Hello,

I feel about this the same way I felt about the Fast and Furious investigation documents. Why should this be withheld? What is the danger is opening things up to complete transparency?

Why should this man want to keep much of his tax history a secret? What is damnable in those documents?

Heard a RIGHT-WING pundit today say there were only three possible reasons he won't release them:

1) He had a LOT more money in tax shelters before that we don't know about;

2) He did something actually nefarious; or

3) He's stupid.

That about covers it for me. He's got so many people ON BOTH SIDES urging him to put them out there--the Republican pundits making it quite clear that the best way to deal with WHATEVER's in there he might not want known is to get it out, apologize or whatever, and MOVE ON--that his team's insistence on holding them back seems just that...stupid.

Everything he used as an excuse on FauxNews sounds just the same...stupid. At LEAST they could work on coming up with something that doesn't sound like such evasive bullshit, couldn't they?

As much as I'd enjoy seeing Romney hauled off on charges for seriously nefarious acts, I think in the end he's likely not done anything horribly illegal. He's got too many advisers to let that happen - they've pushed the boundaries just the right amount, far enough that you or I would get busted for doing it, but a bizzilionaire has nothing to worry about, legally speaking, with his big-name daddy, big-name friends, and a whole cult to back him up. Oh, and besides the Repubs there's also that Mormon religious group...

Now, politically? Different story.

Romney's financial history is packed full of a bunch of seriously impolitic shit. The worst part, for him, is that he's being so stupid about dealing with it that it's blowing up in his face. The cover up is worse than the act. (Or maybe not - if I ever see those returns I may sing a different song...)

Good work Mitt. Keep it up.

Truth be told A, I didn't read it, nor do I have any interest in reading it.

The burden is on Romney. If he doesn't want to "step in the limelight", then back the F out now.

EVERY SINGLE ONE of my union friends, whether in REAL unions like pipefitters or ironworkers, or fake unions like teachers unions..... they all have their salaires posted online and sometimes on a wall where they work (just to make regular wage employees HATE them, I would assume).

Sorry Romney. I love Britney Spears. Some people loved her so much that they know some dark crap and have photographs of it by the most depraved PR..... The only reason they were looking at what she was doing is because there was a built in base of income for the end product of photos most "un-paid" women would be scarred for life finding out was put on the internet.

Hell, girls like Vanessa Hudgens somehow "accidentially" get nude photos posted by a supposed ex and we just accept that story as fact.

Sorry Mitt.....

I know you're a devoted Moorman and all, but you're going to have to share the size of your Johnson with the rest of the world now that you want to be Prez, metaphorically speaking.

Here's the rub, and my own personal deflection from "the rub", and one I think you'll agree with Anthony.

You and I, we're not public servants, nor do I feel that either of us would EVER want to be one (I assume my logic is kosher so far????)

Mitt strives to get into the Ultimate position of Tax Payer Funded control in the entire world.

For those of us in the sidelines of this conversation, can you understand the gap????

Just in case you don't.....

If you're just a citizen, the LAW (should be) Innocent Until Proven Guilty.

If you're running for office, the LAW (should be) Guilty Until Proven Innocent.

I'm glad Britney bounced back, but just ask Lindsay Lohan how the public life has been going for her ruined career.

If I was her, I'd be happy that nobody was talking about me anymore. Love him or hate him, Obama's failures have FAR outweighed any of Lindsay's.

Show your tax statements Mitt! (And I do truly hope they RUIN you before the election and we can have a real contender to Obama)

I'm not running for office and I talk about my own finances all the time, much to Kwick's and Niki's chagrin....

And they're not 1/100th of yours, my man....

Yup, Mike, that about covers it. Waiting to see whether he's FORCED to show them or not...if he never does, I'll more seriously question if there's something to hide besides his wealth and off-shore banking.

Either way, he's not playing any of this particularly well, on all fronts. I heard he hired a new staff...or ad staff, I'm not sure which. If it's his staff who've been advising him, probably a good thing. Tho' I think it more likely it's Rove and his ilk doing the advising, myownself...

Well, gosh, he should know, right?

If Romney gets in, it will be Bush On Steroids, simple as that. It's funnier than hell to hear him distance himself from Bush, when virtually ALL his advisors are Bush folks and he's got Turdblossom and his buddies making PACs for him, getting donations for him, and "proudly" standing behind him.

Earlier today I was pondering McCain, thinking that people must be all over him to hear what was in all those years of Romney's tax returns. But then I read the following, which is the best speculation I've heard about this Romney's tax fiasco (and the writer makes it clear that this is PURELY speculation):

When the stock market collapsed in 2008, the wealthiest investors fared worse than everyone else...

