I don't even know what Chick-fil-a services; I ssume the word play on "fillet" means chicken breasts or something? I know my visceral response is to view them as typical American fast-food franchise butchering the language; beyond that I've not known anything. We haven't got anything like them out here, so I wasn't surprised it's become such an issue in the areas which have them. But I found this interesting:
Quote:

Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy has been in the news a lot lately over his recent remarks against same-sex marriage. But it's Cathy's personal wealth and political contributions that are making headlines.

Dan Cathy and Executive Vice President Donald Cathy have joined the ranks of the world's richest, according to financial research firm Privco.

The row over same-sex marriage could see thousands of Christians flocking to Chick-fil-A on Wednesday, while same-sex couples will turn up at the fast-food chain Friday for public displays of affection.

Both events are intended as mass shows of support by people on both sides of the marriage issue and mark the latest round in a longstanding beef that gay and lesbian rights groups have with Chick-fil-A's leadership, which has openly espoused biblical values, not only in its operating principles but in its conservative definition of family as well.

The controversy came to a boil after an interview with the fast food restaurant chain's president and COO Dan Cathy appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16 and he weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.

Discovering they are active politically puts a differnt view on it, for me. I have nothing against companies having political views, or even espousing them, but when they are very rich and use some of that money to donate to candidates, I think the public has every right to boycott them in protest. JMHO.

They make a pretty good, relatively healthy, chicken breast fillet sandwich. My daughter loves their product, but the nearest one we know about is a 10 mile drive. So we don't eat there often. But when we're shopping at the mall it's near, we used to make a point of eating there.

Because of their position, I'm not going to go out of my way to eat there any time soon. It's very unfortunate.

Hello,

Chick fil a is like a higher quality Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, although opinions vary on their food. It's a fast-food chain.

I think anybody and any company has the right to use their freedom of speech to express any opinion.

I think anybody else has the right to use their freedom of speech to express their own opinion, including boycotting a business, protesting it, engaging in letter writing campaigns, and etcetera.

Their whole political/anti-gay thing has been a pretty open secret for awhile, so it's a little weird to me that everyone's acting shocked now. I've avoided the place for most of my life. (Aside from disliking the hardcore fundamentalist Christian leanings of the place, I find their chicken bland and unappealing.)

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

I agree.

How do you feel about mayors and city council members in various cities saying that they'll throw up legal barriers against Chick-fil-a stores trying to open in their jurisdictions because they disagree with the owner's views? I do have a problem with that.

Hello,

I have a problem with that, too. The people can protest the stores. But the law is the law, and there are very clear laws about how you open a business. Tinkering with them to oppress the views of a particular business is wrong, whether you are blocking a porn store or a Christian chicken dealer.

Hello,

You are not alone. Many, many people have hustled to the Chick fil a stores. Either to support speech rights, or to support the oppression of homosexuals. Or perhaps both. Judging by your post, I'd say the appeal was broad, and not limited to just one.

Hello,

There is at least some portion of the citizenry who has rallied to the cause of supporting Chick-fil-a's position. For some, Chick-fil-a's efforts are a siren's call, summoning them to delight in delicious chicken and even more delectable liberty suppression.

Metaphorically, hate may turn out to be a surprisingly popular condiment this summer.

Wanted to go twice today, but only made it once.

Went after the breakfast rush, for an early lunch. ( Char-grilled Chicken salad, small fries, large diet coke , fyi )

The crowd was relatively light, as it was pre-11 AM for lunch. Wasn't sure what to make of that, but boy, as the day wore on, I heard more and more stories of how slammed CFA's were around the country.

So, after ( I had assumed ) what would be the dinner rush, I swung by again to see if I could pick up something for dinner.

FORGET ABOUT IT! The joint was hoppin' w/ business ! It was like the movie Project X, with cars streaming in from all over, but w/ families instead of drunk HS kids. After doing a once around, I decided they would do just fine w/ out my repeat business for the day, and moved on to the KFC down the street.

