear I hold them in such esteem.

Hello,

It's possible to find love in the most surprising places. Even in a Wulf thread. It means a lot.

But then, in his own way, I suppose Wulf started this thread with love. So I shouldn't be surprised to find it at the end, even if the middle went astray.

"I'm Spartacus!" I think it might be more like only 2 people wouldn't put you up - you're a diamond geezer. I wouldn't argue with you if I didn't think so!

In terms of friendship and who qualifies - I told myself that in RWED I wouldn't look for friends or try to be too friendly (or too dickish), because that would lead to favoritism and to me the Ideal RWED was as a place for ideas and debate without the prejudice of friendship (or what someone looks like or having any real life consequences for having unpopular ideas). It supposed to be about ideas only, at least that's it's appeal to me. Sometimes unintended things happen along the way though.

We should make that it's own thread!
Cause I'd be much amused to engage in that particular thought exercise - not metaphorically, but who here would want who on a crew to rob a bank and why ?
That'd be hi-larious.

We've never met, but I would make five. Definitely.

And I can prove it would be true, for me, because I even FLEW to England to bring Jo (who I'd only met on line) and her dog home from England to live with us when she was in that position (BEFORE I knew my feelings about her, mind you). AND Choey (who I'd known for nearly a decade only on line) is living with us right now and has for over four years, from the time I paid for her to fly herself and her dog here from Back East when she was in pretty much the position you described. She is still not in a position to support herself, and I don't care if she stays with us for the rest of her life. Her dog drives both Jim and I crazy, but he feels the same about her.

So not only can I say with proof that the same would be true for you, but that it's BEEN TRUE for two people and would be true for numerous more, several of them on this forum.

You have many friends here, I believe, who would do the same.

This thread has taken a weird turn, but ok.

My home is open. We will give you "aid and succor". Even help you find a job. Cus, you know, we don't believe in people living on others forever.

Done it before, will do it again.

But here, you earn your keep. And you will get back up on your feet. No time for freeloaders.

So, come by our little cave. Stay a while. If you've got legs to stand on, more the welcome. Don't? We will help you find them.

I have a tendency to assume that if someone is nice to me and I like hanging around them that they are my friend. This doesn't always prove true unfortunately, but its the attitude I go into things with, if they actively irritate me, purposefully or not, then I don't think of them as a friend, but if they're nice, we have things in common and I don't mind their presence they're put on the friend list quickly. Of course its harder to get on the good friend list, we have to spend a lot of time, in some fashion, together and like doing so.

I made my subject line what it is now because I've realized that not everyone assumes comradery, and people will understand me better if they know that's how I think, otherwise I might confuse them.

Bank robbing: That would make a rockin' thread.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.