As a member of the ultra-rich, Romney probably wasn’t spared major losses. And it’s possible he suffered a large enough capital loss that, carried forward and coupled with his various offshore tax havens, he wound up paying no U.S. federal taxes at all in 2009. If true, this would be politically deadly for him. Even assuming that his return was thoroughly clean and legal—a safe assumption, it seems to me—the fallout would dwarf the controversy that attended the news that Romney had paid a tax rate of just 14 percent in 2010 and that estimated he’d pay a similar rate in 2011.

The “zero tax in 2009” theory—again, this is sheer speculation—gains further sustenance when you consider it’s the only year for which nobody knows anything about Romney’s taxes. He’s revealed what’s in his 2010 and 2011 returns, and he reportedly submitted 20-some years’ worth of returns to the McCain campaign when he was being vetted for vice president in 2008. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s chief strategist in that campaign, said on MSNBC last night that while he didn’t examine Romney’s returns himself, nothing that McCain’s vetters found in them disqualified Romney from consideration.

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-07-17/whats-romney-hiding-in
-his-tax-returns

It just hadn't occurred to me that - duh! - of course McCain never saw Romney's taxes during the collapse. No one has seen those but Mitt, his closest minions, and the IRS.

A CNN news host came to the same conclusion - that the problem for Mitt here is probably a very low taxe rate. She made the argument that he should just release his tax info and be honest, saying something like: "Yes, I paid very low (or no) taxes, but this is because the laws are flawed and I want to fix them!"

This anchor is being foolish, imo. Romney would lose the basis of his financial support if he made promises to get rid of loopholes and low rates for the wealthy. I've seen calculations: the uber-wealthy stand to make so much many from keeping their tax breaks that it's a no-brainer to shove a few million at Mitt's superPACs. If he no longer supports their tax breaks and loopholes, they'd have no reason to do it.

If this speculation is anywhere near true, Romney is fcuked. He absolutely can't release those tax records. But he also looks really really bad hiding them.

Keep the Shiny side up

I expect he doesn't want to release them because they'd get the same sort of reception from the Bainers as Pres. Obama's birth certificate gets from the Birthers.

I'm betting that if Gov. Romney releases copies of his returns and they show nothing incorrect, the Bainers will accuse him of having altered them. Since the IRS can't legally confirm or deny their correctness, we'd have the same "Is fake. Isn't fake." nonsense until the election. Oh, boy.

Hello,

This is the second time I've seen you equate 'Bainers' to 'Birthers.' I'm not sure the comparison is apt. With the Birthers, there is no substantive evidence of their concerns. With Bainers, there are at least some official documents that show nominal ownership and control long after both were supposedly surrendered. The defense is that such ownership and control was merely a legal technicality, and not a functioning fact. However, while the birther claims are based on rumor and innuendo, the Bain concerns stem from actual official documents and require a larger context in order to dismiss.

In essence, it is a comparison between something unsubstantiated preposterous, and something which is technically true, but possibly not practically poignant.

Equivocating the two situations creates the erroneous impression that you have a personal bias on the matter, something I'm sure you did not intend.

"Is!.. Isn't!" Is a perfectly apt comparison. It's not about the substance of the argument, it's about the shrill belief on either side.

Since there's no way to win an argument with a believer, the only logical move is not to play.

What you said, Anthony. And if everyone who's asking to see those returns is a "Bainer", which, for the reasons you gave, is absurd, then there's an awful lot of high-placed Republicans calling for Romney to release the returns...I guess they're the equivalent of Birthers, too, yes?

To compare the two is illogical on many fronts, starting with the fact that no previous candidate has been required to show his birth certificate, while it is a long-held tradition that they make public their tax returns. The birther controversy was BEGUN by good old Orly Taitz, who is out of her mind on her best day; there has never been any substantiation of it, his birth certificate WAS shown, and there's an end to it except for those who hate Obama so much or are so brainwashed that they won't let go.

Romney's tax returns, on the other hand, have been called for by people on his own side, pundits on both sides, supposed political "experts", and others...added to which, there isn't nearly the outcry among democratic extremists as there is from the birthers...INCLUDING Republican legislators, who continue to this day to hint about it.

I'll bet money if/when Romney relases them, you won't see people claiming they're faked nearly to the extent you have from birthers, and the veracity of them will be considerably more accepted.

No, I think the zero-tax theory is a good one; so is the theory that he had much more invested overseas--which looks bad--and that his tax rate in general has been lower than we already know--which also looks bad.

The possibility that he did something actually illegal is pretty low, in my opinion, but even that is possible. I'm crossing fingers that's not the answer, because it would make a mess, and what would the Republicans do then??? Their convention is just around the corner...who would they get to replace him at this late date? Ron Paul?? He's the only other one with delegates. It would be a total mess, and I don't want that. I want Romney as the Republican candidate, he's our best option for a second term.

