Bloomberg: NYC Marathon will go on

Quote:

NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the New York City Marathon will go on despite storm-related objections.

Bloomberg discussed the marathon Friday while giving a briefing on the storm.

He says New York has to show that "we are here and we are going to recover." Bloomberg says the marathon will "give people something to cheer about" after a "dismal week."

Bloomberg has come under fire for pressing ahead with the marathon in a city still reeling from Superstorm Sandy. Some New Yorkers say holding the 26.2-mile race would be insensitive and divert police and other important resources when many are still suffering.

Bloomberg says his predecessor, Rudy Giuliani (joo-lee-AH'-nee), made the right decision to let the marathon continue after the September 2001 terrorist attack.

NYC Marathon Is Canceled Following Storm Damage

Quote:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg reversed himself Friday and yielded to mounting criticism that this was no time to run the New York City Marathon: runners were ready but weary residents were still recovering from a monster storm named Sandy.

And just like that, the race was scrapped.

Bloomberg, who as late as Friday afternoon insisted the world's largest marathon should go on as scheduled Sunday, changed course shortly afterward amid intensifying opposition from the city comptroller, the Manhattan borough president and sanitation workers unhappy they had volunteered to help storm victims but were assigned to the race instead. The mayor said he would not want "a cloud to hang over the race or its participants."

"I'm shocked," said Clausen, who is from Munich. "Not at the situation, but at how short this decision is (in) coming."

There really are no words.

I have words.

I understand why he wanted it to go ahead, but it was unwise to announce it as such before making 100% sure that the majority of the city was actually in favor of it. Not to mention the volunteers and clean-up workers/heroes.

This led to a seriously unfortunate short-notice cancellation. Bummer.

I have to say, though, that any runner who didn't consider this a serious possibility was being naive. I heard some of the runners are donating their time and efforts to helping with the clean-up instead, though, which is heartening.

It's an less than ideal muddle but I wouldn't consider it a harrowing scandal.

Runners were given word that the race was indeed going to take place, from the very top. For such an event like this, you have to rely on the organization and judgement of those running the event, and the host city.

To suggest " well, the runners SHOULD have known... ", is nonsensical. Travel plans need to be made, as runners from all over the world, come to participate.

That means booking flights ( and often connecting flights ), rental cars, and hotel rooms.

I can't think of a worse response or decision, to first carry on w/ plans to run the race, and then cancel it, in all of sport.

Having run in a bigger race, although much shorter, I'm keen on the # of volunteers and organization it takes to put on an event of such magnitude first hand.

Bloomberg lives in a completely disconnected world from reality. This is just one more example.

I am not saying they should have known it would be cancelled after all. I'm saying they should have been aware of the possibility. Because a major disaster just happened there. That's just common sense and watching the news. No one can tell me they were absolutely blindsided by the fact that the cancellation happened, after all.

It sucks that a number of people apparently undertook needless travel and/or expenses, but I also don't think that they all booked their tickets after Sandy happened, after Bloomberg's announcement that the marathon would go ahead, so most of them would have incurred losses either way and if they traveled they did so on a reasonable risk.

And yes, it was stupidly handled. I still don't think it constitutes a disaster or an all-encompassing incompetence on behalf of the mayor.

I do.

Especially when you combine this with the list of unbelievable array of restrictions to personal freedoms this mayor's office has handed down.

Why does Rap find this so...what...egregious??

Absolutely. They wanted it to go ahead, it would have been a morale booster and a way to say "we're carrying on despite..." A good thing. How can some people not grasp that when there is something as gigantic as what happened there, we only find out, in bits and pieces, HOW much damage was done as time goes on. With Staten Island in particular--which they're calling the "epicenter" of the storm now--didn't even know how bad the damage was until afterwards, and are STILL finding out how bad it is today.
Quote:

Seriously? "In all of sport"? Rap's bias is so incredible...with relation to ANYTHING, any time, any situation which might possibly involve a negative to anyone even slightly liberal. Why can't he think outside that partisan barbed-wire fence?
Quote:

Bloomberg lives in a completely disconnected world from reality. This is just one more example.

