Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Something in this article piqued my interest: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-20852274

Quote:

Mrs French... told the Press Association news agency the school sometimes invited business leaders and entrepreneurs in to talk to students.

"One of the young entrepreneurs, a lady, dared to say that she had probably put her business ahead of her son, and the sharp intake of breath from all of the girls was audible," she said.

"They were all absolutely shocked, so yes, we are still creating a generation of girls who think that the whole idea of looking after children is really the most important thing, once you have a child."

Oh noes!

Its a terror that a woman could work so hard and keep a home!!!

Horror!

I'll bet (the ones who find this terrible)... their house is a pigsty and they eat nothing but fast food.

Edited.

JONGSSTRAW

Growing up in the 50's and 60's I had the greatest stay-at-home mom in the world. Her only weakness was her cooking. Her burgers had lumps of gray fat on top, her mashed potatoes were lumpy, her spaghetti was mushy, and every Friday we had Mrs. Paul's fish cakes put on our plates. Going out to eat was better than Superman and Christmas put together. Sure wish we had women's lib back then.

Wulf, the little girls gasped because the woman said she didn't put her kid first. ...I almost agree? If you're going to have kids then at least one of the parents honestly does have to put the kids first - just doesn't have to be the mother is all.

More than that I'm not going to say, because I'm not having them. They're unhygienic, noisy, and they damage my already nonexistent calm.

Less dangerous over the internet though. I wish you good luck with your little girl. How is she doing by the way? It's been almost six months, right? Would she be making sounds now?

Um...isn't it? Aren't most of the western world's problems with today's youth caused, in part, by inadequate parenting - by parents not being there for their kids, letting 'em just do whatever they want?

I'm not a parent myself, but it seems to me that if you have children, they should come first. Always. Being a parent is a full-time job; I've looked after kids at various times in my life, so I have at least some idea of what it's like, and the prospect of having my own (highly unlikely) is terrifying.

Please note that I'm not saying that the kids are only Mom's responsibility - far from it. I am not a member of the 'barefoot and pregnant' or get-your-ass-back-into-the-kitchen-you-cute-little-thing schools of thought; those have been consigned to the dustbin of history, and rightly so. The parents should decide - ideally before they have the kids - how the workload's going to be split. And let's not talk about "quality time", okay? For kids, quantity is quality. It doesn't matter all that much what activities you share with the kids - it's that you're sharing them that matters so much. Kids need time with their parents, as much as the parents can spare.

Nor am I saying a single parent can't raise kids properly; I know many who have. I'm sure we all know many who haven't, too, as well as many two-parent families who've gone wrong. It happens.

I'm in agreement with most here, that when you have children they need to be a top priority, whether you work outside the home or not. Either way their needs need to be at the top of your list. That certainly doesn't mean you should neglect your other relationships or that you shouldn't have any time for your own ambitions, a good parent can do all of these things, but those kids need to be a priority.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

Oh dear, you all missed the point of the article then.

No where in the article did it say there wasn't another parent involved. Maybe the dad was a full time stay at home. Assumptions, people, assumptions.

Men still never have to choose whether to have a career or kids, but women who are mothers are still judged when they have a career, harshly too.

No one ever comments when fathers work 70 hour weeks, are never at home, travel and focus entirely on their career, but the condemnation of women if they do the same. Whoa.

We both share the parenting, and the bringing in an income. I couldn't have studied or do the kind of work I do if I had a husband who was one of those 70 hour a week men. The truth is, both of us enjoy our jobs (mostly) but we also enjoy our family life, holidays etc.

The issue with the 50's and 60's which most people like Jong tend to miss, was that women had no choice. If you were not cut out for being a stay at home mum, too bad sweetheart. And while all that Leave it to Beaver stuff might have been great for kids and husbands, it was not so great for many women who were financially dependant on their husbands.

That's not completely true. Society frowns on fathers who don't make time for their children. But maybe not as harshly as it does on women.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Well, that would certainly speed up my eventual intentions to get a large percentage of the Army to throw down their rifles, turn to their commanders and say "Are you fucking nuts ? NO."

I'd be interested in knowing if any boys in the class also gasped at the idea of a parent putting their work ahead of their child.
