Keep the Shiny side up

I've noted before the problem of living in a 'battleground' state during a Presidential election, but the ante of attack ads has now been doubled down, and mostly for stuff I can't even vote on.

Aside from the Obama/Romney ads, we also have the Allen/Kaine Senatorial campaign for Virginia. These two races are about half the commercials on during local news and evening network broadcasts.

In addition, we've been getting the Maryland Question 7 casino referendum ads for the last month. MGM and Gaylord Resorts want to build a casino complex in Prince Geroge county, right next to Washington D.C., and Penn Casinos is trying to stop them so they don't lose business at their Charles Town WV casino. The PACs for both sides have spent over $37 million on ads in the region so far, and have almost a month to go.

New in the last couple of weeks are commercials supporting or opposing Question 6, a Maryland referendum to repeal the state's pro-same-sex marriage law.

All in all, seems like 2/3 of all ads are political right now.

I'm actually wondering if retail sales in the D.C. region are going to go down because merchants can't get advertising space on radio and TV.

Sounds like you're against free speech.

Would laugh at that, except for what you're going through. I feel your pain; I don't know what I'd do if that were happening here. Probably, to avoid throwing something at the TV and damaging it, just stop watching TV! Otherwise, it would drive me insane.

Hang in there; only a couple of weeks to survive it, and it'll al go away--think of how nice that will feel! Well, if you actually prefer ads for cars, booze, cialis, etc. ;o)

Hey, that kinda says something. Those are the most common ads we have here, so I guess the demographic likes cars, booze and sex, eh?

Nothing. Just continue to strive toward becoming a fraction as trollish as you, the king.

I think you have that flipped. See, a Troll offers nothing substantive to a discussion. Kwick supplies actual information all the time. You, on the other hand, almost never do.

I know, I know, reality and it's librul bias...

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

I defer to your MUCH greater knowledge about trolling. I mean if anyone knows about trolls, it's got to be you.

Solution: Turn off TV.. . . Get news, shows, entertainment elsewhere ('Net).
Then write to the networks/cable & say you won't be watching til after the election.

Or just record things on DVR and then fast-forward through the garbage. Cuts down on the noise-to-signal ratio quite a bit that way.

Yes, Story has had to deal with his share of trolls here. You, Rappy, Geezer, Wulfie, "Hero"... all right-wing trolls. He's become somewhat of an expert on dealing with trolls.

Our solution is to be quick on the MUTE button and have something handy we can read in short segments. Madame Geezer has finished War and Peace and Vanity Fair so far.

Yeah, turning off the TV is the best idea, if you don't have to spend as much time in a recliner as I do. I usually have two stations going at one time, two TV series, one and news, etc. When commercials hit, I switch stations...and am usually pissed off when their commercial time coincides, so I find a different one. Or else go do something until they're over; as I listen on a headset, I never have to worry about when to get back, with the volume turned down to minimal, I know when the show comes back on. I cannot take political commercials of ANY kind, from either side they piss me off because they're usually spin or lies.

Most of the time now, tho', I watch my shows On Demand, which lets me zip past them when they're first there, then omits them completely after a week or so. I'm reeeel close to getting Roku, as Jim has, so I NEVER have to deal with them!

Roku is okay, but it's got its limitations. Fine for movies - Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, and others - but a bit iffy for TV shows. Many of them are there, either on Netflix or Amazon, but many of them aren't free, either, even with Amazon Prime membership.

We've been using the Roku and Amazon Prime to watch old classics - Network, The Great Gatsby (looking forward to the Leo DiCaprio version coming out next year, although I wish they'd used Brad Pitt as Gatsby, because he looks so much like a young Redford...), Chinatown, and others - so we escape a lot of commercials. In reality, between the DVR, Amazon, and others, I really don't see a commercial unless I want to. I rarely watch TV in "real time" anymore - I record anything I might be interested in and watch it delayed, even if only by a twenty minutes or so, so I can zip through commercials. I usually watch yesterday's shows tonight, but I did watch the debates in real time, double-screening 'em (watching debates on TV and watching media streams and tracking info online with the laptop).

That's weird...Jim swears by Roku, and usually has about ten TV shows "up" on Roku at any given time, picking and choosing which episode of which one to watch. I know there's a couple he's said he couldn't get there, but he never watches movies any longer (says two hours is too long to sit through anything!), only series. And would DIE rather than pay for any individual thing! Different providers for Roku or something?

Quite possible; have you got Netflix or Hulu? I don't. They have lots of TV shows there.

At some point, I expect HBO to ditch the cable-only subscriber model (they already may have in other areas, but not here), whereby you have to subscribe to cable or another provider (Dish, DirecTV, AT&T U-verse, etc.) to get HBO. I expect they'll start offering it a la carte on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or just on its own via streaming.

It's really one of the only reasons I even have cable anymore.
