You've probably heard about the "face-eating" thing in Florida. It's incomprehensible to me. The articles I've read say similar things happened with people who said they were on LSD, but the cops think it was mixed with something else, and one explanation was that they're amphetamines, stimulants similar to meth or ecstacy. I've never heard of "bath salts"...does anyone know what they actually ARE?

It continues to amaze me how people will put things like this in their bodies. We may have been druggies, but they never got this bad. Again it shows me how totally insane our species can SOMETIMES be!

No. It shows how insane individuals can sometimes be.

Basically, yes, they're amphetamines. Specifically they're like crystal meth (hence why they're marketed as bath salts to avoid discovery), but the chemical structure is slightly different.

Other hard drugs that cause violent, aggressive, or psychotic behaviour in individuals have been around before now. Crack comes to mind. Also mean drunks.

Sin taxes on alcohol drive up the cost of mild intoxicants, so some people seek out cheaper highs. Addiction follows for some and the cycle of tolerance builds up in their system, so they keep on seeking out bigger highs. Death is one of the predictable outcomes.

It should be pointed out that everything you just said can also be applied to alcohol, with or without the sin taxes affixed to it.

I bet meth can do that to some people. So many people take this stuff without any logical thought about the consequences, they think it will be fun to try once ...

I don't think alcohol makes people act like this. And the thing about alcohol is that it can be used responsably, a lot of these artificial drugs really can't be used responsably very well.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

There were some pretty horrific stories about PCP (Angel Dust) for a while there. And meth does some seriously fucked up stuff to a person.

My sister's old neighbor (who no longer lives there because he's in prison now) once called the cops to his house because "there's people trying to get in to steal my stash of crank." Only there weren't any people there. Well, not until the cops came, anyway, at which time he invited them in and explained that he had a couple pounds of meth stashed in the couch, and they needed to protect it and him from the guys outside (who still weren't there).

Believe it or not, the cops arrested him and got an easy conviction. Go figure...

The key to most things is moderation. From what I've seen, the thing about meth and coke that make them so bad is that the first thing they take away is your ability to reliably be moderate about how much you're doing.

Well, alcohol has a lot of the same issues - you can't be relied on to judge whether or not you've had "enough" or too much, it takes away your ability to make rational decisions, etc.

I've known people who felt like they just had to go out and get passing-out drunk every single night. We'd go out for beers, and after two or three, I'd be done. They couldn't comprehend that idea at all, the idea that someone could just get a little buzz and be fine with that, or have just a few and be done for the night. They didn't stop until one of three things happened: they ran out of money, the bars closed, or they lost consciousness.

These are not fun people to be around for very long. They can be entertaining for a bit, but after prolonged exposure, it just becomes tedious and worrying.

Moderation.

I, Mincingbeast, use and endorse drugs. Specifically, I enjoy and encourage 1) huffing gasoline 2) sniffing paint fumes 3) inhaling the scent of marking pens, and 4) smoking banana peels and nutmeg. Sometimes I choke myself just to enjoy the pleasant sensation of blood returning to my atrophied brain.

Bath salts sound hella very rad.

I am going to ingest a tremendous amount and post my reaction here. In the interest of science.

No, Riona, meth has never turned anyone into a zombie who does things such as the examples given. It's ugliness is completely different, and Mike's anecdote was a perfect example of it's potential effects. I've known people who did very similar things--paranoia is probably the biggest. PCP might come close, but we haven't had sories like this, several in a row in different places, with ANY drug previously that I'm aware of. Maybe it has something to do with the psychological stuff people are going through these days that turns them that way, but this shit makes headlines, and I've never seen healines like this before.

(Maybe the influence of movies and TV have finally caught up with the national consciousness?)

Whatever it is, this throwing intestines at police and eating people's faces is new to me, and tho' I know nothing of "bath salts", I've never heard of any drug having effects like those... Even acid, which had (at the time I was into drugs) the most pervasively psychosis-giving effects of any drug, didn't cause people to do things like this. One reason I refused to ever even try LSD was how many times I observed its results and how many people I sat with while they were having a bad trip.

As to "responsibly", that's up to individual definitions. "Moderation" is more like it for me. I used psylocybin, mescaline AND meth for quite some time, but I never went overboard or did them daily, and never had a problem. As well as living with a number of people who did the same. NO drug taking is "responsible", and over time I'd bet alcohol has done many times the damage to people and those around them than any other drug in the history of mankind, simply because so many people ingest it.

Meth could have become a serious problem for me because of it's (and coke's and crack's) highly-addictive qualities--luckily I had examples in front of me and the guy I took it to be with went away, so I stopped shooting it pretty quickly. That was pure luck, I never kid myself otherwise. But stuff like this? No comparison to the worst effects of meth. Or any other drug I've encountered.

As to Mincing, he's easy and wonderful. Just read virtually everything he writes as "satire" and you get it. Just look at him as showing up the absurdity of any subject we're discussing, and you'll enjoy his contributions! Nice one, Mincing, by the way--prize for first giggle of the day, unquestionably!

There are many articles now on the web about Bath Salts.

"Bath Salts" A Deadly New Drug With A Deceptively Innocent Name =>
http://www.forbes.com/sites/melaniehaiken/2012/06/04/bath-salts-a-dead
ly-new-drug-with-a-deceptively-innocent-name
/

And yes, unfortunately, there’s a new drug making its way into communities across
the country and it’s really, really scary. . . .

The FDA has banned the active ingredients in "Bath Salts" but drug designers keep
a step ahead. . . .

The symptoms of being dangerously high on bath salts include (but aren’t limited to):
•extreme paranoia
•elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and pulse
•extremely high body temperature
•sleep deprivation
•vivid hallucinations
•hostility or aggression
•strange eye movements
•extreme sweating
•panic attacks
•suicidal thoughts

================================

And YouTube has much to see about it too . . .

Nothing about those side effects are or have ever been the least bit appealing to me.

I guess I'm officially 'old' now, since I rarely even drink any more, as I don't care for how it makes me feel. But these trips, and the impact that stuff has on one's brain chemistry, as well as body temp, perspiration, motor reflexes....

where's THAT get fun ?

Oh, crap, Oonj, that's bad news. As many ways as we humans have found to fuck ourselves up, I hate to see yet another arrive on the scene, especially one which sounds so truly lethal...damn.

ETA (after reading the article): Dear gawd: "To understand what the drug does, think of “bath salts” as a cross between meth and acid." I can think of few more deadly combinations! It mentions MDPV, I know about that one (mostly from Law & Order episodes!) and I know mephedrone, but not the rest.
Quote:

But what’s scary about bath salts is how the drug seems to have appeared out of nowhere, and how fast it’s taking hold. In the past year, the number of calls to poison control centers about bath salts increased more than 20 times, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, from 304 reports in 2010 to 6,138 in 2011. According to the FDA, no reports of the drug surfaced until 2009, during which the FDA reported two cases. By the following year there were more than 300 cases, and by last year the number had tripled to over 900 cases.

That’s a tiny number, to be sure. But those most often using the drugs are teens, whose brains and central nervous systems are still developing. In fact, experts say the drugs are marketed directly to kids, with cartoon characters on the colorful packages.

So we have a drug that’s easily available, inexpensive, innocent sounding, and profoundly addictive. Doesn’t that sound to you like we’re going to have a serious new drug problem on our hands in a few years?

Gawd help us....