I'm sorry, but to me someone who instantly reacts the way I just mentioned, then hangs onto it with whatever crumbs of "proof" they can find, is the one disconnected from reality. Certainly Bloomberg should have waited until as many of the facts as possible were in before making an announcement, and that's a shame, but to take it to this level? Wow. To take it to the level of " a disaster or an all-encompassing incompetence on behalf of the mayor". And we all know that if the mayor was a Republican, it would be a whole different discussion.

I'm truly sorry for the thousands who can't enjoy the race, particularly all those who traveled here from a long distance. I'm sure there are many who live in the area who were going to participate who lost their homes, etc., and weren't going to be able to participate anyway, and it's heartwarming to see that many of those who came from other places have decided to pitch in and help out. I think THOSE are the two important things here, not the concept that Bloomberg making a mistake was a disaster or an all-encompassing incompetence. Just makes me shake my head.

I don't think Bloomberg rises to the level of Trump, either; I think that's kind of funny, considering what an incredible piece of work Trump is and the things he says! D'ja hear him respond Thursday to Obama ignoring his $5 millin "offer"?
Quote:

Donald Trump blasted President Obama for not taking up his offer to release his college records, saying the president’s failure to do so was hard evidence he wasn’t born in the U.S.

“For President Obama not to accept $5 million (or much more) for his favorite charity can only mean one thing — the records are very bad," Trump wrote on his Facebook page. “Obviously he wasn’t born in this country, or, if he was, he said he wasn’t in order to receive financial aid and in order to have a clear and very easy path into a college or university. Only a very stupid person would believe otherwise. There can be no other reason that so much money would not be so easily and routinely collected for charity.”

“The fact is, this may go down as the greatest con in the history of American politics, or perhaps the greatest con of all time,” Trump continued. “When these records actually do surface in the future, people will say Donald Trump was 100 percent correct.” http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/265365-trump-obamas-f

You really see a comparison? Seriously?

ETA: Which is NOT to say Bloomber isn't an egotistical idiot. My opinion of him is pretty low, too, just not THAT low!

They believe they can make us better.

I do not hold to that.

It's not for them to decide such things.

So, Rappy - should the race be on, or not?

I mean, if they want to run, they should be able to, right? It's not like anyone from the city, state, or federal government has to be there to do anything. The runners will clear the course, police the area, and clean up afterwards, right?

Or are you saying they didn't build that?

Should have been cancelled immediately. No brainer. Bloomy wanted to keep things as normal as possible, to get the city back on its feet, but this wasn't the time. Too soon after, with far too much clean up to attend to.

I heard one audio clip of a resident / city worker who said that Bloomberg is worried bout draining water from a tunnel, so that runners can get through, and they're still pulling bodies out of there. It's a complete disconnect from the real world and where Bloomberg lives. I really do think there's a few cards missing from his deck.

I heard an NPR report that every day that New York City isn't "open for business", the city loses $400,000,000. So I can definitely see why anyone and everyone wants to get things up and humming again ASAP.

Geez, this is a nothing story.

A bit of chaos after the storm. Somebody said something would happen, but it couldn't. Boo hoo.

Are people safe, do they have water and electricity back on? Is transport running, roads cleared? Why should a marathon take precedence to these things.

Well, that IS the story. Most folks would say it shouldn't. Mayor Bloomy tried to put on the race anyways. 40,000 runners, many from all over the world, + race officials, volunteers, spectators... ... it's kinda a big deal.

Has anyone else noticed that Rappy seems to be more upset by some runners being disappointed because a race got canceled than he ever was about more than a thousand deaths due to Katrina?

Is anyone surprised?

Huh. Bringing up another hurricane and the government response in its wake is a "straw man", but bringing up a propaganda hit piece movie that's totally unrelated to anything having to do with the topic is completely relevant. (See Rappy's "voting is the best revenge" thread to see what I'm talking about).

Interesting.
