Lastly, I agree with Mike: "If I have to waste time trying to decipher (someone's) phonetic spelling and mangling of the language, then I'm not likely to bother." I haven't bothered with several of his threads because of this. And I suppose a lot of my feeling about this is based on " Use your words; it's all we have between us, our only form of communication." It's hard enough to communicate perfectly over the internet (or otherwise); why make it harder?

Out of curiosity, what is the language Mal4 and others are using?

Well total strangers should not come here and post in moronic ways. If someone wants to purposely mangle language and don't what to hear anything negative about it they can go elsewhere.

Byte - did that stuff you posted actually have meaning? I thought you were totally making it up, so I posted nonsense back so we could have a nonsense conversation. Too funny that there might be actual meaning in what you posted! Look kinda like Perl regular expressions to me.

Regarding the newcomer's spelling: I chat here when it's fun, and sorting out mumbo jumbo isn't fun. I think anyone who posts like that when no one else does is rather lazy and self-centered. This schmoe, kid or not, thinks that strangers have nothing else to do but sort out his/her bizarre language. Hey, it's fun with friends, but introducing yourself to a new group this way is just asking to be ignored. I will oblige.

Sorry, newbie. You seem a decent chap/chappette, but the teacher in me wants you to learn something about how you ought to present yourself to new folks.

It's the reason I demand that my science students learn to express themselves, both with math and actual written English. Solving tough problems is nice, but if you can't explain your work you'll get no where.

Niki - so maybe it's with lame posters on Huff and such that I've built up my need to preach. Glad we agree.

Or go overseas and just yell at people in English, and keep yelling louder and louder, and then wonder why they won't understand us.

Next time I'm in Brazil I'll be sure the tell them all how stupid their language is, then just make up my own and call them ignorant for not figuring it out.

Actually, he can post in proper English. I think he does it to make a point, and he's got a brass set for even trying these days. Trying to make people think diffrently now is rediculously hard.

I've always thought we could make our language much simpler by just removing lowercase letters as children spend about two years learning the diffrence and it makes it harder for immigrants, but I know people would never be able to expand their brains to learn that THIS ISN'T NECESSARILY YELLING. ALSO IT IS MUCH EASIER FOR PEOPLE WITH EYE PROBLEMS TO READ, but unfortunately is harder for some dyslexics.

I love it when someone posts or does something that the majority of people think is pointless or downright stupid and than that argument is made. Open your minds, be open to new things, new ways of thinking.

It's not because people don't want to grow, or consider new ideas that things such as this are ridiculed. It is because folks do take a moment to think about it and realize very quickly that it is a bunch of bunk. Try something new, think outside the box, jump off that bridge...no wait of course that is not a good idea.

Yes it is hard to change people's minds, but there are also good and bad ways to go about it. I would have no problem having a conversation about changes to the spelling standard to English. So starting a thread about it, stating proposals you like and making a coherent case for those is a good way to do it. Coming in to thread, writing in a piss poor manor and trying to link what you are doing to people being idiots is not.

Also, I would like to discuss a pressing issue. I would like my avatar to be a GOLDFISH, with all the implied intelligence and focus, so that when you all look at my posts, you associate my personality with a goldfish. The words herp or derp may be prominently displayed.

I have found numerous such pictures, and I know how to upload them to be my avatar, but I find I am too lazy to bother. So I request instead of Zoe, you all simply imagine there to be a goldfish there.

Thank you, that is all I have to say about that.

For Byte, who made it simple...

Aa' i' sul nora lanne'lle!

And as Byte pointed out (and I was sure she wouldn't be the only one to figure it out, but she's proven herself quite clever; penny for the little lady!), any one of us could take foreign-language posts, plug them into a translator program, read them, write a response, and translate that to respond.

But MOST of us choose not to try, don't we?

Does that make MOST of us lazy?

Language evolves. I get that; I really do. But you can't FORCE its evolution by just trying to jam it in people's faces. A generation ago, if I said I had a 1080p 1920-pixel HDMI HDTV, even A/V geeks wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about. Now a non-A/V geek like me knows what those things mean. They have become common, and through commonality gained everyday use.

A decade ago nobody would have known what the hell you were on about if you said you "tweeted" them. Language changes, but at its own pace.

Most of us use words now that we didn't know ten or more years ago. But we knew MOST of the words we use every day, and have added a few new ones. If you try to change the entire language overnight, you'll be met with a huge pushback, and you'll fail, and you'll accomplish nothing. If you start peppering your posts with a word here or there in newspeak, you'll make progress, because those words may catch on and become common.

