All the Republican Party needs to recover from its presidential defeat is a new message, a new image, and some fresh faces. And usher Mitt Romney offstage. That's it. Piece of cake.

But first, it must usher out the remembrance of party leaders past. That would be Mitt Romney – who, in fact, has been making it easier for the GOP to do just that.

Echoing his infamous “47 percent” off-the-record comment to big donors during the campaign, he upped that to 51 percent in his post-election remarks (again, to donors) about how Barack Obama had won by purchasing his vote majority with “gifts” to liberal interest groups.

Grapes never seemed so sour, and Republicans were quick to rebuke such blame-gamesmanship.

The Associated Press interviewed a bunch of Republican notables, and their message was essentially the same.

Veteran Republican strategist Ron Kaufman, who advised Romney's campaign: "The bottom line is we were perceived to be intolerant on some issues. And tone-deaf on others."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who ran against Romney in the GOP primaries and caucuses: “We were clearly wrong on a whole range of fronts…. There are whole sections of the American public that we didn't even engage with.”

Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who chaired the party during the 1990s: "We've got to have a very brutally honest review from stem to stern of what we did and what we didn't do, and what worked and what failed.”

Kevin McLaughlin, a Republican operative who worked on several Senate races: “We need candidates who are capable of articulating their policy positions without alienating massive voting blocs.”More at http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/The-Vote/2012/1118/GOP-crafts-ne

What I can't figure out is how they think they can "engage" the grokups like Latinos, African-Americans, women and young people when their POLICIES seriously affect these groups negatively. Seems to me "articulating" things like defunding PLlanned Parenthood, "self-immigration", cutting social programs, etc., etc.--in essence their entire policy position--can't help BUT alienate these groups, however well they're "articulatled". Yet there doesn't seem to be any mention of CHANGING any of their policies. "Engaging" with sections of the American public isn't gonna do the trick, as I see it.

Niki,

They've been getting people to vote against their own interests for decades. It's how they do politics. Policy has always been the man behind the curtain for the neocons. Instead of changing their policies in the slightest, they'll just buy off more Latino, black and women candidates to shill for them.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

You're talking about the Democrats, right ? And how they've trapped blacks into the govt plantation , and making things generally worse for their families, for decades.

Uh, Mr. McLaughlin, perhaps you don't need a different CANDIDATE. Perhaps you need POLICIES that don't alienate voters.

Making that fails claim over and over is not going to make it true, or get the GOP the Black vote.

Nick, , yeah, that about nails it. He needs a new schtick, obviously!

And yeah, Cav, that about nails it. Will be interesting to see how they deal with it once all the white males are TRULY in the minority...which may be damned close to happening already, it would seem.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Tea Party’s Martin: GOP ‘Took Us Out of Play’
http://www.newsmax.com/US/martin-tea-party-gop/2012/11/12/id/463857

Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots,
charged in an exclusive Newsmax TV interview that “the
GOP, the Republican Party, took the Tea Party issues off
the table” during the 2012 election. ...
“They took us out of play – and now they want to blame
us for their loss. You can’t have it both ways.”

I think more likely a blindness to reality. Given how many tea partiers were voted out this time, maybe they SHOULD look to their own, but that's probably too much to expect. There's a real hard line mentality to the tea party activists which I can't get my head around, but which I guess is pretty common in fanatics. They still have too much power for my comfort, but I'm hoping recent developments mean more rational Republicans are recognizing that their brand of "no compromise!" doesn't work. I'm hoping...
