New cameras to watch cameras that watch you

PALMER PARK, Md. - Many people find speed cameras frustrating, and some in the region are taking their rage out on the cameras themselves.

But now there's a new solution: cameras to watch the cameras.

One is already in place, and Prince George's County Police Maj. Robert V. Liberati hopes to have up to a dozen more before the end of the year.

Oh I fail to see how this could go badly... *!snark!*

It's worth mentioning that PG County Maryland has one of THE most corrupt police forces in the entire USA, rivalling even Chicagos for abuse and misconduct, so it wasn't JUST to bulk up revenue* but also to keep their abusive, out-of-control officers away from the public before the plethora of legal judgements against them bankrupts the county entire.
Case Example, and by FAR not the only one.
46 Prince George's County officers suspended or on administrative duty
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/28/AR2010
112803410.html

They're also notorious for abusing K-9s, siccing them on downed/compliant suspects and training them to fake "hits" to justify illegal searches.

So while in most cases these cameras are installed soley for the sake of revenue, there was also in a back handed sort of way the less ignoble motivation of removing a venue for the police to commit further abuses, although if your police are so bad you have to do this, why have them ?
Not to mention lets see how long it takes for someone to crosswire porn channels to the things, cause that's always entertaining too.

Makes one wonder if the speed camera watcher cameras are operated by the dept of redundancy dept.

*It's been conclusively proven those cameras actually make intersections less safe, especially when cities start shorting yellow times or using illegally low speed limits to bait and frustrate drivers.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Yep. Now the folks destroying the speed cameras have to find the speeed camera monitoring cameras and destroy them first.

Hope that Optotraffic, the contractor providing the speed cameras (and getting a big cut of the fines), is also paying for the monitoring cameras.

That's why you always destroy the things from cover. Not that I'd ever advocate such behavior, of course.

My solution - I don't speed (in town, at least).

Traffic control cameras ought to have high-powered lasers or missiles built into them so they could zap cars running red lights or stop signs into oblivion. They deserve no better.

Er... Sorry. I was being really contrary for some reason. unicorns seemed funny.

But yeah, this camera thing is dumb, and I fully endorse any cross-wiring scheme with sports or pornography. If the police can't do their jobs competently, buying cameras upon cameras to compensate and entrusting law enforcement and security to modern-day non-AI computers is a load right out of an Asimov story.

Also people speeding, talking on their phones, eating, or being in any other way distracted while driving. Kill 'em all before they kill us all!

Id rather cash-strapped policice departments spend their time with more important crime. If people running red lights can be curtailed by a cheaper automated system that frees up bodies for more important work - Im all for it.

Then I don't see a problem.

Having had a friend killed by someone running a red light, Im not too concerned with preserving people's "freedom" to endanger others so they can get somewhere 30 seconds faster.

Thing is, red-light cameras don't curtail much of anything, and have been shown in several studies to INCREASE accident rates at intersections where they're installed. So they're a revenue stream for the city and the private companies that operate them, but they don't really do anything at all about "crime", except possibly increase it.

I had not heard that, but I just did some checking into. Yes, it does seem to increase the number of accidents in some locals, but in others it does not, and has decreased the number of violation. In other areas, it's a wash.

I do note that in those areas where accidents increased, they were specified as rear-end collisions - which are rarely fatal. So, Im wondering (Im sure it would take a lot more digging to answer this) are there more frequent accidents, but less frequent fatalities?

It's not just the cameras - it's how cities cast safety by the wayside in favor of revenue, even as they lie through their teeth about it.

Many speed limits set too low
http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20100427/METRO05/4270380/1016/Many-
speed-limits-set-too-low

Quote:

One likely reason, said Megge, whose section advises communities on how to set proper speed limits, is that communities want speeding ticket revenue, and failing to conduct the required speed studies allows them to keep enforcing their speed limits that Megge calls "artificially low."

"I think money is part of it, and I find it reprehensible that communities aren't following the law," Megge said. "In many cases, the problem is the speed limit, not the motorist. Communities have to obey the law, too."
...
Sterling Heights spokesman Steve Guitar admitted the gesture was largely symbolic, since the speed limit increase was required by law.

"They know it's the law," Guitar said. "They just wanted to go on record to say they were concerned." He said the apprehension about the increase was over safety, not the potential loss of revenue because the number of speeding tickets issued by police might drop.

However, Ferndale Police Chief Michael Kitchen admitted revenue was the reason behind his recent decision to step up traffic enforcement.

"We have to write more tickets in order to avoid layoffs," Kitchen said. "I don't like how this looks to the public at all, but the bottom line is: If you obey the speed limit, we won't give you a ticket."

Kitchen admitted that the 35-mph speed limit on the most heavily-driven roadway in Ferndale -- Woodward Avenue near Nine Mile -- is likely too low.

"That speed limit would probably be 45 mph if they ever did a speed study," said Kitchen, adding that Woodward falls under MDOT's jurisdiction.

YEARS later, they still have not complied.
Ann Arbor needs to get up to speed on its speed limits along main roads
http://www.annarbor.com/news/opinion/ann-arbor-needs-to-get-up-to-spee

Quote:

These ultra low posted limits do not enhance safety, but they satisfy residents who do not understand that posted limits have almost nothing to do with safety or actual travel speeds, particularly at the upper end of the travel speeds scale. City officials do not explain to residents that raising or lowering posted speed limits by up to 15 mph will change 85th percentile speeds by not more than 3 mph, and usually by 1 mph or less. The only change is the speed at which tickets can be given, and most speeding tickets go to safe drivers at normal speeds when posted limits are set too low.

As one example, the City Council strongly objected when the State Police and MDOT corrected the speed limits on two segments of Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route I-94) in April 2008, from the former 30 and 35 mph to the current 40 and 45 mph to match actual and safe 85th percentile traffic speeds. The 85th percentile travel speeds remained unchanged (plus or minus 1 mph). The only thing that changed is these segments are no longer the speed traps they were before April 2008, when the former limits arbitrarily defined about 90 percent of drivers as violators.

And then when caught out, one local township decides to "cheat" by CAUSING congestion and screwing safety to the wind by cutting down the amount of lanes amd throwing bicycles into the mix, yeah that's freakin brilliant, cram more cars and increasingly frustrated drivers into an even SMALLER area, yeah that ain't gonna cause wrecks and road rage, of course not.
Ypsilanti considers reducing lanes on city streets to keep speed limits lower

And then there's Yellow-Shorting.

Cities Shortening Yellow Traffic Lights for Deadly Profit

6 Cities That Were Caught Shortening Yellow Light Times For Profit
http://blog.motorists.org/6-cities-that-were-caught-shortening-yellow-

/

Chicago in particular is quite nasty and blatant about it, although the worst I ever saw was in Maryland at the intersection of Furnace Branch Rd and Gov Ritchie Hwy Rte2, the Furnace Branch cross, despite heavy traffic, would remain green for only 2.8 seconds and the yellow was 1.2 seconds long.
Crain Highway and Rte648 was another one, and one of the most dangerous intersections in the country, Gov Ritchie Hwy Rte2 and Ordinance Rd Rte710 was even worse, mind you these are all within a few miles of each other and just down the way from the site of my near fatal accident, to which one might also attribute some fault to a very short yellow when it SHOULD have been a six way light...

And yanno, I always wonder just how many people die each year cause they're busy looking at the speedometer instead of the road - plus consider that if safety was the real intent they would put the cruisers somewhere visible instead of hiding them.
Safety doesn't enter it, has jack shit to *DO* with traffic enforcement, and revenue does.