I had to swerve to miss a tumble weed in the parking lot, it was so desolate and empty. I wasn't sure if they were open, but they were. Nice folks there too. I guess they were glad for the business, because the service was great. The food was a bit skimpy, but it tasted fine. ( grilled 2 piece, w/ corn side, btw )

What I love about the Chick-fil-A appreciation day is that it was TRULY grass roots. There were no 'buy1get1free' coupons, or anything like that. Maybe some places did that, but none here in ATL. It was just another Wednesday, and yet everyone was flocking there, and happily put up w/ the extra wait.

There were no reports of any riots, vandalism, and no one pooped on any police cars. Everyone was in a good mood, dressed appropriately, and seemed to be having a good time.

I've not heard if any stores ran out of food, but I bet no one fussed if they did. I gotta think this was their biggest sales day in history.

The hate is coming 100% from the Left, Anthony.

100%

There was nothing, in the least, that anyone from CFA said that remotely suggested or promoted the idea of oppression 'homosexuals'.

It's called free speech, pal. Maybe you've heard of it ?

Yup, when you hang gay people by the neck with a rope, you definitely take away their free speech.

I'm not at all surprised that Rappy doesn't find lynching, or CFA's CEO's support for it, "oppression" in the least.

You can disagree on gay rights, but when you actively support laws that prescribe the death penalty for homosexuals, the idea that you aren't supporting oppression is pretty ludicrous.

Hello,

It's interesting to watch this unfold, because there are many people who advise they are supporting Chik-fil-a's free speech rights by taking their business there.

The oddity is that Chik-fil-a's free speech rights aren't under contest.

However, purchasing from the business in order to support 'free speech' is much easier than supporting their position of oppression.

After all, supporting homosexual oppression might possibly leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

Fortunately, a sprinkle of artificial flavoring makes the whole affair easy to swallow.

And if one truly believes that the artificial flavoring is genuine, one can avoid indigestion and sleep well.

Chick-fil-A in Martinsburg re-opens after bomb threat

MARTINSBURG - Police and fire crews closed down the Chick-fil-A on Foxcroft Avenue in Martinsburg for nearly three hours following a bomb threat that was called in just before 1 p.m. today.

The caller mentioned that a "device" had been placed within the restaurant. The building was evacuated, but was deemed safe at about 3:45 p.m. after no bomb or any other type of device was discovered.

Martinsburg City Police and the Martinsburg Fire Department personnel investigated the scene, along with Berkeley County Sheriff Kenny Lemaster. A National Park Ranger with a canine unit arrived at the scene at approximately 2:45 p.m. to assist, and a second from the West Virginia State Police arrived later as well.

Kwickie - Talk about being a purveyor of lies and distortions.

An image of a morbidly fat person sitting on a chair, with a photo shopped logo of Chick-Fil-A makes it so in your world?

Guess so. Style over substance is the MO for the Left.

As far as fast food goes, I find it hi-larious that the hate filled gay activists are telling folks to go to McDonald's for a chicken sandwich, instead of CFA.

McDonald's - Premium Grilled Chicken Club - 460 calories, 1030 sodium. http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/food/full_menu/chicken.html

CFA Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich - 290 Calories, 780 Sodium.

That chair should have a MickyD's or BK logo on the back of it, if you wanted to be anywhere NEAR honest. But you don't.

A handful of tweets, taken completely out of context, doesn't in the least paint the full picture. What I saw with my own eyes, and what everyone saw across the nation, was how real Americans flocked to CFA, to support free speech and a solid company that's been in business for 45 years.

Quote:

A powerful New York politician claims she was just speaking as a private citizen when she tried to run Chick-fil-A out of town, but she used her official letterhead and even invoked her position as City Council speaker to apply pressure on the embattled chicken chain.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has mayoral aspirations, sent a letter to New York University president John Sexton on Saturday asking the school to immediately end their contract with the fast food restaurant. The Atlanta-based company's sole New York City outlet is in the school's food court.

