North Korea has acknowledged a multi-stage rocket it launched early Friday failed to reach orbit.

An announcer on North Korean television - interrupting programming four hours after the launch, which was not broadcast - says the Kwangmyongsong-3 earth observation satellite did not succeed in reaching orbit and scientific experts are investigating the cause of the failure.

Officials in Seoul, Tokyo and Washington say North Korea's rocket indeed blasted off from the launch pad but failed to get very far.

U.S. military officials called it a Taepo Dong-2 missile. They say it was tracked by satellite on a southern trajectory where the first stage fell into the Yellow Sea. The North American Aerospace Defense Command says the other two stages failed to continue in flight and never posed a threat. ortly-After-Launch-147283565.html

Doesn't that make three failed tries? Does this mean they can't build a decent rocket...like maybe their threats to launch one are just sabre rattling to worry us? And isn't three strikes "you're out"?

The amusing thing is that this goes a ways toward telling all those countries they sell rocket parts to that maybe they should find another buyer...

Okay, conspiracy theorists...did it really fail, or did we shoot it down?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I don't think it means much. Even advanced western powers have a rocket go awry from time to time. We had our fair share in the space race.

To be honest, I don't consider the country to be very much of a threat with or without fizzling rockets.

But yeah, I might shop around if I wanted rocket components for my own program. It's not good advertising.

Angry North Korea threatens retaliation, nuclear test expected =>

A bristling North Korea on Wednesday said it was ready to retaliate in
the face of international condemnation over its failed rocket launch,
increasing the likelihood the hermit state will push ahead with a third
nuclear test.

The North also ditched an agreement to allow back inspectors from the
International Atomic Energy Agency. That followed a U.S. decision, in
response to the rocket launch it says was a disguised long-range missile
test, to break off a deal earlier this year to provide the impoverished
state with food aid.

Pyongyang called the U.S. move a hostile act and said it was no longer
bound by its February 29 agreement with Washington, dashing any hopes
that new leader Kim Jong-un would soften a foreign policy that has for
years been based on the threat of an atomic arsenal to leverage conces-
sions out of regional powers.

Oonjerah interprets: NK is mad ... at IAEA for one. So US renegs on food
deal. Which makes NK even madder.
Their rocket failed. Not our fault. NK reaction seems strange. This means
I dunno what's going on with them. Is it a tantrum?

PYONGYANG, North Korea — North Korea is armed with “powerful modern weapons”
capable of defeating the United States, a top military chief in Pyongyang said
Wednesday amid increased speculation abroad about the nation’s missile arsenal
and nuclear ambitions.

Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho emphasized the importance of strengthening the military
to defend North Korea against threats it sees from the United States and South
Korea. He called his nation a nuclear and military power and praised new leader
Kim Jong Un, believed to be in his late 20s, as a “military strategist” who has been
giving the army guidance for years.

“The Korean People’s Army is armed with powerful modern weapons ... that can
defeat the (U.S.) imperialists at a single blow,” he told party and military officials,
using familiar descriptions of the country’s rivals.

The meeting, attended by Kim Jong Un, was held to mark the 80th anniversary of
the army’s founding.

(AP) – North Korea's military warned Monday of imminent "special actions" that
would reduce South Korea's conservative government to ashes within minutes,
sharply escalating the rhetoric against its southern rival.

The threat from the North's military leadership comes amid concerns that North
Korea may be plotting another provocation in the wake of an unsuccessful
rocket launch condemned by the U.N. Security Council as a violation of a ban
against missile activity.

Is it a tantrum? Sure it is, as history has shown. It's also sabre rattling, which they've also indulged in throughout their history. It's amusing, tho'.
