I'm sorry that your kitty passed away, that can be really hard and I know you'll miss her and her fellow kitties in your house will miss her too. I know this doesn't make up for anything, but 14 years is a good life for a cat and I bet she was the luckiest kitty in the verse since you took good care of and treasured her.

Not KALLISTA!?! Oh, shit, I'm so sorry Frem! I know how much you cared about her. They just don't live long enough, dammit. I long ago accepted that the pain of losing them is worth the joy of having them, but that doesn't make the pain any less. That song made me cry, remembering so many little lost souls and how many good people suffer like you are.

She looks EXACTLY like our Zuli (so named after Rich Avanzuli, at that time head of the SF SPCA and innovator of many wonderful programs to allow people to keep their pets in apartments, old age, etc.--in other words, my hero). Of course, who HASN'T known a black cat, they're so common. But he was a very special cat to me in particular, so I empathize with your pain. All I can say is what I say to everyone in your situation: "May the pain of loss pass and the good memories be what stays with you". After all these years, it's finally happened for me; I remember Zuli and the good memories, I can't even remember his old age and how he died. May it be the same for you. Zuli died in Autumn, too.

Shared pain can't lessen the pain, but it can make us feel less alone in our grief. We share your pain.

I hope it doesn't make you hurt more, Frem, but you wrote me about Kallista once, and I wanted to share this so people here could kind of "meet" her a bit:
Quote:

Then there's Kallista-Ree Sjare Khallinenda, my cat, also a black shorthair, who we rescued more or less by force, I've mentioned that tale a time or two, and she spent the first three months of her life with me almost exclusively in my lap or wound up in my Mk65 field jacket liner, which any time I am not wearing, I'll leave somewhere convenient for her to ball herself up in it, but she never loves it quite as much as when I've just taken it off, still warm with all my scent marks fresh on it.

She's the kitty godfather, too - when I went back and collected her from my former ex, who did not take care of her, she was sick, malnourished and fleabitten, and still from the moment she was carried in the door there was NO doubt who was in charge, cause SHE is the Princess, and damn well knows it - and it's usually her that comes up with whatever nefarious plan the rest of em are trying to carry out, usually badly.

Kallista is also the mystic one, with strange and inexplicable talents, enough of which have been witnessed by others to make em look at her a little funny - the wackiest of which was coming back from NY and leaving her in the car while we took a quick bathroom break... and upon our return she's in the passenger seat, unlocks the power doors and starts rolling the window down as we approach - the cat carrier, still locked, empty in the back seat - or the time we came home to paw prints on the CEILING, or how she can sideslip doors, although with the french lever doors I finally caught her doing a jump-grab-swing thing to open em, still doesn't explain how she can bypass a LOCKED door though.

And finally, she has a bit of a potty-mouth, displease her and she will let you know, you can actually hear multiple syllables in there, and while you might not understand the "words", the context is generally immediately clear, as is the profane nature of such utterances - in the words of Pat "Did your cat just cuss me out?!"

Thanks folks, It's been a harsh blow to me, this has.

As per our custody agreement and my lease allowing for two cats, Miss Molly Meerkat has been put in my care, she's still adjusting but not minutes ago she was surveying all the kitty toys and furniture with this "Oh, cool", kind of expression - she's a very dark tortiseshell calico whom I rescued from deaths very doorstep thanks to a neglectful and abusive former owner, and she's a very happy little kitty in demeanor.

She won't fill the gap in my heart Kallista leaves, but when it comes to felidae I have a lot of room in there, especially given my usual regard for humans...

I'll miss her, but she got 14 spoiled rotten years, which is a pretty good run for a kitty, and no doubt her soul will pass on to a new life somewhere, hopefully as enjoyable as the last.
And yes, due to her fondness for it, I used my Mk65 field jacket liner as her shroud and blanket, because of all the things she liked, that was her very favorite and I couldn't bear to send her on without it.

Oh indeed.

I'm pretty sure that when cats "die" their soul returns to this ephemeral big yarn-shaped ball of warmth and comfort where it mingles with the soul core of the feline species (what more conventional theology would call Bastet) and is eventually recycled into a newborn kitten somewhere, because I've met too many cats who have "known" things they logically shouldn't to believe otherwise.

Of course, I suspect there's a picture of me with the words EASY MARK hanging around in there too, cause they KNOW, they ALL know!

And boy howdy do most of them run with it, too.

Thanks...

She did have her "last dance", and I tried to keep her as happy as possible, as her issues got worse we went from tuna to shredded fish cat food and finally to minced fish pate, but it had reached a point where she couldn't even eat that and she spent most of the last days curled up unmoving in her favorite comfy spots.

Because she was so emphatically an indoor cat, and was totally traumatized by even the short car trip to be examined by the vet some time ago, I bribed said vet to make a house call to deliver final mercies, but he kind of bailed on me with little notice so I made arrangements with another and held off to the very last, but hell if I was going to prolong her suffering when it got that bad.

She went at home, quite happy as she got to "steal" some of my breakfast just before that, and I shelled out for some really good drugs right up front, so she slowly slipped away curled up in my lap purring away with a very satisfied little cat smile, it was all she could have wanted.

Kallista was the selfish one, and she got her own rite and spot, but Puppy was of a more selfless and industrious bent, her remains will be cremated and then the ashes used to fertilize a bed of roses for people to enjoy, she would have liked that, I think.