More than anything, however, I think Romney is afraid of losing support because of what's in them. There is little, if any, comparison between birthers and the so-called "Bainers".

(Just as a side note, score one for our "non-partisan" Geezer, defending the right and coining a new term I hadn't heard before to disparage those on the left calling for the tax returns.)

I do tend to edit something I respond to, leaving only the stuff I want to respond to. It this case, your post, I thought that all I cut was your signiture. You're right, I see where you did reset the color to white, and I missed it somehow. and that's the difference between you and Niki. She doesn't do that, and my responses come out in blue, which annoys me.

I DO try not to distort the context of what I'm replying to. I'm sure that sometimes I do.

And if I pi***d you off, I am sorry. I was momentarily annoyed myself, and I vented. I'm over it now, and was, even then, largely kidding.

And you are right, the difference of relevance between birthers and Bainers is substantial. My point is that relevance ADDS to the already existing sufficient reason for payback. Mitt's panicking from the Bainer attack already, whining about fairness and personal insult. He better get used to it-- his allies have been doing it to Obama for at least 4 years, to his benefit. And he went negative during the primaries, against his fellow Republicans. Until he rejects what they've been doing, and makes it stick, he better expect to get it back, and better toughen up and quit whinging about it.

And again, I see your point of view, and if I offended you, I most humbly and sincerely apologize.

ETA-- welol, Damm, it did it again. My response came out all invisible. Let's see if this correction works.

Edit summore- Antt, I cut a line from INSIDE the complete quote, right before the Thomas Szazz quote, it was font color = FFFF, I think, inside pointy brackets. Leaving it in made my response come out black on black, i.e., invisible. I cut out that line and , aha, what I wrote came out white on black, which is to say, readable.

Hello,

I honestly don't know what's going on with the color.

It's evident the color is being returned to white, but nontheless the subsequent content appears black. I'm not sure why this is.

Hello NewOld,

Please feel free to test a new reply with quote to see if the problem is resolved.

I added a second, reduntant font white command.

I do not know why it helps but I think it has solved the problem.

It's a lot easier just to end the current font color than replacing one font color with another. I do that when I quote Niki's posts, and I did it to the quote above. (I also add a second /font for Niki because she changes the font face, too.)

And if you need to test stuff in the future, there's a nice "official" test thread here:

NewOld, I put an "end font color" code on mine, too...if the entire thing is quoted, the person's reply should come out normal. I don't know what the code is for "white", if someone can tell me, I'll do that as well. I don't want my font color screwing up anyone else, so any way I can find to avoid that is fine with me. Just someone let me know how to do it, please.
I took my signature out recently, so the coding probably disappeared with it. Will re-insert it, but if the problem was experienced before I removed my sig, then it'll persist. Tell me how I can fix it.

Testing -- yeah, when I just close the code, the color returns to normal when I do it...does it for others? If so, all you have to do is quote the entire post or, given mine are sometimes long (Noooo!), copy everything you want PLUS the coding at the end. Hope that helps.

Ying, I see you used a "color=0000", would that work as well as closing the font color?

No. The color=000000 is for Anthony's black font. But I fixed your /font tags in the quote above, so if you put those in your signature it should work.

If you want to use font colors in your posts, and then NOT have them taint everyone else's replies, then close your posts with "/font color" in the brackets.

As it is, y'all keep telling the font to just change to a different hexadecimal color code, only it's not working correctly. I've had good luck with the /font color tag, because whatever color you were using, it's not saying to stop using that color and go back to the default. See my tagline and sig for examples.

Hello,

This is the second time I've seen you equate 'Bainers' to 'Birthers.' I'm not sure the comparison is apt...

"Is!.. Isn't!" Is a perfectly apt comparison. It's not about the substance of the argument, it's about the shrill belief on either side.

Since there's no way to win an argument with a believer, the only logical move is not to play.

That's equally appropriate for any of the so-called "Fast & Furious" hullaballou. Believers are unable and/or unwilling to look at facts with any objectivity, so are unable to have a rational conversation about the matter in any fashion.

No, Niki - yours says at the close, "/font" "/font". *NOT* "/font color". The word "color" seems to matter, it would appear.

OH, look at that - it seems to have worked finally! Maybe you just had one "/font" before, so it was closing the Comic Sans typeface instead? (By the way, I nominated Comic Sans as the official "sarcasm" font, because I can never take anything written in that font completely seriously. )

--Anthony

Dammit, ANT, remove that invisible comment- it doesn't edit out and so it F888s up responses.

I don't care whether it's substantive or not-- what's sauce for the goose is good for the gander. Birthers been beating their moot point for at least 4 years. Hello,

First, I take the trouble to return font color to white at the end of my signature line, so you must not be quoting me entire if you have a coloration problem.

