Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Romney's gaffe vs. Obama's 'clinging to guns and religion' line: this article argues that the messages were completely different:

Quote:

Obama’s obvious, innate condescension aside, his point is that he wanted to be the president of every American. Hey, we can still win these people over. He didn’t categorize 47 percent of Americans as freeloading leeches who can be written off as Democratic Teetsuckers; he specifically said “our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress.”

and

Quote:

Mitt Romney thinks it’s his job not to worry about these people (or at least, that’s what he tells rich Republicans). Barack Obama think it’s his job to tell gun nuts and Bible thumpers that despite their misguided views, he still wants to lead them (or at least, that’s what he tells rich Democrats).

Yup, Obama said he still had to go after those votes, because he wanted to be the President of ALL Americans.

Romney says it's his job not to worry about "those people", implying he has no desire to be their President.

I note for the record that in today's polls Obama has 47%.

Romney says that 47% of the people are going to vote for Obama no matter what, so he's going to not worry about them and focus on the 5-6% of people who are undecided. I'm not sure why you think this is wrong.

Unless you think he means that he plans to focus on the 5-6% superwealthy. So you think it's his plan to ignore people whose vote he can't get in favor of people whose vote he can't lose...sure, that's his campaign strategy.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

B/c you are not giving him 'credit' for ALL he said: There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are DEPENDENT UPON GOVERNMENT, who BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE VICTIMS, who BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TO CARE FOR THEM, who BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE ENTITLED to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. These are people who pay no income tax. ... [M]y job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them THEY SHOULD TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and care for their lives.

I wouldn't count on it. Mitt says they're not important to him.

He also says he doesn't care about anyone who isn't paying income taxes, which is pretty funny given his own tax problems. Around two-thirds of corporations in this country don't pay any corporate taxes, so Romney isn't interested in them; they are, after all, people, my friends! A good number of Romney's 47% are elderly, who worked all their life and are now retired and collecting Social Security - which they paid into for their whole working life; Romney says he doesn't care about them, either.

We already know he doesn't care about students, because if they really need money they can just go borrow from their rich parents (after all, the middle class is those who earn $200,000 - $250,000, he said). And he's never cared about the very poor; he's been pretty clear about that. He's doing horribly with Hispanic voters and blacks, he's tanking with women, so I guess he figured he'd double down and just go ahead and try to alienate veterans, military personnel, seniors, students, and even Jewish voters.

He's really batting for the cycle this week!

So, Obama openly insults these folks, and you're trying to push the idea that he's really caring for them? These 'bitter clingers' are just simpletons, too stupid to know what's good for them anyway ?

Yeah, that figures to be the sort of spin from folks who'd think, when Obama says " You didn't built that ! " , he was actually talking about roads and bridges, and not small businesses.

And Romney, he is clearly talking about getting their VOTES, not dismissing them as being their President. It's pretty clear, that he's talking bout folks who pay no taxes, and have been conditioned to think that the govt is here just to give them stuff. Sadly, he's absolutely right about that, and he's just stating a fact.

So the 95 year-old woman who worked her whole life and is now collecting Social Security and Medicare that she paid for? Freeloader who just wants free stuff, according to Rappy and Romney. Disabled war vet? Moocher just looking for a handout, claiming to be some kind of victim.

If Obama had a lock on all the votes of the poorest 47% of Americans, Romney would have no chance in hell. But because poor conservatives routinely vote against their economic interests, we are obliged to listen to Romney dig himself deeper and deeper into political obsolesence.

Now, my conservative friends know what it was like when we on the left had nothing but John Kerry to stem the tide of Republican domination. Good times.

Eight of the top ten states where the most people pay no federal income tax are RED STATES. Seems calling them lazy moochers is a shabby way to ask for their votes.

If Romney keeps imploding, he may well lose the election. By about forty-seven percent. [/snark]

Hey there guys,

Let me take a crack at it.