"I write as the Speaker of the NYC Council, and on behalf of my family. NYC is a place where we celebrate diversity. We do not believe in denigrating others. We revel in the diversity of all our citizens and their families,” the letter begins.

"Let me be clear I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views," Quinn, an open lesbian who recently married her longtime partner, also wrote in the letter. "We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that."

“As such I urge you to sever your relationship with the Chick&-fil-A establishment that exists on your campus,” the speaker added.

The letter has drawn the ire from others on the council.

“She can write to someone as a council member, but if she states that she is writing as the Speaker it can only be on behalf of the entire council. She has to have the majority vote of the council, and I don’t recall voting on this matter,” City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens) told FoxNews.com. “A stance on gay marriage is in no way a forum to prevent someone form running a business in a community.

“If we allow something like this, then the next letter might be concerning someone’s view on abortion.”

A spokesperson for Quinn told FoxNews.com in a written statement that, while officials in other cities have said they would block Chick-fil-A through land-use means, Quinn was just expressing her own views.

“Christine Quinn was simply voicing her own opinion; she fully understands that Mr. Cathy has the right to say and donate to anything he wants. But she has the right to use her voice just as much as he does,” Quinn’s spokesperson added.

The speaker elaborated on her stance and seemingly backpedaled while speaking with reporters at an event in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

“I support businesses that are open and inclusive -- that reflect the viewpoint of New York City, the most in diverse city in the world. That said, businesses that follow our laws have a right to open here,” said Quinn during the announcement of the city starting a career center for veterans. “We are asking Mr. Cathy to reconsider, open up his mind and really overcome his homophobia and stop investing his money in efforts to limit the rights of LGBT Americans. I’m raising my voice -- which can be loud at times -- but I’m never going to misuse this office in any way at all.”

Whether the school will take Quinn's advice remains to be seen. In 2011, NYU’s Student Senators Council considered a resolution to remove Chick-fil-A from campus but ultimately ruled that, “to ban any entity from campus for ideological reasons is, in most every case, to limit freedom of expression,” and did not seek a resolution from the full University Senate.

But John Beckman, a spokesman for NYU, tells FoxNews.com in a written statement that given the recent news, the matter will be revisited by school officials.

“The University Administration will ask the University Senate to take up the issue of Chick-fil-A’s status on campus again when it reconvenes this fall to make a recommendation on how to proceed,” he said.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said last week that he would not follow the lead of his counterparts in Chicago, San Francisco and Boston, who all said Chick-fil-A was not welcome in their cities. Bloomberg said it was “inappropriate” for any government to decide if a business can or cannot operate in a city because of someone's political views.

Quinn also had posted a petition on Change.org last week that demands Cathy apologize for his remarks. Another petition on the website was created by an NYU student and gathered 15,000 signatures of students also demanding that the chicken chain be removed from the campus.

Cathy has the right to his opinions. We have the right to agree or disagree with his view, and patronize CFA accordingly.

What politicians do NOT have the right to do is ban a business because of the views of its owner.

How many of these Left wing groups support the WTC mosque ?

Hypocrites.

When mayors involve themselves in their official, government capacity, it has everything to do with free speech. The protests by individuals do not, as that is also free speech. Regardless of how Mr. Cathy spends his money, he is not oppressing anyone. He can support organizations that lobby for causes he believes in. Has one dollar been used to purchase or pay for a stormtrooper to oppress gay people? No.

But by all means, concentrate on the activities of a chicken sandwich magnate. Let's ignore the flash crash on Wall Street. The economy that's still tanking 4 years on. The Ebola outbreak in Africa. Runaway unemployment. The current drought that's going to make for higher food costs. India's power grid failure that's a warning sign for the US power grid. Yeah, gay people having someone who doesn't like their lifestyle is way more important.

He can certainly spend his money this way. However, money spent this way can indeed result in oppression. When you support a law that will have a government oppressing people, you are indeed supporting oppression. It's simply a legal form of support for oppression.

