But that it should happen to the others doing the same:

A major restaurant chain said Tuesday that its complaints about President Obama's healthcare law have been bad for business.

Darden Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden and Red Lobster, had previously announced plans to cut its workers' hours so that it wouldn't have to provide health insurance under the law's employer mandate.

Darden is one of several large employers to consider rolling back workers' hours in response to the Affordable Care Act. But the company said Tuesday that negative publicity surrounding that position might be bad for business.

The company on Tuesday lowered its earnings estimates for fiscal 2013, and said in a statement that the weaker projections owe in part to concerns over a backlash to its healthcare stance.

"Our outlook for the year also reflects the potential impact, though difficult to measure, of recent negative media coverage that focused on Darden within the full-service segment and how we might accommodate healthcare reform," Darden CEO Clarence Otis said in a statement.

The company said it would figure out how to make the new healthcare requirements work.

After saying Darden's brands are working to improve their products and marketing, Otis added that "we are also committed to accommodating healthcare reform in ways that work for our employees and guests."

Several restaurant chains and other businesses with large numbers of part-time workers have said they plan to either roll back hours or raise prices to offset additional healthcare costs.

One such firm — Papa John's Pizza — suffered a hit in its brand favorability following its comments about the health law, according to a recent consumer study.

The research firm YouGov found that customers' impression of Papa John's and Applebee's fell in the weeks after Election Day, when both companies indicated plans to cut workers' hours or raise costs because of healthcare reform. http://thehill.com/blogs/healthwatch/health-reform-implementation/2709

I love it. Maybe Americans DO care (at least a bit) about this bullshit after all. I sincerely hope so.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Business owners tend to fall into two categories: the bottom feeders and people of the community. Some small business owners basically say" I keep my staff by superior remuneration. The money I spend on benefits is more than made up for with the money I DON'T spend on hiring, training, customer relations, and firing." These tend to be REAl small business owners, as opposed to franchise-owners.

Franchise owners, who owe big-daddy-corporation, obviously tend to take a bottom-feeder approach.

In a nutshell, Sig. One reason I'll never be caught at an Olive Garden or Red Lobster...or Denny's or so many others! Because it's also true, for me at least, that chain places serve lousey food--and inconsistent food at best, for just that reason.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Saw that same headline somewhere last week. Mrs. BC & I aren't eating out-- broke, unemployed, etc.-- but we are remembering companies that took that attitude. We ever get any money again, we know which restaurants we won't patronize.

Good for you! Yeah, we rarely eat out too, 'cuz of financial reasons mostly, but when we do, we frequent one of a few local restaurants we know, not the big chains.

You can be SURE I'll never go near another Papa John's, after hearing what that asshole has been saying on TV. I hope they, too, lose customers as a result!

It would be a help to the overall healthcare of the American people if these shit-shacks went out of business. They serve pure crap - fat wrapped in starches soaked in salt and brined in sugar, and then deep-fried, frozen, and deep-fried again.

It's a curious stance that they don't want to provide healthcare for their employees, especially if any of their workers actually eat any of the dreck these places call "food".

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

My wife and I sometimes like to lunch at Olive Garden, where we enjoy a salad and breadsticks served with alfredo sauce for dipping. They tend to have a very nice salad, and you can eat as much as you like.

The kind of language I see used to describe Olive Garden, one would think it was a McDonalds or Taco Bell.

That having been said, I'm glad they are recognizing the stupidity of trying to short-change their workers. These places benefit from a loyal, well-trained staff. Such a staff is impossible to keep if you treat them like dirt. If service suffers, nobody will care about the food.

I find myself somewhat gratified by the backlash response...

The Dennys in question was just a single franchise based in Florida, if I remember correctly, and the overwhelmingly hostile response which came back at ALL Dennys caused the big bosses to put the screws to the guy real hard since his actions were *costing them money*, morality be damned.

In a nutshell, that is what we need to do, remind these assholes that without employees, without customers - THEY HAVE NO INCOME.
They feed on us, but it's like a shark chomping on pirahna - ENOUGH pirahna can eat the damn shark right back!

We just need to make that abundantly clear to them on an ECONOMIC level, since appealing to the moral decency of Corpies is a wasted effort.

Didn't hear about the Denny's thing, Frem...can you tell us the details?

Sorry, Anthony, it's true, I really shouldn't class Olive Garden with McDonalds, etc., it is quite different. But from what I've heard, the food is pretty lousey--EXCEPT for the salad and breadsticks thing. Just what I've heard, I've never been there myself.

There's a short capsule version on Slate here..

ase_john_metz_smacked_down_by_denny_s_ceo.html

But the huff-n-puff has a far more entertaining dissection.

Basically one asshole franchise owner threatened a 5% "obamacare" surcharge and suggested shorting the tip if customers didn't like it - resulting in a huge backlash against ALL Dennys restaurants, and the CEO of the company rather personally cramming his boot up Metz's ass about it.

Ahh, yes, I remember the "tip" thing...didn't recall it was Denny's. Screw 'em all--sorry, just my opinion. Whenever we went through Nevada on our way to Idaho I was totally shocked at how fat all the other people in the restaurant were--and the GIGANTIC portions of the food they were eating! But them, these places going out of business would only be replaced by others; America's desire to over-eat is a long way from changing. But I've read many times that it's the cheapness of places like McDonald's which keeps those with low incomes eating there, rather than trying to provide healthier meals for their families. I understand why and I sympathize, but I wish it weren't so, and that (at best) more healthy options existed.

Nonetheless yes, I DO get pissed at these guys sticking their heads into politics the way they have been, when it's all a crock and they're lying through their teeth. All it shows is their political partisanship, not anything to do with reality:
Quote:

A month after the U.S. Supreme Court had affirmed the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, 88% of employers told Towers Watson they had no plans to terminate their health care plans for those working 30 hours or more a week — up from 71% in 2011. Also, 77% of companies said health care benefits were central to rewarding and retaining employees.Much more at http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2012/09/10/bisc0910.htm]
It's places like McDonald's and Safeway and other cheapos who don't offer health insurance coverage to part timers, and move people from full to part time to avoid it:
Quote:

In 2012, 28 percent of organizations of all sizes that offer health benefits offer them to part-time workers, according to the 2012 Employer Health Benefits Survey report from the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Education Trust. That is a notable increase from the 16 percent reported in 2011, but in line with the 25 percent reported in 2010.

Larger employers are more likely to offer health benefits to part-time employees. In 2012, 45 percent of employers with 200 or more full- and part-time employees offer benefits to part-timers, compared with 28 percent of smaller companies, the survey of 3,326 public and private employers showed. Part-time jobs are common in the retail, food services and construction industries. They are often low-paying and typically do not require advanced skills or training.
