10 Dead, 41 Hurt in Violent Chicago Weekend

One man was shot in the head and another in the back Monday night, the latest incidents in a violent holiday weekend in Chicago.
Police said a group was standing in the 1700 block of East 68th Street around 10 p.m. in the city's South Shore neighborhood when someone fired shots. One man was shot in the head and died, and another was struck in the back and transported to a local hospital.
In total, 10 people died over the weekend and 41 were hurt in shootings since Friday night across Chicago.
On Tuesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy outlined new strategies to reduce crime.
“Reducing gang-related violence is key to driving down overall crime in Chicago,” Emanuel said

I could as easily title the thread "The fruits of private gun ownership" and be as accurate as your title, since one has about as much to do with the actual news story as the other.

Oh, wait - my title is MORE accurate, because guns were actually involved in most of these killings, it looks like.

'Course, Chicago is also cited as one of the birthplaces of the whole "tea party" movement, so I could title the thread "The fruits of the tea party" as well...

Careful, you'll screw yourself into the ground w/ all that spin.

Democrat dominated Chicago, home of Barack Hussein Obama, and all that community organizing, along w/ his former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel now as mayor.

Chicago Crime: Shootings Slightly Up, Murders Way Up. What Gives?

Between 2000 and 2007, Newark saw a near-doubling in the number of murders, going against well-known national trends. But it didn't see a comparable increase in the number of shootings

But then again, so were members of the community - unless those guns jumped up and shot folks all by themselves.

So who has the power to decide to shoot or not - the guns, or the people?

The people with guns, of course. Were they community organizers? Or does that whole concept of personal responsibility get tossed out the window when one is trying to blame community organizing for the actions of people with guns?

They were the fruits of being community organized. As the title states.

But before a gun can do anything, it's the people who must be responsible.

Glad you see the error of your ways, and now are no longer blaming the guns ( it's just an object, it doesn't mean what you think ) for the actions of the individuals.

Glad you see the error of your ways, too - it's not the community being organized that caused this. As you said, it was the individuals themselves. Community organizers are even less responsible for this than mere objects like guns, and thanks for making my point for me yet again.

I guess that militia leader in Arizona was a community organizer, too. Right?

And the former editor of Guns & Ammo who used both guns and ammo to kill his friend? Was he a community organizer as well?

In RappyWorld™, community organizers are 100% responsible for the actions of every person in the community, but racist tea-baggers are NOT representative of their group - with them, it's just those few million bad apples spoiling it for the other eleven people in the group, to paraphrase Dennis Miller.

If you have a candidate who touts his credentials as a community organizer in Chicago, you'd expect one result of his organizing might be less violence in the community.

Or are you saying that community organization has no effect at all on changing folk's view of what their personal responsibility towards others in the community (like whether to shoot them or not) is?

This is a crazy argument Kwick....

I've owned a compact .45 Colt for nearly 5 years. I've only held it after checking 8 times that it wasn't loaded.

As long as I've owned it, I finally admitted to my yonger bro all of this and he said "Good!".

He has fired many firearms and knows how to clean them and disarm them since he served a full Army term.

When he comes over this week, we're going to build my new garden, and then he's going to spend some time having me clean my gun and learn the parts and not be afraid of it anymore.

He's got some LARGE guns that could do more damage, but he LOVE's my compact Colt .45 that I've never fired and he's pissed that I've never fired it.

It's about the size of his .22, but the bullets are about 50 cents each and even though the barrel of is .22 looks like it shoots bb gun bullets, mine looks like it shoots cannons off of an old pirate ship.

I'm going to learn, and I'm going to respect what I have.

In the mean time.... those 5 years while I've owned this firearm and never fired it once, there has probably been 200,000 illegal shots fired by 100,000 untrained and unlicensed people, and probably half of those were by people who Federally were outlawed from even posessing a firearm. Over several thousand deaths attributed to those shootings that were completely accidental and not involved in the dispute at all...

In the mean time, just like the furnace I fixed on my own when I was taught enough to fix it on my own instead of paying somebody else 300 bucks, I will be comfortable enough to consider this an extension of my own body.

Seriously Kwick... I know the idea of a "Gun Free" land is all "Chutes and Laddars" and "Candy Land".....

But in the end, when you outlaw guns, the only people who own guns are the Outlaws....

Whatever this means to you now, good or bad... pro or con... I'd just remind you that soon this may be an "international thing".... China knows full well about, and is probably partially in control of the mainstream aversion to weapons. Since they outman us 7-1, it would probably be a lot easier to storm us on our beaches when the "heartland" is completely unarmed because "they" told us so.

I hate guns man..... I wish I could tranq everyone like "Chuck".

I'm just grateful that my army-trained bro is going to finally teach me how to use my gun after all of these years.

I only wish that every dickhead with a gun or a cock thought that much before they used it.

We'd have hundreds less deaths and thousands less births monthly in that perfect world.

Jack, you (and many others) have completely missed the point of my post. I'm illustrating the absurdity of blaming crime on community organizing. It's even more absurd than blaming it on guns. Did the community organizers jump up and kill all these people? Geezer says if the guns didn't do that, I can't blame the guns. So did community organizers commit every one of these murders? If not, you can't link them.

You say if guns were all outlawed then there would still be murders and gun crimes. I say that whether you have community organizing or not, there will still be crime. You can only hope to LESSEN the number of murders and the like through community organization and awareness. The righties here like to point out any crime as a complete failure of progressive policies, so I take that approach and turn it around on them. They say guns don't kill people, so all I have to do to prove them completely wrong is show one single case where someone accidentally shot and killed someone, because the gun most certainly DID kill somebody in that case; they undoubtedly would not be dead if there had not been a gun present.

If you think I'm advocating doing away with all gun ownership, you clearly haven't been paying attention for all the years you've been here. I'm advocating education and organization. Gun clubs and militias are "community organizing", only right-wingers don't want to admit that. Our military is a brand of socialism - it takes from all of us and redistributes the wealth, both to soldiers and to the military-industrial complex via Pentagon contracts - but right-wingers don't want to admit that, either. Yes, your army-trained brother is a socialist. Please be sure to tell him "You're welcome" from me for all the food, housing, training, etc. that he got by sucking tax dollars out of my pocket.

My apologies Kwick...

I wasn't doing at all what you thought I was....

I'm all for a world where we could live together and truly defend ourselves.

After a few lessons from my military trained bro, I won't feel any less able to teach my neighbors about guns as I would home improvement, lawn care or how to fix a furnace without paying somebody 300 bucks or more to do it.

Forgive me for just assuming that you, personally, were towing the Democrat line on this issue in that all non-government citizens should be unarmed.

I'd forgive you if you assumed that I would support the death penalty or would fight for pro-life.

I'm not admitting at all that I agree with the Left on either of those issues, but I do have my own Human stance for each of them.

If you really believe what you say about gun ownership here, you'd be lucky to be my neighbor if we became friends. Friends, especially in bad times are good. I don't imagine unless a miracle happens that many of us are in for the 80's or 90's or even the 2000's down the road....

The Mayan BS it just that..... Bullshit....

2012 isn't the end of the world....

It very may well be the end of "something" though....

It's good to have friends.....

Good luck Kwick...

If things ever get bad in the final year of the Mayan calendar, I wish you lived close to me. That's the only way we'd ever see eye to eye, and at that point, I think we'd do unmentionable things in the name of freedom together.