Aint it funny how any issue the right doesn't want to talk about is a non-story. But they'll sure latch onto important stuff... like the "War on Christmas".

So long as there isn't a Government directive to shut them down for their views, I'm in FULL support of people boycotting them.

Sadly, I think it will take a lot more than a group chock full of vegans who didn't eat there anyway to change a bunch of Christian people's minds that they were wrong.

Moby wasn't buying Chick-fil-a before, and He SURE AS HELL isn't going to buy any now!

Quote:

How do you feel about mayors and city council members in various cities saying that they'll throw up legal barriers against Chick-fil-a stores trying to open in their jurisdictions because they disagree with the owner's views?
Yes, KPO, I don't like that either. It's simply wrong, from every perspective, whatever excuses they may come up with.

I don't like them, I don't like what they espouse, and I don't like who they support. But that goes beyond the pale.

On the other hand, I heard some stuff that made me curious. Apparently there are quite a few lawsuits against them for discrimination--usually against women. A couple of examples:
Quote:

Former Chick-Fil-A employee Brenda Honeycutt is suing Chick-Fil-A for wrongful termination based on gender discrimination. According to a lawsuit which is circulating today on Twitter, on June 27, 2011, owner and operator of Duluth, GA’s Chick-Fil-A restaurants Jeff Howard terminated Honeycutt, whose employee performance was satisfactory-to-above satisfactory, so that she could be a “stay home mother.”

Honeycutt was terminated by Howard after meetings with restaurant management (during which she was not present), and was replaced by a male employee. The lawsuit cites a pattern of discrimination against female employees, who, after being terminated, were also replaced by male employees in Northern Georgia’s Chick-Fil-A restaurants.

One comment to this article:
Quote:

Not suprised at all. Four female employees terminated by local CfA management solely because they are working mothers, in flagrant violation of the Civil Rights Act. This is a perfect example of what happens when corporate leaders mix their personal religious beliefs with company practices.

A 2007 Forbes profile of founder S. Truett Cathy outlined CfA management's adherence to "biblical principles" in management and operations. They openly admit to screening job applicants for marital status, family relations, and church attendance. While questions about marriage and religious observance are allowed by the federal government, they usually indicate a larger pattern of gender, ethnic, or religious discrimination by the employer. Truett Cathy told Forbes point-blank that he believes married workers are more "industrious" and make better employees. If CfA employees are required to adhere to the Cathys' interpretation of family and biblical principles, where does that leave female, LGBTQ people, non-Christian, and unmarried employees?

Another example:
Quote:

Four women are suing a fast food restaurant in Chula Vista, claiming they were sexually harassed on the job for two years. Chick-Fil-A is known for being a very religious company. Part of their corporate statement reads: "… To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us." The company even closes its restaurants on Sundays

"It's so we can dedicate ourselves to God and to family. So then why are they destroying my family?" said Norma Duarte. Duarte is one of four women who claim the company's religious and family values don't apply to the Chula Vista location.

"Each day it seemed to be getting worse and worse," Duarte said. With her attorney by her side, Duarte explained why she and the three other women filed a lawsuit for an undisclosed amount against a male supervisor and the restaurant's owner. Duarte said one allegation included "the manager putting me in the refrigerator and kissing me and touching me in a sexual manner." Duarte, who worked at the Chula Vista location for seven years, said there are cameras inside the restaurant. However, she said the incidents happened in locations where there were no cameras.

Duarte told 10News the harassment went on for two years and even occurred when customers were in the restaurant. 10News tried to contact Chick-Fil-A's local management and the company's office in Atlanta, but calls were not returned. http://www.10news.com/news/30146182/detail.html

Sometimes it takes issues such as this to bring other things to light.
Quote:

Silly goose. This isn't Sophie's Choice. We can talk about all of these topics. We don't have to pick just one.
That's a typical move of the right these days, especially where Romney's concerned. Talk about ANYTHING they're uncomfortable with, and they try to distract to the usual topics.

