If could show you the hundred or so pictures in my head that are soooo bad that they completely drown out the twenty you posted... I used to believe in the .oo1 percent. Supposedly that is why matter exists, because it is .oo1 percent stronger than "anti-matter" forces... I'm pretty sure evil's got the upper hand these days. We're going to have to find a better way to curb baser instincts somehow if we're gonna get our humanity back. I guess I stand with the grumpy guy on this one.......I been stabbed in the back one too many damn times I guess.

Quote:Originally posted by 1kiki: "Why do you automatically assume all those things for the little girl ?" What I see is that her skin is brown, her features are Indian and her clothes are Indian. She appears to be rural Indian, who for the most part are illiterate, impoverished, and short-lived. And he looks Anglo, wealthy and not in the US. And that is what we're supposed to see. But we know nothing about her, or him. They're mere stand-ins to illustrate those vague notions. I'm responding to those notions we're supposed to see. Tho for all we know she's a virgin being sold to a pedophile. BTW: poverty in rural traditional cultures doesn’t look the same as poverty in westernized cities. Children in Chiapas ] Hey 1kiki, I see the pictures and the follow up to them about why a girl who is wearing a bright and vibrantly colored dress could still be considered poor and illeterate, and for argument's sake, let's just say I'll take your word on it that this is the case in an overwhelming majority of cases in India so we can make that half of the picture a reasonable assumption. What I didn't see was an explanation of why the white guy in the picture looks wealthy? I've never been wealthy, and I've been known to wear a clean white Tshirt and black shorts with a nice haircut in my youth. Hell... I even wore some ridiculous bling along with it (silver, cause I couldn't afford the gold stuff like my friends). I even had a great smile back then too, and I probably hadn't even seen a dentist for five years before reaching his age (big secret, I brushed at least twice a day... and I didn't pick up smoking and drinking coffee until around that age). For all we know, this kid was on a mission or some peace corp deal. To assume any form of wealth, in my mind, based solely off of the picture without any other context is a form of racism. I'm not lambasting you for this. I'm just pointing your post out to educate. I feel that way a lot these days, especially in my world which becomes more and more racially integrated everyday. I feel that just because I'm not wearing stubble all over my face, I don't have tattoos all over, and I don't live in a trailer park, I'm getting profiled everyday by minorities as being some lucky white guy who had a great upbringing that I didn't deserve. I work 24 hours a week now overnight stocking shelves and bailing cardboard boxes. It shouldn't bother me, but it does because I do care about what people think about me. Just like an asian guy with a 7" package hates knowing that everyone assumes he has only a 3" package, I hate people thinking that I'm in some sort of exclusive money club because I'm white and I don't go out of the house looking like shit. Every race has bad stereotypes, but how come black guys are the only ones that have any good ones. They're all massive under the belt and they can all dance, right?

Quote:Originally posted by 1kiki: "in India" ... mmm ... not India. Indians generally from Mexico, or Central or S America. The children's pictures were from Chiapas, the the most southern state in Mexico. Regarding lifespan in Chiapas, "But disparities persist; life expectancy is lower by 10 to 15 years and infant mortality can be twice as high in the poorer southern states like Chiapas." Regarding its poverty and education, "According to the United Nations Development Program, which tracks life expectancy, literacy, and standard of living, Chiapas ranks lower on the Human Development Index than any other Mexican state. To put that in context, the capital, Mexico City, scores about as well as the Czech Republic; Chiapas ranks with Syria." Anyway, that was just for information. "For all we know, this kid was on a mission or some peace corp deal. To assume any form of wealth, in my mind, based solely off of the picture without any other context is a form of racism." I take your point. The fresh haircut, good quality and clean if casual clothes, might be due to a higher-spending if poorer lifestyle. The fact that he's so far from home at such a young age might not be a result of tourism and discretionary spending, but some other reason. And he might not even be American. But what he looks to be is definitely a first-world inhabitant. So my point is that I prickle at the idea that a (relatively) wealthy person can make poverty all better through a meaningless gesture. "I'm getting profiled everyday by minorities as being some lucky white guy who had a great upbringing that I didn't deserve." I know the feeling. I've had blacks openly resent me b/c they THINK I started out with everything. I DO recognize tho that I had some advantages - I went to a suburban high school, my parents REALLY valued education and pushed me to get good grades and go to college, and I didn't start out behnd others b/c of my color (though my sex definitely set me back many times). "I work 24 hours a week now overnight stocking shelves and bailing cardboard boxes." I'm SUPER pleased for you!
