...and I do, here's something for you.

Last Summer, a litter of river otters was found in our own Corte Madera Creek, just a couple of miles from us, a place we frequent often, and somewhere I never would have imagined river otters inhabiting, this being such a populous area.
Quote:

She and her family had been seen playing in and around Corte Madera Creek for several weeks, but when Greenbrae residents heard desperate distress calls instead of the otters' usual chirps and whistles, they grabbed their kayak and paddled toward the sounds.

To their horror they found one of the baby otters drowning! Mother otters don't teach their pups to swim until they are 3 - 4 months old, and this little one was much too young to be in deep water.

They pulled her from the water and called the Marin Humane Society to rush her to WildCare. Admitted as patient #681, this baby was hypothermic and risked pneumonia from her cold plunge. She was very weak and her little body barely survived the ordeal. Two other siblings were found later, drowned and beyond help. Their mother was never found.

In the Wildlife Hospital, our supportive care, including heat, oxygen, subcutaneous fluids and antibiotics, slowly revived the little patient and by Monday she was alert and very feisty. Medical staff bottle-fed her every three hours (even through the night!) and she continued to improve. Click here to view video of this baby being given her bottle.

Otters are very social critters, so releasing her to the wild without another otter would be quite problematic to her survival. Luckily, in August another, male, orphaned otter was found up in Sonoma by Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue, which built a brand new pool just for their species.

Here they are meeting for the first time. The little male had apparently not been introduced to water, so hadn't had the courage to swim in the new pool, until she joined him:

Okay, here's the new development: They've been undergoing rehab together ever since. Rescuing baby critters like otters and returning them to health is one thing, but as they came in as babies, the behaviors that would help them survive in the wild are always a question. The fact that the young male was too afraid to swim shows just that.

Well,I just got an update: they just got released up at Lake Sonoma, and it looks good for their survival. Given it's a male and a female, they'll probably stay together and start their own family.

River otters, cetaceans (whales/dolphins) and wolves have always been my favorite animals in the wild, so for me it is especially heartwarming to have two orphaned otters, who definitely wouldn't have survived otherwise, returned to the wild.

Wildcare rehabs over 4,000 animals from as many as 200 different species every year, all done by donations and volunteers except for a couple of paid admin positions. See, there are some good people out there!

Ahhh, but "glass half full", Byte! If that little one hadn't been rescued, or if only one male had been alive to BE rescued, the other orphan from Sonoma wouldn't have nearly the chance of survival he does now, with his own little mate in tow. It's obvious he's already interested--if you watch the video of their meet, it's pretty transparent he's suffering from "male hormones" when he meets her! Pretty much a done deal they're gonna be mates, so all in all, it's serendipitous.

Swimming is second nature for river otters; once she'd learned, she'd be drawn to it no matter what trauma she'd endured. For me it was funny to watch the little male be so scared of getting in the bit pool--if you look at the very beginning of their meeting, he WAS playing in the smaller pool. I hadn't realized before that they have to be TAUGHT to swim by their mothers!

And yes, I too mourn the loss of the others; the idea of a whole litter of river otters on Corte Madera Creek would have been the thrill of a lifetime for me. Wasn't meant to be, so I'll take the consolation prize.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Adorable, but a wee bit obnoxious...
Then again that's kind of a petty grudge - they stole my FOOD!
Bad enough to have ones toothpaste stolen by raccoons, but having ones fish jacked by Otters while you're taking a leak is kind of embarassing.

Shouldn't be embarrassing, Frem...they are absolute PROS at theivery! You are among a very big group of people who've had things stolen from themn by otters, trust me. Even some of them dumb enough not to pick up their fish, and to watch the thievery happen right in front of their noses!

Now THAT's embarrassing! Their curiosity is insatiable, and they quite often steal even things inedible, including CAMERAS:

So count yourself lucky all you lost was a fish! (If you listen closely, you can even hear their "churring"...especially loud at 1:59 and again at 3:01 and 3:18. I LOVE that sound!)

I knew a couple in the Santa Cruz Mountains who had a pair, and I loved to visit. I'd put my coat on the floor and they'd lay on the coat, staring straight at me while their little paws madly went through the pockets, churring away happily. This couple lived in an "otter-proof" home because of it...drawers with PADLOCKS on them ('cuz they figured out how to open simple hooks and stuff), a dinner table which was a wooden picnic bench ('cuz you can't keep otters of a table!), bare floors ('cuz the otters tore up the rugs to get underneath them), and everything in the house above otter height! They also had a huge St. Bernard, who was completely ruled by the two little otters...

They are masters at getting into anything and everything...especially where food is concerned!

Wild ones have no compunction about approaching human habitation to steal from their pond...

Believe me, 'coons got NOTHING on river otters when it comes to thievery! And yes, if there ever was the perfect word for river otters, "obnoxious" does come to mind...

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Oh so cute!!!!!! (in obscenely high squeaky voice). I think otters are one of my favorite animals. I love the Ring of Bright Water movie, one of my favorites, but I found the book to be less to my liking. I know Niki loves the book too though. These little guys are adorable. I prefer wild animals to tame ones, wild animals don't scare me like the tame ones do, I like looking at them and watching nature videos etc.

Do you mean wild animals versus DOMESTICATED ones? "Tame" could mean any number of things--those two otters I used to visit were certainly "tame", but they weren't "domesticated" and I realized years later that, much as I enjoyed them and so did their owners, they didn't belong living where they did. They only had a huge bathtub to swim in, for one thing, and mainly it's just wrong.

If you do mean domesticated, may I ask why they scare you? They are, for the most part, far less dangerous than wild animals, so I don't know whether you mean you like LOOKING at wild animals (nature shows, etc.) or you like wild animals in the flesh. Just curious.

Pets shed and stuff and they make me skittish and its just too hard for me being around them. So I like animals that stay away from me and don't get near my stuff. So thusly, I like animals in the wild, at the zoo, on TV, at a distance.

Hero = Scrooge, bah humbug.
I don't reckon they'd have enough meat on 'em anyway. They have more value as cuteness candy.

Hero's just an asshole with nothing to contribute. He just pops in and writes something stupid, then goes away again.

As far as I know, nobody eats river otters. He's just being crass, as usual.

But it's hard to nuzzle a cute puppy or kitty if they're " at a distance ".

And of course Hero is being silly. He'd never eat something so cute. Geeze!

They eat them in India. I figure as 1/16th Indan (Cherokee), I'm honoring my heritage.