Personally, I find them reprehensible, as well as what they support. If the lawsuits are valid, I would like to see them pursued, hope they find for the plaintiffs and cost Chick-fil-a a whole lot of money. Better it goes there than to support Family Research Council, which they no doubt knew and approved of their action in support of a law to kill homosexuals!

Nonetheless, banning them from putting up restaurants, etc., is wrong, period. If people want to go after them for ACTIONS which are discriminatory, go for it. But I do not condone government action.

I don't think that CFA did anything wrong. Maybe a 80 year + old dude said something that the Leftits didn't like, but I don't think the company would stand by it when he's gone.

It's not as if they had an ad on TV that said we'll only Chick-fill-ya if you're not Chock-fulla-cock....

Jeez people.....

Even my local Leftist Agnostic reporter Jerry Davich from the Times said this was all BS in his article "No need to protest here".

...."I also agree that bashing bible believeres is more in vogue than ever in our country, as Worthington asserts, and this agreement comes from a mainstream media, liberal-leaning, agnostic newspaper columnist."

Jerry, we should protest his Merriville store to show that we will not stand for such "bible-based bigotry anymore", on very angry reader told me on Friday.

"No, we should not protest, because we means including me, and I typically protest against public protests of any kind. The issue would have to be something much more meaningful and personal to me. Possibly if my daughter was gay, worked at a Chick-fil-A, and was routinely discriminated against."

"In the big picture, it will take more than a boycott of chicken to compel bible believers to change their stance on gay marriage. I fear it will take a few more generations of debate, discussion and, more importantly, gay marriage before we get there."

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I keep reading about how the support for Chick-fil-A is a free speech issue, and not an expression of a desire to condone the oppression of homosexuals.

Each and every one of these patriotic, free-speech loving Chick-fil-A supporters would have gone out and bought a sandwich if Chick-fil-A had supported the suppression of religious expression.

Because it is free speech that matters to them. Not the message being conveyed.

Pass the artificial sweetener.

Actually, it's only the ACLU (oh, horrors, that obscene word!) that goes out and defends people's right to free speech, whatever the situation. What bastards!

The ACLU has defended the Tea Party, right-wing Christians, the KKK AND currently Chick-fil-a. Makes you wonder why the right hates them so virulently...like maybe they only like defense of THEIR issues? Nah, surely they believe in defending the Constitution, as you said, whatever the issue, right?

So, Obama and Clinton are both full of hate, for stating that marriage should be between a man and a woman?

Staggering at how blind the Left are when they are so blatantly being used by their political leaders, simply to rally up support, when it suits their needs, only to be cast aside, after they're done.

I don't think the religious extremists are any more involved in politics than they ever were. The only organization in the world that remains completely untaxed and is larger and more scary than Catholicism is the Federal Reserve.

No matter what your or my stand on any issues are, we'll never be able to say the same for ourselves.

As for gays themselves, I don't hate. Let them be legally recognized and get the tax breaks, insurance benefits and claims to inheritance that a married couple does. Just don't force any church to recognize it or perform the service.

I don't want to see two dudes kissing on the street and prancing around in pink speedos and playing slap ass, but I don't like being in public and seeing a guy and a girl grope each other either.

I really liked Kwick's Pecard pic too. I almost shot beer out of my nose after seeing it.

There's nothing wrong with that, really, when you think about it Niki. No crux involved. People don't change overnight. Attitudes don't change overnight. I'm sure there are hundreds, perhaps tens of thousands of examples out there over the last 200 years of America where things we take for granted are acceptable were shunned by previous generations. We don't burn "witches" at the stake anymore, for instance, and although I've never seen the "remake" of footloose, I bet it was WAY different than John Lithgow trying to preach to all the kids that dancing was evil. I just assume that because what kid today would even be interested in the movie after 5 minutes if that was what it was about? Don't even get me started on Dirty Dancing. That movie would be laughably lame every step of the way if it were released as is today.

