VP Biden is talkikng about large number of folks, all living in the same house, with thin walls. He's trying to 'connect' with this audience, by implying that he's just like them, and that all Latinos live in such stereo typical fashion. Much like the late Reggie White's comments, which many took offense to....

CBS SportsLine wire reports
March 25, 1998

MADISON, Wis. -- Most people invited to speak to the Wisconsin Legislature give five minutes of pleasantries, get a few moments of applause and go home.

Lawmakers weren't expecting the earful Reggie White had in store for them Wednesday.

They thought the Green Bay Packers star and ordained minister came to talk about his community work and a recent trip to Israel.

White did, but his nearly hour-long speech also included remarks on homosexuality, race and slavery that turned the Assembly's applause to stunned silence.

White said the United States has gotten away from God, in part by allowing homosexuality to "run rampant."

HOMOSEXUALITY IS a sin, and the plight of gays and lesbians should not be compared to that of blacks, White told lawmakers.

"Homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race," White said. "People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and back-stabbing."

White said he has thought about why God created different races. Each race has certain gifts, he said.

Blacks are gifted at worship and celebration, White said.

"If you go to a black church, you see people jumping up and down because they really get into it," he said.

Whites are good at organization, White said.

"You guys do a good job of building businesses and things of that nature, and you know how to tap into money," he said.

"Hispanics were gifted in family structure, and you can see a Hispanic person, and they can put 20, 30 people in one home."

THE JAPANESE AND other Asians are inventive, and "can turn a television into a watch," White said. Indians are gifted in spirituality, he said

You know, Rap, regardless of the variety of individual expression, there is such a thing as latino culture. And American Catholic culture. And there is some overlap there. And Biden knows that. Cultural commonality is one of the things that humans find most comforting on this earth. He was speaking to that. Sorry all you got is hate on this one. And trying to get some traction for hating Joe Biden by throwing up this other guy from 14 freakin' years ago totally arbitrarily, is the weakest of weak sauce. Your guilt by free association tactics ain't gonna work.

Wow, that was a stretch! I read the article, wondering "what's this got to do with Biden?", then saw your response and went back and watched the video of Biden. The two are TOTALLY unrelated, and what Biden said wasn't offensive to me, nor obviously to the audience. What's the point he's trying to make, I wonder--aside from the obvious "Biden bad".

The other one was from 14 years ago? And he connected the two exactly how? Really reaching, ain't he?

So, when a Democrat ( like Biden ) panders to an audience, of a specific make up, he's showing respect and appreciation for the differences which make that group unique. However, when anyone else, not a Democrat or Liberal, takes note of certain qualifiers or differences, say like Ross Perot calling members of the naacp " you people ", he's being bigoted, racist and demeaning.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification.

You're feigning ignorance here, for obvious reasons, and I'd have thought anyone of your age would have grown out of such childishness.

Jeez, Rap. If you say so?

Now you're going back a full 20 years to reference yet another triviality I for one never had a word to say about. As it stands, I hardly see Perot's comment as anything but a really tragic choice of words. Whoopsie, wrong thing to say! Until that whole mix up on his front lawn I was gonna vote for the guy. And in the early months of the freakin' Clinton admin. I often wished I had.

See, me, I recognize politicians as human beings first and foremost, so this whole "gaffegate" b.s. is just that: bullshit. But, by all means, continue to assume that everyone who ever disagrees with you is some kind of lock-step Democrat toadie. Whatever works, right?

HK -

Biden's initial 'gaffe' is dropping the tacky ' parents having sex with thin walls in a full house ' remark. But if you look at more of what he said, and the context in what he was talking about, and to whom, he's having the equivolent to what YOU claim is a " tragic choice of words ".

So, to wrap it up for you, Biden was basically saying...

Hey, all you Latinos, who love to crowd your large families into cheap, small houses with thin walls, guess what? I'm JUST like you! I'm one of you! I feel your pain!

Biden is interjecting the exact same stereo typical view of Latinos as Reggie White did. Only Biden wasn't so overt about it. And Reggie was ridiculed , by many, for his remarks, all we'll hear about is Biden and his parents 'doing it', with the expected " Oh, that Joe. He's at it again " * chuckle, snort *... and now, here's Mindy with the weather!