:) Good wun Byte!

I know its irritating, everybody. Sorry, but the revolution against institutionalized stupidity haz to start sumwhere. Just read at least the 1st 4 pajez at nooalf.com. If you believe you hav the ability to participate in a real debate, you need to know wut youre oppozing.

Back on topic, gorrramit!

The debates and the poll trendz afterward expoze the truth. People believe wut they want to be true. To hell with facts and lojik!

Debate #1. Romney lied hiz ass off and did more flipflops than a fish in a row boat. But did the GoPs rize up in anger against hiz betrayal uv all the pozitionz he took to get their nomination? nope. not a peep. Insted he gets a huge boost based purely on style.

VP debate. The GoPs were expecting their oft proclaimed 'intellectual leader uv the Republican Party' to make poor old uncle Joe look like a fool. But Ryan got beat down like a punk and hiz policyz shown to be ill concieved crap and fantasy arithmatic. The reaction frum the Fox eko chamber: Biden wuz laffing like he wuz on drugz! He wuz disrespectful! The moderator wuz on their side!

Debate #2. It showz how well the GoP and its media propaganda machine hav isolated everybody, including Romney himself. He got up in frunt uv 65 million people without knowing the facts. He wuz so confident that he had a checkmate with the BenGazi terrorist thing that he coudnt rezist stepping into that pile uv poop and jamming the boot into hiz mouth for the third time. Seriously. You woud think sumwun in hiz campane, especially Ann and hiz family, woud hav slapped him silly the 2nd time and told him DONT GO THERE AGAIN!"

The entire exchange wuz an instant classic in the history uv prezidential debates on par with the great boxing matchez frum the likes uv Mike Tyson, George Forman, etc., a devastating knockout that shoud hav ended Romneyz campane in all practicality. nope. A minimal uptic in Obamaz poll numberz.

Debate #3. Romney mainly refrazed everything Obama sed. Again, the lojikl reaction frum the rite woud be howlz uv betrayal. Didnt happen. Pollz still showing a close race.

Humanz hav a bad habit uv cementing thingz into their brainz. Wutever fallz in first gets bilt into a castle, and no matter how weak it iz, they defend it against anything new that showz up that contradicts it. The GoP clown show thats been going on since Obama got elected iz just another glaring example uv this.

A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter c would be dropped to be replased either by k or s, and likewise x would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which c would be retained would be the ch formation, which will be dealt with later.

Year 2 might reform w spelling, so that which and one would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish y replasing it with i and Iear 4 might fiks the g/j anomali wonse and for all.

Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants.

Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez c, y and x — bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez — tu riplais ch, sh, and th rispektivli.

Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

Quote:

I was easily able to read Jo's post before last (and pretty much agreed with it, too). I have no problem with that, and I use things like 'cuz and ya myself. But to suddenly introduce an entirely new way of writing which takes me time to decipher turns me off. This is a "conversation"--not as fast as chat, but nonetheless read and responded to faster than writing a term paper. If I wanted to spend extra time deciphering something, I wouldn't have much interest in being here. Has nothing to do with "lazy", has to do with the fact that I've got a life, I allocate X number of hours here and then do other things. Why would I start trying to learn and decipher a new language just to have a conversation, or even a debate?

If Jo could INTERSPERSE his posts with his version of English, that wouldn't bother me. It's trying to work my way through entire paragraphs of nothing else that just makes me scroll past the post.

I believe in clarity of communication, as I said before; the internet has way too many pitfalls as it is when it comes to communication, since we can't see body language, facial expression and can't hear vocal inflection; I see no particular reason to complicate it further. That's just me.

I also still do not understand that numerical thing at all, but don't bother explaining it, I'm not particularly interested. That's not a dig at anyone, just a time saver for anyone who might want to further try to explain it.

None of this language stuff has anything to do with the initial post and title...while virtually everything gets thread jacked eventually, and this is a far more civil way to thread jack it, I'd rather return to the topic at hand. JMHO.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

He - and your daughter - can communicate in any way they'd like to.

If I want to make myself understood to someone else, it's incumbent upon ME to make sure they understand, not on me to call them a dumbass if they don't understand me. If they do not understand me, it's my failure to communicate effectively that I blame. If I do not understand them, it's a failing on their part to communicate effectively.