There was talk in Magon's thread about "Ideas". I agree with her about that. An idea needs to be nurtured and shown in a positive way by level headed people and eventually it will be found to be above reproach if enough people back it. Taking a jackhammer to an Idea though and drilling it daily into unwilling minds will only solidify the base of the "other side" and get them to "step up" and start all sorts of fear mongering.

Of course. I forgot that political discourse and democratic processes are dead in this country. Yes, yes, yes, I forgot that it's all about how much money is spent that decides political issues, especially at the local and state level. I forgot that when states decide about gay rights that the consequences of those decisions are often felt at the polls the next election. I forgot that gay people have no way to donate to groups supporting their issues. I also forgot that some state legislatures, being complete pussies and unwilling to take a stand one way or the other, have sent the issue to the voters for a referendum. Of course the money the Cathys and others like them have spent, decided the issues in the voting boot.
/sarcasm

Anthony, your position fails to pass a logical test.

But if you really want to, go ahead and found a competing chicken sandwich chain and donate your millions however pleases you.

I am in favor of government staying the Hell out of people's lives. Be they federal, state government or the county clerk. DOMA is complete BS, if the federal government doesn't issue marriage licenses it has no need to weigh in on marriage. But when the various state legislatures send it to the people and the people vote one way or the other, you have to honor that decision or you throw democracy out the window.

It's still too soon to tell if Washington will become the seventh U.S. state to approve marriage equality, but having the support of the world's largest coffeehouse chain is certainly a good sign.

As numerous media outlets including Towleroad and Queerty are reporting, Starbucks has joined a growing list of major corporations to publicly endorse same-sex marriage legislation in the state. The Seattle Times has published a statement from Kalen Holmes, Executive Vice President of the Seattle-based coffee megabrand, which reads in part:

Starbucks is proud to join other leading Northwest employers in support of Washington State legislation recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples ... This important legislation is aligned with Starbucks business practices and upholds our belief in the equal treatment of partners. It is core to who we are and what we value as a company.
We are deeply dedicated to embracing diversity and treating one another with respect and dignity, and remain committed to providing an inclusive, supportive and safe work environment for all of our partners.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Dear Troll,

Your logic fails the smell test.

It is indeed possible to oppress people through legal means. It is indeed possible to use monetary donations to promote and spread oppression. The vast majority of oppression throughout history was deemed both legal and correct by the oppressors, and sometimes those oppressors were among the majority.

It is the absolute duty of every good citizen to resist such oppression wherever it occurs. Your argument is stunningly illogical. That because people have voted 'aye' for oppression, or because oppression is 'legal', that I should shut up about it or take it lying down.

No, I and others should stand against such oppression and count ourselves proud and right to have done so. That's part of our system, too. Some of our proudest moments in history have occurred because people did not ' honor that decision' and instead raised hell about it.

I have to admit, although I don't think this particularly appropriate, I love the idea.
Quote:

Gay rights activists plan a "kiss day" at Chick-fil-A outlets nationwide Friday amid a controversy over a company official's stance against same-sex marriages.

Organizers used social media to urge same-sex couples to participate in the event and post pictures and videos online.

The latest campaign follows a Wednesday event dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" in which Americans lined up at eateries nationwide to support the company.

I can just imagine the horror it will produce among the "Christian" (I use the term advisedly) crowd. It's a kind of imaginative thing to do, but pretty silly too. I'm not with those who want to go after a company for what their owners believe or who they support. I don't LIKE that they support who they do, or have the narrow-minded views they do, but except for the evidence of discrimination, it's none of my business. If they financially supported something truly despicable, I would feel differently. But it's nit-picking to say they support that Uganda law because they donate to a group who support it, so in my opinion this entire thing isn't worth the fuss.

Individuals can protest in any way they want as long as it doesn't involve violence, in my opinion. I just giggle at the vision this paints in my head.
