Hello,

I wanted to broach what is potentially a sore spot with some insensitive speculation.

I wondered if it was possible that the vast destruction caused by Sandy might provide a net increase in economic stimulus?

It occurred to me that the damage may require a vast investment in construction and infrastructure, billions of dollars worth. Doubtless some businesses will close due to the storm, but I wondered if there might be more jobs created than destroyed by this incident.

Japan saw an economic boost from its tsunami reconstruction last year.

This article directly answers the question:

provide-economic-stimulus

It's not personal. It's just war.

Hello,

From that article, it seems the affected regions are doing less well, but overall the economy received a boost.

It's hard to try to find a silver lining in such a cloud, but since the cloud has already fallen upon us, any silver is a boon.

I agree, Anthony. Was hearing on the radio yesterday about how the price of autos may go up because of the huge demand Sandy has created by destroying so many. Interestingly, the cost of USED cars has already increased--they didn't speak to that (and I believe they said it was happening before Sandy)--which I found surprising. But replacing all the lost cars, it seems to me, will be a boon to the auto industry at the very least. Tho', would that be at the cost to the insurance industry, which will no doubt raise rates, thereby hurting the economy, and, and, and...sigh...it's just too confusing for me, I'm afraid.

Thus your hypothesis might follow that which is already taking place in that particular segment of the economy, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Of course, if improvement follows what you have theorized, I guess the right could blame Sandy for it...and their followers would no doubt have no problem switching from "Sandy ruined Romney's chances" to "Sandy improved the economy" I'm sure...after all, the election is over, so I'm sure they'd happily dump blaming Sandy for its outcome if the hurricane became useful in robbing Obama of any responsibility...

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

One can hope, surely investment and construction are a MUCH better idea than vulture capitalist looting and devastation, some parts of New Orleans never recovered from the "help" they got from various corps.

Credit where it's due though, the Governor and State Attorney General are rather hawkish so far in preventing that from coming to pass.

Housing and Urban Development Director Shaun Donovan has
been chosen to lead the federal government's assistance to
states rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy, President Obama
announced Thursday after touring parts of New York.

"We thought it'd be good to have a New Yorker who's going to
be the point person," Obama said from Staten Island, where
he concluded a tour with Donovan and state lawmakers that
included a flyover of Far Rockaway and Breezy Point in Queens,
where more than 100 homes burned as floodwaters kept fire-
fighters at bay.
