Well, I seriously got it in my inbox. During the 2008 campaign I registered with both Democratic and Republican newsletters so that I could see what the political parties were saying to their own base about the opposition. This has somehow resulted on me getting into some bizarre propaganda distribution lists.

This is being circulated, and you may be certain that people are meant to believe it.

(Reuters) - The United States reversed policy on Wednesday and said it would back launching talks on a treaty to regulate arms sales as long as the talks operated by consensus, a stance critics said gave every nation a veto.

The decision, announced in a statement released by the U.S. State Department, overturns the position of former President George W. Bush's administration, which had opposed such a treaty on the grounds that national controls were better.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States would support the talks as long as the negotiating forum, the so-called Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, "operates under the rules of consensus decision-making."

"Consensus is needed to ensure the widest possible support for the Treaty and to avoid loopholes in the Treaty that can be exploited by those wishing to export arms irresponsibly," Clinton said in a written statement.

While praising the Obama administration's decision to overturn the Bush-era policy and to proceed with negotiations to regulate conventional arms sales, some groups criticized the U.S. insistence that decisions on the treaty be unanimous.

"The shift in position by the world's biggest arms exporter is a major breakthrough in launching formal negotiations at the United Nations in order to prevent irresponsible arms transfers," Amnesty International and Oxfam International said in a joint statement.

However, they said insisting that decisions on the treaty be made by consensus "could fatally weaken a final deal."

"Governments must resist US demands to give any single state the power to veto the treaty as this could hold the process hostage during the course of negotiations. We call on all governments to reject such a veto clause," said Oxfam International's policy adviser Debbie Hillier.

The proposed legally binding treaty would tighten regulation of, and set international standards for, the import, export and transfer of conventional weapons.

Supporters say it would give worldwide coverage to close gaps in existing regional and national arms export control systems that allow weapons to pass onto the illicit market.

Nations would remain in charge of their arms export control arrangements but would be legally obliged to assess each export against criteria agreed under the treaty. Governments would have to authorize transfers in writing and in advance.

The main opponent of the treaty in the past was the U.S. Bush administration, which said national controls were better. Last year, the United States accounted for more than two-thirds of some $55.2 billion in global arms transfer deals.

Arms exporters China, Russia and Israel abstained last year in a U.N. vote on the issue.

The proposed treaty is opposed by conservative U.S. think tanks like the Heritage Foundation, which said last month that it would not restrict the access of "dictators and terrorists" to arms but would be used to reduce the ability of democracies such as Israel to defend their people.

The U.S. lobbying group the National Rifle Association has also opposed the treaty.

A resolution before the U.N. General Assembly is sponsored by seven nations including major arms exporter Britain. It calls for preparatory meetings in 2010 and 2011 for a conference to negotiate a treaty in 2012.

In other words, it has nothing to do with Americans and their guns, it has to do with EXPORTING weapons only meant to kill to other countries. Got it.

Gee, I can't imagine why the NRA opposes it...

ETA: I'll pass on that ever-so-tempting opportunity if you don't mind, Anthony. I get enough spam as it is, and every time some group gets ahold of my e-mail, the first time they e-mail me I either unsubscribe or add them to the spam folder,or both. I don't need to encourage MORE of them, especially from EITHER political party!! (And yes, I unsubscribed/spammed the Democratic party the first time THEY hit me, too.)

Here is another more remarkable email. I got this one at the end of last year, and kept it because it was so remarkably vile. You can see in the opening lines why I found it despicable.

The following is a narrative taken from a 2008 Sunday morning televised "Meet The Press."

It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of waring people, conduct ourselves like the nations of Islam, where peace prevails - - - perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our governments ....."

It's a version of satire made up by John Semmens, which either whoever sent that e-mail actually managed to BELIEVE (shocking as that concept is, and much as it shows the ignorance and blind partisanship of some), or was utilizing to "stir up the base", some of whom actually might ALSO believe it. It first showed up in 2008; apparently it's being resurected. Gawd some in my species make me sick to my stomach!

There are a couple of other fun fabricated statements Obama supposedly made at that site, you might get a giggle; some are pretty far out.

Amusingly, I've always hated the national anthem. Not only is it damned hard to remember and difficult for any normal person to sing on key, it IS way too warlike for my taste. I wish they'd change it to something like "America the Beautiful" or the other one...got "my country t'is of thee" in it. But one of those is the British "god save the queen" so I guess that wouldn't really do, would it? But me, I DESPISE our national anthem and refuse to ever sing it. It's one of the worst outward symbols of our "empire" there is.

Yaysoos Kristos, Six, could you POSSIBLY stop regaling us with your credit score and how you own your house? I thought maybe telling you that we own ours outright too might make some impact (and I don't give diddly squat what our credit score is), but you keep repeating those two things as if they are the full measure of a person and we should somehow be awed by them or...something. Hello,

After receiving enough of these propaganda emails, I've become convinced that Pirate doesn't originate most of his own material. He is a repeating station, possibly adding a seasoning of 'Nazi Jew' from time to time.

Can you imagine what it's like to be a normal person of average intelligence who gets these emails day in and day out, year after year? How long before you start to believe the bleating of the sheep, and swallow the message hook, line, and sinker?

I imagine many people, for instance, are happy to accept this statement:
