"Reading Wulf's various "remarks" (I use the term loosely), I was hit with the perfect description of what he does: He PONTIFICATES! Never thought of it before, recognized the condescension and apparent belief that he is "teaching" us...or somesuch...but that word hit me as I was reading, and it is the most apropos description, surprised it didn't occur to me before. Of course, he pontificates IGNORANTLY, but that's kind of beside the point. " -Niki

Sho nuff Niki.

Lost cause, some here. But for the rest. WAKE UP.

Hmmm.
Thoughts strung together.
But, still light as a feather.

Movie hero's are zeros.
No such soul really made.

Rage masquerades
behind macho parades.

Needs to be right.
Needs the cape, needs the fight.

To be accepted as wise
is what is sought as a prize.

When self is what desires the proof.

What's funny is that Wulfie thought that was a compliment.

Wish, yer cute today; keep it up, I'm enjoying it!

I'm not about to click on Wulf's links; I'm guessing they'll be more of his usual fantasies. At least he posts links now, not the actual videos. That's nice.

From what you wrote, I'm assuming they're about heroes or something so yes, he apparently does not have a grasp of what "pontificate" means. Here, I'll help out:

The original meaning had to do with the curch, and bishops, etc. as in the duties of a Pontiff. But the common usage has become
Quote:

to speak in a pompous or dogmatic manner: Did he pontificate about the responsibilities of a good citizen?
or
Quote:

to speak or write and give your opinion about something as if you knew everything about it and as if only your opinion was correct
Boy, was I right; those fit you to a "T"!

Synonyms include dogmatize, evangelize, get on a soapbox, give sermon, harangue, lecture, minister, moralize, preach, which again are pretty apt definitions of what you do.

"Pompous" also came to mind, but I think pontificate fits much better.

Tho', looking that up, it's pretty close, too:
Quote:

1. Affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important: "a pompous ass".
Quote:

Characterized by excessive self-esteem or exaggerated dignity; pretentious
Yeah, that's pretty close too, but pontificate still hits it on the nail.

There. Now you know what pontificate means, and sad to say, it's NOT a compliment.

Or Wulf could just look at your smug, self-satified little screed above for a living example of "Pontificate".

I worry about Wulf, I really do. Whenever he wants to make a point about reality, he posts links to science fiction and action movies. Movies. Movies??? I think his grasp on reality is light. I know he thinks he's warning us about some armageddon ... I can't tell if he thinks it's going to be blacks taking over the country or the gummint becoming a fascist state. Heck, maybe even he doesn't know for sure. But it's like he goes into some man-cave, uses these movies to flagellate himself into a froth, and comes out spewing. I find it disturbing that he's married and about to become a father, and the closer to the election we get the more and more pointed (so to speak) his rhetoric will become, since Obama represents everything Wulf fears.

Son, the United States has ALREADY been taken over. You're not telling me anything new. But it's not going to be solved with a gun. You have a vote, and so do most people. Use it wisely and convince us to do the same. (HINT: You might want to stop posting links to fictional characters, as they are not very convincing.)

What Wulf does is certainly annoying, but I don't think 'pontificates' quite describes it. Niki even less so.

It's not personal. It's just war.

And, I was going to say... if you don't want to abide by the results of a democratic vote and you and your small band of merrie men (if any) try to "liberate" the rest of the country at the point of a gun, then you really do belong in jail. Because THAT kind of "freedom" is just fascism spelled differently.

So you consider Niki's coments to be pontification?

Guess we agree on that.

So you DO consider Niki's quotes of pontificating liberal bloggers to be pontification then. We agree again.

Why don't you like poor Niki?

I think you're projecting again. I like Niki just fine. I'm merely pointing out that if she is pontificating, then so indeed are you, in your own smug and self-satisfied way.

As always, you show your hypocrisy, holding others to a standard of behavior you'd never hold yourself to.

At least now we know why you call yourself conservative. Hypocrisy IS one of your key family values, is it not?

I don't think Wulf pontificates. He's just not able to string that many words together in sentences that make sense.

I see into the future, where words will be replaced by youtube links. I do not wish to live there.

I ain't gonna deny coming across as pompous and dogmatic on the occasion myself, especially not when my ex compared me rather unfavorably to Elrond in the council scene from LoTR.
"Oh my gawd, he sounds like YOU!"

Anyways, it's a verb, which is an action, to DO, yes ?
Therefore people DO it, neh ?
See Also: Deny, Denial.

Funnier than hell. In a way, neither of you got it: Did you not read (and here's where only you got it wrong, Mike; the quotes were from on-line dictionaries...if you were referring to that post) "to speak or write and give your opinion about something as if you knew everything about it and as if only your opinion was correct"? My post specifically was a snark--if you don't know the difference between a snark and pontificating, Geezer, you need to check your dictionary. Your post, on the other hand, was an obvious snark; not enough words for "pontificating".

Now, as to me pontificating, I may forget sometimes, but I usually make a serious effort to say "in my opinion", IMHO, I believe, the way I see it, etc., etc., to indicate that it is MY opinion, not necessarily the final word. What WULF does, on the other hand, is this:
Quote:

"Why is it then Wulf? Do you know something we don't?"

Yes.

Lots actually.

But no more hints. Sorry, but you gotta start doing your own research, your own thinking, now.

Papa Wulf is done trying to guide you.

Sure that will be a relief to some..

Until.

Do you get how that fits "to speak or write and give your opinion about something as if you knew everything about it and as if only your opinion was correct"? That post is a perfect example of what Wulf does more often than not...writes as if he knows everything and only his opinion is correct. The synonyms fit him perfectly; if you don't recognize that he lectures, moralizes and preaches, you've not been paying attention.

As I wrote, "pompous" fits him pretty well, according to the on-line dictionary: "Affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important", but given he goes on and on with his "pronouncements", pontificating does the job for me.

There's a vast difference between the two. My post was certainly smug--self-satisfied I'd argue about--but it was intentionally so, as it was a SNARK at Wulf's lack of understanding of the term pontificate.

Frem, in my opinion you're never "pompous", far from it. But yes, "dogmatic" certainly fits ;o) And don't you DARE knock Elrond; Hugo Weaving is my idol. What he did in "V for Vendetta" was downright magnificent, in my opinion, and his Agent Smith in the Matrix was wonderful. Three incredibly different characters, and he pulled each one off flawlessly. ;o)

Here's a smug statement for you, but not one saying that I know it all: As I've said before, I adore language, especially English and French, and am pretty well versed in both--English far more, as my love for it caused me to learn a lot about it; my French has faded exceedingly from lack of use over the years, but I think I could still carry on somewhat of a conversation, if it was a slow one. What French I have left helped us a lot in our visits to Switzerland. But words, words are my joy, part of why I post so long; so yes, it's an area I get a kick out of.