Im discussing language. Expressing my opinion, just as you have yours. And now you're the one bitching about everyone else needing to comply with one person's choice. Have you NO understanding of irony...?

Grow up and deal.

I also didn't demand they comply - you keep inventing things, and it doesn't reflect well on you. I merely said if they choose to continue to write like that, I choose not to read those posts.

I think its more reasonable (and responsible, see above) to try and help your daughter adapt to the world (as many people have done before her) than demand the world to adapt to her.

ANd thats a bullshit argument anyway - the person in question is not writing like that because they cannot write otherwise - they have CHOSEN to write like that. This is clearly established, so stop being disengenouse.

Wish, you've gone off the deep end. He clearly wrote: "the person in question is not writing like that because they cannot write otherwise - they have CHOSEN to write like that." He also wrote "to try and HELP your daughter adapt..." In other words, do whatever you can to assist her; at no point was he inferring (I'm guessing) that you COULD "fix" her, only that it's a good idea to do what you can to HELP; and his argument that this person is doing it by CHOICE shows he understands perfectly about your daughter's situation. Nobody is making fun of it, we (I believe) have the utmost respect for your situation and your bravery in dealing with it. Either you're upset or you're deliberately misunderstanding.

His, my and Mike's "arguments" (you won't even TRY "opinions"??) make perfect sense, and speak directly to the debate at hand. The question, as I see it, was whether to "adapt" to each individual's choice of writing style, or we're...whatever you've called us. THAT is the illogical argument; adapting is fine, but to ask (and I think what you've done is somewhat more itense than "ask", personally) a group of people communicating in one language to pay attention to someone who comes in suddenly and starts talking in a variation of that language is what's not logical. None of us have (to the best of my reading skills) TOLD this person he MUST adapt to our way, we have expressed our opinions (some more forcefully than others). We have the right to our opinions, just as you and the newcomer do--neither is right or wrong, just different.

I get the feeling you may have lost just a bit of perspective, or your emotions may have gotten wrapped up in the discussion. Whatever your reasons, for me at least this hasn't been an "argument" but merely a conversation, and I kinda mind being called a "moron" (certainly you're lumping me with same, given I've expressed almost exactly the same things in the last few posts as Mark has).

I'm happy to agree to disagree with you on this matter, but I'd appreciate it if you'd address people specifically if you're going to call them names. I also seriously doubt Mark, AS A TEACHER, is a moron. I know our educational system is in terrible condition, but I don't think they deliberately hire morons. I note for the record that Mal4, also I believe a teacher (?) feels somewhat the same as we do.

Have a nice day (well, yeah, that was said snidely--your rather obvious anger and lashing out triggers frustration).

When I meet someone like your daughter who CANNOT change or adapt, then I will do what I can to communicate with them in whatever way I can. I can make that choice.

It woud be nice if everywun woud go to the topic M52 started for debating Nooalf, but thats the nature uv forumz; thingz digress and people comment on wut interests them. Wudevr!

Anyway, there are sum excellent comments here. I wish the forum structure wuz better. Properly replying to each person iz a hassle here!

About the 'choose to not read bad spelling' comments:

Suppoze you had no choice. Suppoze it wuz 10x worse than the problem you hav with my nonstandard spelling.

Thats the reality for dyslexics and otherz who hav sum difference in perception or visual info processing. They dont even get a fair start in kindergarten and fall behind every year after untill they finally adapt to our goofed up excuse for an orthografy. Often they fail, ending up in a lifetime uv menial jobz no matter wut their real potential wuz. And you may know that a hi percentaj uv creativ geniusez are dyslexic.

And its not that this nonsystem we hav iz helping society in general. Its an unneccessarry burden on everybody from the minit they start to learn it till the last thing they rite wether they realize it or not.

About teachers: You uv all people shoud know wut a waste this iz. In countryz with sensibly spelled languagez, such az Italy, Korea and Bosnia, kidz learn to read and rite in a few months IF they dont alredy know wen they get to skool! Not 3 yearz. Not a 17% failure rate. Therez no multibillion dollar market for literacy training products, tutorz and skoolz. Dyslexics usually never even find out that they have the condition!

The bottom line iz that lojik works better than kaos. We dont need to keep foisting this mess on generation after generation to prove that. Thoze who are alredy literate dont feel a need for improvement, so they dont need to change. But they can at least give the next generation the choice.

I'll paste this into the Nooalf debate also. Make it eazier to comment on it and get this wun back on topic