Listen Rap,

You are not schooling me on this. I know exactly what you're doing and I know perfectly well what Biden was saying. He was IDENTIFYING with a culturally relevent experience which he shared growing up poor and catholic. But now you've moved your goal post just a smidge (more to come there, I'm sure, if and when this thread heats up) because now it's not so much the "racism" but the "tackiness" of talking about large families in small homes and the parents making love sometimes. Sorry you're such a prude. What with women using the VAGINA word on the floors of state senates, and sitting VP's acknowledging that parents have sex, it must feel like your world is coming to an end. Or something.

Carry on.

Yeah, Solodad O'Brien... extreme right winger.

I took the liberty of copying your own words, so you can't go back an edit them out, like you've done before.

I'm guessing you can't show any proof of any Democrat or Liberal here saying that Ross Perot was "bigoted, racist, and demeaning".

" here " ? When did I ever confine my remarks to mean things only said HERE, in this forum? Oh, that's right.. Never did.

And as for Ross Perot, and " you people " ?

Quote:

"Financially at least, it's going to be a long, hot summer," Perot said. "Now I don't have to tell you who gets hurt first when this sort of thing happens, do I? You people do, your people do. I know that, you know that."

After the 30-minute speech, delegate Harold A. Sanders, president of the Tucson, Ariz., branch of the NAACP, said: "Ross Perot worries me. I'm not sure that in the area of civil rights he has the cultural sensitivity that's required or the staff to advise him. His comments on drugs and crime were offensive. If he'd said they were a problem for all of us, I could have accepted that. But his remarks were very insensitive. Once again, he's shown he has not done his homework."

Delegate Georgia Verdier, of Corning, N.Y., agreed, saying, "It's not a 'you' thing and an 'I' thing. It's a 'we' thing."

Perot, in an interview with CNN several hours after the speech, said "it never occurred to me" that any of his listeners would be offended by his remarks and apologized to those who were.

Where was I wrong? I asked you to show where anyone HERE had sad Perot was a racist.

You failed to do so, proving me completely right.

You tried to bring this into some sort of relevance HERE by playing the "But... PEROT!" card, and nobody HERE would play along, so you tried to say that liberals called Perot a racist. I asked you for proof that any liberals HERE had done so.

How could you not get that?

I tend to be quite careful with my words, Rappy. I opened a door, and you walked right into it. Again.

And the funniest part? In trying to prove me wrong, in expanding your "proof" far beyond the scope of the discussion HERE, you couldn't even find evidence of any liberals even in your own cherry-picked, out-of-context quotes who called him racist, or bigoted, which after all was your original claim HERE.

Repeat after me...

Once again, Kwicko has shown himself to be 100% right and correct, while I, Rappy, bow to his greater knowledge, and admit to being wrong, as always.

And how could YOU not get the point I was making, that if a white, conservative guy acknowledges differences in a group of minorities, he's " racist ", but if it's a Lib / Dem doing it, HE " understands " and appreciates them.

What 'door' are you yapping on about ? I made a point, I've backed it up, with evidence and examples, and you're STILL trying to pick a fight over it, by fabricating this non sequitur of saying where did anyone HERE called Perot racist or bigoted, as if that matters one iota to the discussion. It doesn't.

Nothing was 'cherry-picked', nothing was remotely ' out of context', and in fact, it was explicitly IN context, as it was from the very folks who were there in attendance of when Perot spoke.

Where did he get that??? There's a big difference between saying "YOUR people", which indicates a specific group of people, and describing a personal experience with which others might identify.

Raptor's whole premise is ridiculous. In other words, one may never relate a personal experience lest it be seen as sucking up to a group of people, I take it. Perot didn't say anything about himself, and his use of "your people"--what can that mean, except "the group of people to whom you are a part"? GROUP of people, got it? What Biden did was tell something about his own past--sure, for political reasons--to people who might have experienced the same thing. Did he say "YOUR people would understand that" or anything even close to that? He made a joke to the effect of "I'm sure none of you have experienced that"...meaning individuals. Yeah, he was talking to a crowd which WOULD have a greater likelihood of having experienced it, but he was talking to them as someone who experienced the same thing, not as someone talking from outside the group and further distancing himself by saying 'YOUR people".

All of which is a waste of typing, I realize. Raptor just jumped on it because some right-wing source jumped on it and gave him the talking points, nothing more. He's not interested in understanding, just in arguing.

No. When someone shares an experience with an audience of a makeup which has encountered the same sort of thing, he's using something he's shared with them as a political ploy.
