America is "turning into Tsarist Russia," Joss Whedon said today during a Comic-Con panel when asked about the anti-corporate theme in much of his work. "We are watching capitalism destroy itself right now, [and] we're creating a country of serfs."

"We have people trying to create structures and preserve the structures that will help the middle and working class, and people [are] calling them socialists," Whedon went on. "It's not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal...it's some people with some sense of dignity and people who have gone off the reservation."

Once again, Joss shows us he's one of the good guys.

I see what he's saying, but at the same time, there's nothing wrong with Capitalism if it's actually Capitalism.

That's the problem with paper money.....

Capitalism isn't possible with paper money.

It's ONLY possible when goods of REAL VALUE are being traded for services.....

Otherwise... well... it's not Capitalism. It's pseudo-Capitalism with all of the lawyermaking and bureaucracy going on behind closed "paper" doors.....

I was born into a system that wasn't Capitalistic. I'd be willing to bet that a vast majority, if not an exclusive bunch of RWED posters here, and Joss himself never knew an America during periods of TRUE Capitalism.

Go Joss, as usual. He put it succinctly and accurately, and it's what I see around me every day.

America loves a winner!

Joss deals in fiction, and does it very well.

As for reality... the world of today isn't like it was 100 years ago.

He made lots of money with Avengers, so God bless'im he can afford some corporate disdain when he speaks the truth like that.

@ AU, dude, I've not encountered ANYONE as good with fiction as you. You live & breathe fiction. It is your world view. Even Joss doesn't LIVE his fiction like you do; no wonder why you're so good at it.

It's no secret Joss is a lefty, I'm still a fan. Just like it's no secret Tim Miner is a conservative but they both still seem to get along.

6IX... oh, dear... the problem with capitalism is paper money????, and that capitalism will work only when we exchange things of real value??? (Sounds like barter to me!)

Do you know the meaning of the word "capital"? It's what Marx wrote about (Das Kapital). It means "money".

all the way (I had to reply to two)- this country is so full of brainwashed extremists (many left; many more right) that it's scary.

Sorry Sig, but "Capital" is subjective....

You say tomato, I say tomato...

I know people who practiacly survive ONLY on the "barter" system. The only thing that's sad about it in my eyes is because they're sacraficng their time, money, soul and virtually their LIFE to paper money backed up by NOTHING...

I'd say more, but I don't want to ruin their good things, especially those who LOVE what they do when not working a job that gives them a tax income part time and keeps good ol' Uncle Sammy boy off their back...

He's an Ex-Con who's married with kids trying to make everything right. Why shouldn't he get the benefits that the blacks and mexicans get over the table, even if he has to go under the table to get some of them?

He's an artist. He's not hurting anyone. He's not dealing drugs. He gives people what they want, and because of his talent they pay a high price and wait in line for it.

Even though he has tats so far up his body that he'd never be able to cover them for a Serious job interview, he's good looking and witty enough to be a regular on "Ink"...

I've never gotten a tat, or any body-mods besides a left-earring matching my gf going away to ISU college back when I was 19, but if I ever did now, he'd be the guy to convince me.

I hear that some places by me offer "pain therapy"....

They stick large fish hooks into your back all over the place with wires attached, then they suspend you in the air on said hooks.....

I feel that at my age and how many cigarettes I smoke without jogging or eating food not from aldi that a parachute drop might literally kill me......

I'm highly considering the pain = pleasure route though....

I just hope it doesn't give me an urge for tats and body peircings afterward...

I hate both of them now.....

Nah - just throw some more money at it! Redistribute our wealth upward to the banks and billionaires! It's the capitalist way!

Jack is right.

Quote:

Wikipedia:
Capitalism is an economic system that is based on private ownership of the means of production and the creation of goods or services for profit.

Private ownership of production is the cardinal characteristic of capitalism, not the use of money. Private production can be centered completely on barter, or not. Jack's point that capitalism would be better if it did not involve money does not violate the definition of capitalism.

DT would be able to elaborate on this better, but capitalism allowed a labor economy that is independent of land ownership. It revolutionized the allocation of wealth and put more power in the hands of the populace than anything else since the inception of feudalism.

Of course, the elite corrupted it and tried to take back their power. But in and of itself, capitalism is not evil. Used with limitations (such as those suggested by Jack), capitalism CAN be very empowering to the 99%.

So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
is all the sad world needs.

Thank you CTS....

I sometimes... oftentimes... find myself not very good at expressing what I mean. Thanks again for being a cornerstone of this point.

Really, it only makes sense.

What would you rather "work" for? Gold and silver, or even just Chicken's for your coup and Milk?

There's nothing inherently wrong with the concept of paper money Signy, but the problem comes when those who do NOTHING to ensure they get IT ALL come into play. Those in power continually bastardize the money and make it worth less for us simply because they can. IT'S NOT WORTH ANYTHING!!!!!

You should try bartering Signy. Of course, "the system" calls it completely ILLEGAL in most circumstances, but I've gotten anything to my brakes and a new trasmission done to dental work I couldn't afford without insurance for some work on other people's houses...

No "taxes". No "insurance". No "bureaucracy" anywhere. No "3rd party taking in their rake"....

Just.... I know how to do something that you don't know how to do. Let's trade.....

No, it should just be at the bottom to scroll through. But I just looked at it, and all the posts are jumbled around time & date-wise. Guess the PTB there are finding the controversy too hot for them...

I'm all "blue" again baby..... No "comments" here... just Old Skool FFF.net, and I love it.

Now...

I need some gutters done on the cheap. I'll do anything and everything from interior home improvements and electrical and plumbing work that an inspector would approve of in trade for some gutter work. I don't feel like getting on a 16 foot laddar with no health insurance