Second of all, I was going to respond to this:

Quote:

It's not about the substance of the argument

With the fact that substance is important. Arguments based on substance are the product of people who employ rational thinking, and rational thinkers can be moved by evidence. Arguments based on nothing are the product of partisan true believers who can't be reached.

I think it was a strong argument.

Until you posted what you posted, citing yourself as caring for this based on revenge and not rational thought.

Anthony, I took the liberty of changing the "font color - FFFFFF" tax to "/font color" in this reply, and it changed the text back to white.

What I've been doing when replying to you is just editing out the whole hidden text part, tags and all, because it really does mess things up, and makes my reply to you invisible otherwise.

Right there with you. I made images of the underground for oil companies. Couldn't give a shit about the oil, I liked finding ways to sharpen and visualize the images... I'm still opinionated about these kinds of things. Color is important.

OK, really I'm posting this just to test your use of tags. I'm a fan of colored fonts, but it seems silly that now, in 2012, it's still a formatting issue. I should be able to simply type stuff at the end of your quoted post and have it work all right, without any weird fonts or colors.

My solution has always been to delete all formatting in a quoted post. I like simple. I like to see as much as possible on one screen, and all those extra lines of formatting and signatures, etc, just take up space.

I'm also posting this to make a request: Niki, when you post a link, please put in a blank line after it, before anything else. I've noticed this for some time. If you would just include a line break before your /quote or /font or whatever tags you end your post with, your links won't bleed over to the next line. It seems I always have to copy and paste your link rather than clicking on it, and this might be the fix.

OK, it's late. I'm sleepy.

ETA: these tags worked! I got no blue font.

This is good advice, and applies to everybody, not Niki alone.

And it applies to photos, gifs, jpegs, etc., too, not just links.

Ever hit "Reply With Quote" when someone had a pic in their post, and your reply comes out gray and their pic in your reply is a broken-image box? That's 'cause they didn't have a line-break after the image...

I'll probably continue to use the term "Bainers" as shorthand for the folks who want to make an issue of this. Seems better than having to write "Folks who want to keep this issue alive after many un-biased news agencies have found there's nothing to it, sort'a like they found there's nothing to the Obama birth certificate chase."

You and I both know that neither the "Birthers" or the "Bainers" really hope to change the mind of anyone who's not already totally invested in their point of view. It's just something to keep the ultras fired up. Seems to be working here.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

It's funny, because Romney himself seems to be a birther now. He keeps referring to Obama as "foreign", which can really only be taken one of two ways: Either he thinks Obama really is a foreigner (not an American citizen), or he thinks Obama is "foreign" just because he's black, and black people can never truly be Americans.

So I'll ask again: Is Romney a birther, or is he a racist? Or is he both?

It's funny that "Bainer" when used as a derogatory term by right-wing idiots sounds exactly like the Speaker of the House's last name.

Guess your no fan of Boehner...

I always have wondered how they got a pronunciation of "a" out of the letters "oeh" . I see a name spelled like that, the sound that comes out of my mouth is:

"boner."

Little too much truth in advertising there, perhaps.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Mike, yeah, I see what happens in the "bluFFF" with the bleeding over. Something's screwed up there. I tried putting a space after the quote; that screwed up the italics I used in the cite. I tried putting a space after the coding for italics; that screwed up something else (I forget what). One of the reasons I came back to the beta site, I just said "screw it"! Another reason was often I would click on 'post" and nothing would happen. Bah.

I will try your suggestion of putting a blank like after a quote, and we'll see how that works. Such a shame all that stuff is screwed up; it should simply WORK. Then again, computers...

Romney's not a birther; it's campaign tactics, you know that. They're having trouble with their candidate; he doesn't want to talk about his time as governor, his religion, his time with Bain, or it would seem much of anything ELSE...he has one message and only one message: "I'm not Obama". Obviously the more the campaign can make Obama look, be it the economy or that he's an "other", it works for them. It's true, tho', it only works on the fringers and those already voting for Romney; aside from that, it's just a waste of dog-whistle rhetoric.

Equally absurd is arguing against those who want to see Romney's tax returns. Obama's birth certificate had NO validity in anything, it was merely Orly Taitz looking for another obsession, and that it lingers merely shows how much some fringe elements hate Obama. Romney's tax returns are PERTINENT to choosing a President, given the things he's expressed as his credentials; the fact that he is SO adamant about not showing them understandably makes people believe there's something to hide. To call such people "Bainers" is tantamount to calling them unreasonable conspiracy theorists, which the birthers and "truthers" (in my opinion) were and continue to be, but which THEY are not.

It's just convenient politispeak to label them as such, nothing more. It's perfectly reasonable to want to know about Romney's finances; other candidates have done it; there should be no problem with it. I guess the Republicans calling for him to show them makes THEM "Bainers" too, right?