In his "speech" Romney does eventually say that he's going after those undecided, undeclared independent voters that make up about 5-6% of the country (his numbers). On that we are clear. Now, had he left it there - no problem. But he gets Foot-in-mouth disease and says what he says about the 47% of Americans - you know, those pesky freeloaders who don't pay taxes, who by the way, a great many are from the Greatest Generation - those folks who both he and his father owe their cushy lives to - the folks who fought the greatest menace, The Nazis. Those are part of the 47%.

Also too, families who actually work for a living, but who rightfully and lawfully pay no taxes because of the way the Tax code is written. A fellow once told me that we should pay our fair share in taxes, but that we should take advantage of every allowable tax break/credit. So, a family of five making $50K a year would pay no tax, if they take advantage of all the tax breaks, etc. Sorry Mitt, these guys have jobs - whoooops!!! you just insulted hard working Americans (both Dems and Repubs) that are NOT holding out their hands to the Government. There goes that theory. Say bye-bye to those votes. Then there's the elderly, who don't pay income tax on there social security checks. Bye-bye!!!
Then there's students - Bye-bye!!! And so on. Oh, it gets better.

Then he says if he were latino, well, that in itself is an insult. Here's a man who has millions, no hundreds of millions in several off-shore accounts and he's crying - boo hoo, I can't catch a break, if only my skin were brown, boo hoo! Believe me Mitt, we don't want you. You're a sorry excuse of a human being. What a racist! To be clear, he's saying that latinos get all the breaks in this country - REALLY!!! News to me. But what's really happening is that this country is becoming more of a melting pot every day, and he's scared shitless. He doesn't have a clue how to conduct himself humanwise. He even insulted his own wife - what a douche! And this is the best you got!? McCain at least served his country. All Romney does is milk people, and this country, dry.

Let's talk handouts. Romneycare in Mass - first, he reached across the aisle and was endorsed by the Kennedys regarding the Health Reform law. But how was it financed? Good question! By the Federal government, that's how...............

"Massachusetts got the federal government to pick up the lion's share of the cost. MA health reform would have been impossible without the Administration of President George W. Bush playing Sugar Daddy."

http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/health/health_stew/2012/08/romneycare_
vs_obamacare_which.html

Wait a sec! Isn't he running his campaign on the premise that government is too darn big, freeloaders, entitled to handouts, etc. Doesn't that fly in the face of his criticism of Obama and Dems spending too much and adding to the national debt? Hmmmmmm..........it makes you think, don't it? Could someone explain to me what has changed between now and 2006 when he championed Health Reform in his state? Why is he so dead-set against the Affordable Care Act? By the way, the article posted above is interesting and gives a good overall briefing on the 2 health care reform.

P.S. Romney must be in excellent shape these days, because he's sure doing an awful lot of back pedaling.......

I think he's trying to say that voters would really flock to him as a presidential candidate if he looked more latino, or if he were Hispanic. What I love about this whole thing is the unstated assumption by Romney -- and of the Right Wing blogger who pulled the quoted "47 Percent" figure more or less out of his ass in the first place -- that "Does not owe Federal tax" is the same as "Is a welfare queen." That "Earns too little to owe Income Tax" or "Belongs to an exempted group" (such as any member of our armed forces serving in a combat zone), is semantically identical to "Parasite on Real Americans".

My son, a good family man, who used to work in construction until the economy tanked, recently managed to get a job working for a local charity after some years on various forms of relief -- it's hard, low-paying work, and it's damned hard to make ends meet. Harder than it was when he was on the dole. But he's still slogging out there, every week. And I'm damned proud of him.

And if Mr. Romney wants to imply that my son is less of an American than his $50,000-a-plate buddies, he knows what he can kiss, and when.

Maybe this is why SNL never called me back......chortled, snort........ha ha.

Seriously, too many people of color were reaching the American dream. Romney and his $50K a plate buddies want to be the only ones to play with their toys. Once Obama wedged his way to the top (despite furious attempts to derail his journey), the elite class went to DefCon 4. He cannot keep up with his lies. Seriously, he needs a new type of bike - the faster he pedals forward, the faster he goes backwards.