Soon enough Miss-Molly-Meerkat will be moving in, because this place seems so cold, so empty, without a kitty around, but for right now I am dealing with the inevitable emotional meltdown every time I look around, since there's more kitty furniture here than mine, and of course cat toys scattered around, and her beloved half-mauled scratching post, which I ain't throwing out, even though I probably should since Molly won't need it.

OONJERAH

Babycat was born about 9 Sept 1994. She would have been 18 now. I had her put to sleep
the end of June. She wasn't the sweetest pet, but the best loved by me in this lifetime.

She was maybe 8 days old when I got her, eyes not yet open. I had to become a Mama cat
and raise her on a bottle. It was cold that September; I had to keep her warm all the
time, warm on me. I made some mistakes in her care, yet somehow, they weren't fatal.
And I knew it was because I saved her life that I loved her so much.

My other cats also looked after her, especially Bigfoot who was 3 or 4 months older.
(Yes, I named him Bigfoot 'cause he was half-again as big as his litter mates. He grew
up to be a mighty hunter. Very bright.)

When Babycat was 3 or 4 weeks old, my daughter brought a friend over to see the kitten.
The friend wanted to adopt her, but I could not part with her. Pick one of the other cats,
I offered. No, she didn't want another.

When she was 5-7 weeks old, I kept trying to get her to eat solid food. I really wanted
to wean her as the late night feedings were wearing me down. She didn't like what was
offered: kibble, canned cat food, canned people food (tuna?), hamburger raw or cooked,
chicken, etc. I was at my wit's end. At the time, I didn't know a trick: put the offered
food in my mouth, roll it around & get all saliva-ed. She often liked what I was eating
... chewed up almonds, for instance.

I must have been having one of my treats: California Hass avacado stuffed with shrimp
meat. Naturally, I offered her some shrimp. She leapt upon it, devoured it as if to say,
"Why didn't you give me this before? What kinda Mom are you?!" So she ate shrimp all
her life, though in time, she was willing to eat other foods, even cat kibble.

So now my Baby is gone. I was raised to be a wooden Indian: Emotion is wrong & bad;
do not display emotions; do not even feel them.
So how can I cry and grieve? Once
again, I do it with music. Go out to YouTube and listen to something sad, sentimental ...
like the Rainbow Bridge song. Or read the poem. Only then can I bawl my head off.

True love is worth the price.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Frem: Get a cat. Or two. As soon as possible. I guarantee it will distract you from those constant reminders more than being alone. A kitten if possible; nobody can be sad with the madness of a kitten around!

We've lost eight; each one so special in their own ways, it was hard to ever have a favorite. Each one hurt like hell to lose. But not being a cat person, it was the dogs which really tore me up. And like you, I was lucky enough to have a good, very-long-time vet come and put Kiya down in the Outback with me, which place she loved more than any other. I was also lucky to have "my" first dog put down up at Marine Mammal Center in our VW van, where she felt safe and happy. I wish everyone could be so lucky (or so determined, as in your case); it always seemed to me the most awful thing to have to take a pet to the vet (NO animal likes going to the vet) to be put down, it broke my heart and made me feel guilty for a long time afterwards the times we had to. So double good on you.

I really mean it about getting another. Have a very-long-time friend up in Washington who adored golden retrievers; his on-line tag is "ToBeGolden", which says it all. Rick lost his last golden and was saying on line that he wasn't going to get another for a while. Everyone on the forum pushed him--I mean PUSHED him--until he got another. He adored Peanut from the start (I called her the PMPeanut, "permanently manic", because she was...the minute you entered the house she was all over you--never met a more energetically HAPPY dog!). He just lost her recently and is going through it all over again, but both he Arlene, his wife, are elderly now and have many physical problems, so they can't get another. That is my BIGGEST fear in life; to get so old and infirm as to not be able to have a dog. I long ago determined that if I outlive Jim before Koch and Tash are gone, I will stick around only long enough to see them through, then I'm outta here. The thought of being in some "home" without a dog to love and be loved by is more than I can bear.

The joy they bring is worth every second of the pain of losing them, but knowing that doesn't make the pain one whit less. Get a cat. Now. The meltdown isn't good for you, and a new kitty to pay attention to WILL help. Don't wait.

Oh hell, Niki - cats we got...

One of my neighbors mutts decided to share its fleas a while back, after Kallista passed on and I had brought Molly over, and because of her sensitivity to chems and her rather hysteric overreaction we moved her back over there so she could be isolated/quarantined and properly flea dipped cause this is a small office/apartment and they got a 5BR house.

There's still Ghoster and Squirmy and Molly and Lexi - although Lexi cannot be seperated from my ex cause she's brain damaged and never came out of kitten-cling mode, and "impressed" on my ex instead of her mother, Lexi's still kinda sweet even with all her jealousy issues.

Can't move Squirmy neither, even attempting to sent her into total epic grade freakout, and that means Ghoster stays put too since they're playmates, Ghoster being enterally kitten playful and Squirmy being a font of boundless energy...
Lexi ain't playful, and Molly finds them obnoxious.

So Molly will be moving back in here, but first I wanted to clean the place thoroughly (so much easier without a cat underfoot, I admit) and have the washer/dryer serviced before doing so, but if it takes too long imma just go fetch her anyways - I need a kitty around, for proper villain cred if nothing else.

And Villainsource wants too much.

I lost a second over the years, but I've got two now who have me well trained to care for their needs. They're so cool. I can't imagine life without felines around.
