While I FULLY appreciate how much Japan needs nuclear energy, this is nonetheless depressing:
Quote:

Japan must restart two nuclear reactors to protect the country's economy and livelihoods, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has said in a televised broadcast.

Measures to ensure the safety of two reactors at western Japan's Ohi nuclear plant have been undertaken, he said.

Since last year's Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan's 50 reactors have been shut down for routine maintenance.

The crisis fuelled immense public opposition to nuclear power, but Japan is facing a summer of power shortages.

Japan's last nuclear shut down for routine maintenance was in May. When the third reactor at the Tomari plant in Hokkaido prefecture was switched off, Japan was left without energy from atomic power for the first time in more than 40 years.

Public confidence in nuclear safety was shaken by the meltdowns at the Fukushima power plant, triggered by last year's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

"Cheap and stable electricity is vital. If all the reactors that previously provided 30% of Japan's electricity supply are halted, or kept idle, Japanese society cannot survive," Mr Noda said.

He added that some companies could possibly move production out of Japan, losing vital jobs as a result.

"It is my decision that Ohi reactors No 3 and No 4 should be restarted to protect the people's livelihoods," he said.

Mr Noda and members of his cabinet could make a formal decision by next week if the governor of Fukui prefecture, where the reactors are located, agrees.

But the move is extremely controversial, reports the BBC's Roland Buerk.

Earlier this week, a third of governing party members of parliament petitioned Mr Noda, urging him to exercise "greater caution" over the issue.

Protests met the prime minister's announcement in central Tokyo, with people waving placards stating, "We oppose restarts".

His statement was made only a few hours after the former president of the Fukushima plant operator testified before a high-profile investigative panel appointed by parliament.

Masataka Shimizu said that he did not consider a pullout of the plant's workers during the height of the crisis as had been alleged.

In April, the government set stricter safety guidelines for nuclear plants in a bid to win public confidence for restarts. These include the installation of filtered vents and a device to prevent hydrogen explosions.

Last month, the government asked businesses and households in parts of the country to cut electricity usage by up to 15% to avoid possible blackouts. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-18366398#

Something along the lines of an object lesson in putting all your eggs in one basket, perhaps? I sure don't look forward to them starting back up again...maybe Sig can tell us what the ensuing dangers might be...?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I can't help but feel there is some questionable information being presented here.

Quote:

It seems odd to think of 50 nuclear reactors all shut down for 'routine maintenance' at the same time. That doesn't sound particularly routine to me.

First time in 40 years? That doesn't sound particularly routine to me. Apparently this 'routine' hasn't been conducted in 40 years. I wonder what is routine about it.

Japan is the among the most driven and innovative countries in the entire world, and they think they can't figure out alternatives to nuclear power?

These are the same people who successfully industrial revolutionized themselves in the 19th century when the rest of Asia was far behind and who managed to rebuild their economy and industrial society and stabilized their government in less than a decade after a devastating loss in a world war.

They aren't even trying this time. Pretty lame excuses.

Perspective? Maybe it's a Generational thing.

STUNNING SENIOR MOMENT:

A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game,
took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why
it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.

"You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one," the
student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. "The young
people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking
on the moon, our spaceships have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy,
electric and hydrogen cars, computers with DSL, BPS, light-speed processing
... and," he paused to take another drink of beer ...

The Old Fart took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said,
"You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young, so we
invented them.
"Now, you arrogant little shit, what are you doing for the next generation?"

The applause was resounding.

The guys who invented those things were aware of some of the limitations & dangers.
Perhaps arrogant little shits are not aware and take it all for granted.

I'm getting awfully sick of you telling me I'm too young to have wisdom or perspective, Oonj.

Why don't you tell me how you really feel? Because apparently, unlike you, I'm polite enough to not insult you through homilies.

They ARE making excuses. Look at this.

That doesn't exactly say they don't have other options except for nuclear. So basically it's a bunch of bullshit from pro-nuclear advocates in the Japanese government. Colour me unsurprised!

I can find a bunch of charts showing that nuclear energy in japan is exceeded by other energy sources. Here's another.

So, how's my WISDOM AND PERSPECTIVE now?

Or how about another one: you and I will never get along, and we'll never learn anything from each other, if you show me no goddamn respect, because I'm going to send that RIGHT BACK AT YOU.

Byte,

It wasn't directed at you. You are not the center of my universe.

It is directed at 2 or more generations of managers who have a tiger by the tail
and are too damn scared or irresponsible to get the tiger back in its cage.

But if you still wanna be this paranoid, identifying as an arrogant little shit,
that's your right.

If I have to react to others all the time, then they own my mind more than I do.
If I let others tell me how to feel, I lose my ability to choose happiness.
If I let others tell me who I am, I've vacated self-definition.
Finally, I realized how foolish I was to give others such power over me.

Think I will be paranoid, it's served me well so far. In the past you've insulted me a number of times, not without precedence to think there's more insults. Last post has yet more. Always insulting.

Byte,
. . .
This thread is about nuclear power in Japan, their current power crisis, etc.
The topic is relevant worldwide, maybe moreso in countries with nuclear power.

. . . Thread jack = Bad.
If you want to talk honestly about what you think I've said to you, I suggest we
adjourn to a more private thread. If not, stick with what you imagine.

Plenty of other threads get personal. If someone wants to come in and return it to the original topic, I'll discuss it. But right now, I'm talking to you.

Your story about a youngster going off about the primitive technology of the old-timers doesn't seem to relate to the tradition bound nuclear experts insisting they should keep using and relying on existing technology. To me, it sounded a lot more like you were scolding me for suggesting that the Japanese should pursue other alternative technology.

An explanation would go a long way to clearing the air. You don't have to give it, but in that case I must continue to interpret what you meant as an insult towards me.

Actually, Byte, I think she was kind of AGREEING with you that it's pretty lame:
Quote:

Perhaps arrogant little shits are not aware and take it all for granted.

In other words, the older generations WERE AWARE of limitations and dangers; maybe it's the younger generations who have taken living with nuclear energy so much for granted that they either think it's safe or aren't paying attention.

I didn't see it as aimed at you, and I know you're kind of hyper-sensitive to those of us with whom you've had disagreements in the past, to the point where you might just possibly be interpreting things we say in the present as something they're not. JMHO

DREAMTROVE

It seems the anti-nuclear case, which appears weak to me, only serves to get japan off of nuclear power, of which the danger seems nominal, and onto some more common fuel like oil, over which I think we recently saw about 2.4 million deaths in our related conflicts. I'm highly skeptical. If I were prime minister of japan, I'd probably make the same call. My main concern would be energy independence for japan.

Niki's interpretation is correct.

PM me if you wanna talk straight.

Niki, I'm not sure about this interpretation, but I'm talking to Oonj in PMs, so, I guess we'll see if this can be resolved.

DT: You're probably right, but on the other hand, I don't like nuclear power because of what I've had to put up with and it boggles the mind that Japan, who has had it even WORSE, is so cavalier about it.