All well said, RJ - I am highlighting this quote cause as an Anarchist I take some level of crap for supposedly "endorsing the system", although my use of a vote is as a form of condemnation rather than support, as expressed above, in combination with the desperation measure of incidently putting less competent (and therefore less dangerous to me) morons at the levers that control the world, or that people THINK, often BELIEVE, control the world, rather...

It isn't even that I think it'll make that much difference, so much as I want my voice heard, even if faintly, even if ignored, I feel a moral imperative to offer warning *before* escalating to less pleasant measures, even if that warning goes unnoticed.

For mine own conscience, such as it is, you understand ?

More gold from Romney. The hits just keep coming.

The hilarious irony is that he was the one who demanded that the whole tape be released, so that people could hear him in context.

Quote:

And-- and then they got together as a family and said, "You know, to be successful in America you've gotta get an education." And they couldn't afford an education. And the kids and the parents said, "You know, if we all work and we all save we could afford to send one of us to college." And they-- they sent my wife's dad. Can you imagine working every day, taking a couple of jobs and saving your money so that your brother could go to-- I mean I would never do that for my brother.

This is what Romney thinks of family: "Can you imagine working every day, taking a couple of jobs and saving your money so that your brother could go to-- I mean I would never do that for my brother."

Yup, heard that one too, and more. They're leaking it a bit at a time, and I'm having a BALL listening. I bet candidates from here on will be VERY careful what they say, and/or screen EVERYONE who comes in for any item that could possibly take a video!

I'm with whoever guessed it was a worker who recorded it. Placement (not among the audience, but on a table behind them), and what some of the idjits Romney was talking to said/asked, pretty much clinches it. None of THEM would be caught dead recording his remarks, or theirs.

One thing that's slipped by is that working people generally pay 13% in payroll taxes--LESS THAN ROMNEY PAID, at least in the tax returns he's willing to let us see. Just amusing, nothing more. As is the fact that a video of his mother has been released saying George Sr. was on welfare after he "immigrated" back to the U.S. I guess that makes Romney one of "us", eh?

I'm certainly offended that my having paid into SSI and Medicare all my working life and now getting it (well, some of it--my husband still works (at 74) so we can keep our private health insurance, so Medicare only pays what's left over after that).

I see, in their desperation, the Romney campaign has now released a video of Obama saying he's in favor of redistribution. Go, guys, your actions only scream to the world how desperate you are!

Me, I'm just smiling at the fact that Obama leads in all but one of the swing states currently. Certainly anything can still happen, no question about that. But I pay NO attention whatsoever to polls on the whole country--they are totally meaningless as long as we have the electoral college. It's the swing states who decide the election ( ), so those are the only ones I pay attention to. And they ain't lookin' good for the guy...

No surprise there, Mike. Bear in mind that their "first priority" has been to defeat Obama all along; to hell with what might be good for the country or help our first responders or our military or anyone ELSE, their "job" is to defeat EVERYTHING.

Another thing that's been missed in all this is Romney's mentality: If I don't do something for you, you won't support me". He seems to have no concept whatsoever that people might vote for him even if he doesn't "offer" tax breaks (which he's actually only offering the rich). He apparently believes that the ONLY thing that will decide people to vote for him is if he GIVES them something. It's a perfect example of a BUSINESSMAN's mentality, and probably works quite well in business. But as President?

I'm actually surprised the pundits haven't picked up on that, it's so obvious. His thinking is: The government gives them something for nothing, they don't pay taxes, so my offering a tax break means, since they don't PAY taxes, it won't get them to vote for me. Wow. Leaves out every other reason anyone might choose to vote for him. What a mentality!

Just a little reality check: I don't expect every politician to be as utterly two-faced as Mitt Romney. The sheer audacity of his classist, racist, callous-as-all-get-out rant here is not something I expect we would soon see from any other candidate even without this coming to light. Y'know, and yeah, the motherfucker ASKED that the full video be released! Dubya wasn't nearly as smart as this prick and we heard closed-door speeches from him and they weren't anywhere near this calibre of twisted and wrong. You don't have to be all that careful if you're not an absolute pathological liar like ol' Mitt.

Some of us have well known from the get that Mitt Romney is a whole new level of corrupt. And on the most personal level. What's great is now everyone can hear it for themselves from the horse's mouth. This guy's political career is over.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

"This guy's political career is over." Gawd, I hope you're right, Cav, but given that there are many who are DEFENDING him, as well as telling him to run with it, I'll hold my hopes close to my vest for now.

But yes, you're absolutely right, come to think of it. While candidates may say undipolmatic things in private and to raise funds, I don't think we'd find QUITE such the openly-disgusting things from most of them if their private conversations were revealed. About some Republicans recently, I wouldn't be so sure, tho'...their hatred is pretty solidified.

Not only Romney, but his attendees showed a level of mind-numbing idiocy that's hard to swallow. Daily Kos and others had some fun comments to make:
Quote:

Romney: "This president talks loudly and carries a tiny stick"

Hmmm...there's probably some projection involved here. ;-)

"You should be so proud of your wealth! Stick up for it!" (Unidentified attendee)

"I wanna see you take your gloves off and speak to people who actually read a paper or read a book." (unidentified attendee)

Romney responds by hawking his book and website.

"Holder most corrupt AG in American history." (Unidentified attendee) The attendee went on to advise Mr. Romney to target two regulatory agencies, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Hmmm, I seem to remember John Mitchell, the first ever extremely corrupt Attorney General convicted of a crime, then Nixon's 2nd AG was convicted of a crime and both were Republicans... Holder, on the other hand, has never been convicted of anything.

In his reply, Mr. Romney said: “I wish we weren’t unionized so we could go a lot deeper than you’re actually allowed to go.” He did not take issue with the characterization of Mr. Holder.

Romney: "I have been on The View twice now! But The View is high risk because only one of the 5 women on the show are conservative."

Sooo.... how you gonna deal with Putin then? Dealing with him is risky also.

Seems to me those he was talking to are of precisely the same mentality as Romney, which says a lot...

If people hear the entire tape, it's not going to look that good for Romney's entire class, much less Romney himself.

By the way, appropos of Romney's statements about the "47%", 7,000 millionaires were among those who paid no income tax.
Quote:

Romney's 'Makers' Take Lion’s Share of Tax Breaks

The top 1 percent of filers earning over $400,000 raked in 23.9 percent or about $258 billion in reduced taxes through deductions and exclusions. The top 10 percent of filers took in 40.3 percent, or more than $435 billion.

On the other hand, the bottom 60 percent of tax filers, which includes more than 99 percent of the people who paid no income tax last year (the non-paying group also included 7,000 millionaires), grabbed just 20.1 percent of the tax reductions from deductions and exclusions. That was worth $217 billion or half of what was claimed by far fewer top earners in the U.S.

“If you counted tax expenditures as a form of spending, then the rich would be paying a lot more in taxes,” said Eric Toder, a fellow at the Urban Institute and co-author of a study on the distribution of tax expenditures.

Two factors drive the skewing of tax expenditures toward the well-off. First, the more money you make, the more likely you are to engage in activities the tax code favors, whether it is saving for retirement, purchasing expensive homes with larger mortgages or giving to a favored charity.

Second, people in high income tax brackets get a higher percentage of their deductions returned in the form of lower taxes. A dollar given to charity by someone in the 35 percent tax bracket reduces federal taxes on that income by 35 cents, while a dollar given to charity by someone in the 10 percent tax bracket only reduces their taxes by a dime.

Some tax-favored activities are almost entirely the province of the well-to-do. For instance, the capital gains and dividends exclusion – it is taxed at a flat 15 percent rate instead of normal rates – reduced taxes by $77.7 billion in 2011. Fully three-quarters of that tax break went to filers in the top 1 percent of the income distribution. The bottom 60 percent of the population received just 1.1 percent of its benefits.

Romney, who includes himself among the makers, is a major beneficiary of this special treatment in the tax code. It was among the many tax breaks that allowed him to pay an effective tax rate of 13.9 percent in 2010, far below the statutory 35 percent that would normally be applied to his $21.6 million in income. http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2012/09/18/Makers-Take-Lions-Sh
