The Great Georgia Cat Chase

Back in 1988 I did a radio program on WGST called The Georgia Cat Chasing Championships. The contest was simple. You load a cat and about six skydivers on an airplane … then you climb way up yonder. First the cat gets thrown out, then the skydivers follow and chase the cat. The cat is all splayed out like a flying squirrel, so it’s easy to catch up. The skydiver who lands with the cat is the winner.

You can’t imagine the trouble I caused when this was first broadcast. Sheriffs across Georgia were searching local airports to try to find us and stop the competition. Advertisers were calling WGST and cancelling advertising contracts due to listener complaints. It was only during the last few seconds of the show that I quickly announced to the listeners that the whole thing had been a fake.

I... don't think a radio program in 1988 is the same thing as an online youtube video of a cat falling - possibly on loop with a background edited in for the appearance of cat sky diving. Can't really watch the video to verify authenticity.

Real or fake, WTF is wrong with people?

EDIT: Internet says it's fake, which was my first guess. Still a bad idea for a commercial. I'm particularly troubled by the fan that they were apparently holding the cats over to simulate the wind - what it they dropped one?

Uh oh, I didn't actually _look at the picture, I just saw the title and responded, because looking at pictures actually requires effort for me. I'm sorry I responded to this one I guess. I don't think my little brother would like this one now that I know what it is. Maybe I should erase my initial response.

Well, the radio program was a bit ... a comedy bit. No actual cats were harmed, as it was nothing but 2 guys PRETENDING to do the play-by-play of the event. Which never actually took place. ( The GA Cat Chase winner was to move on to the Nationals, though I don't recall if there was a World Cat Chase event... )

The joke is , of course, the reaction by cat fanciers at the mere idea of tossing Snowflake or what ever out of a plane into a free fall , and having 2 guys chase to see who can grab it before it ( and they ) hit the ground. Friends of Cats, ( FoC ? ) are expected to be mortified, and the rest of us are suppose to laugh, but only because no real cats were harmed. Clearly, the joke ends when anyone takes the absurdity of tossing a cat out of a plane to the next level, and actually DOES it!

*edit - I just watched the video, sound muted, and it's fraking hilarious! A bunch of kitties, in sky diving gear, all synchronized , and the close up of their paws coming together and touching... ha!

Of, of course, they do go on to show dogs, while strapped to their owners, sky diving. THAT'S not horrific, but a cat is ?

Folks need to lighten up. It's humor.

The oddest thing about this to me, is that Kallista would have ENJOYED that game - hell, she probably would have liked skydiving, the adventurous little hellion that she was....
I'd occasionally stuff her into my snowmobile suit and unzip it enough for her to pop her head and and then go tearing off on one of my heavily upgraded motorbikes and she freakin LOVED it.

I miss that cat, I do.

The kitties in the faked part, those free falling, looked pretty indifferent or even enjoying themselves. The one which seems to have actually gone sky diving, the tandem human / kitty jumper, THAT little guy didn't look too happy.

Why do you say that ? I mean, the cat looks terrified, but the dogs seem to take it in stride. I think, as long as the dogs are w/ their human, they figure they're fine. Cats ? No friggen way!

Looking/seeming fine is not the same as being fine.

When the dog Laika was sent up into orbit by the Russians to test the sputnik capsules, they didn't have cameras in the cabin, but were able to measure how much food the dog ate based on weight sensors, and the dog's heart rate. During the dog's trip, she ate food several times, apparently, functioning as normal. But her heart rate remained elevated the entire time.

It's not entirely CGI. They held the cats over a fan.

That's like holding a baby over a balcony, or over a pissed off alligator. Kinda all kinds of wrong, dudes.

For the record I didn't think juggling geese was very funny either. I like the interpretation my friend had, that juggling geese was a band name and Wash just misunderstood.

Really? We really don't see a difference between plush toys made of fabric and stuffing sewn to look like cats being tossed around, and a live cat held over a spinning fan blade?

And has it occurred to you to wonder WHY they only use stuffed cats in that scene, and not live cats?

Wash didn't say he SAW it necessarily, he said that "on some worlds they juggle geese - my hand to god, baby geese, goslings, they were juggled." There's some potential room there that Wash misunderstood an idle comment and made some assumptions.

Or there's no such world and he's just pulling people's legs. Goslings are bitey.

But ONE of the scenarios has the potential for an ACCIDENT. Do you understand? In one of those scenarios, people valued live cats enough (or didn't want their faces clawed up) to put in stuffed toy doubles. In the other scenario they dangled live cats over a spinning fan blade.

One of those shows a pretty shocking disregard for the sanctity of life, the other is merely just irreverent.

Stuffed cats actors pretend are real - irreverent.

Live cats over fan blades - could possibly die.

Here's it put another way: how would you feel about this if one of the cats was accidentally dropped into the fan and died? Would it be unacceptable?

So, doesn't dangling a live cat over a spinning fan blade constitute an unacceptable RISK?

Whether or not a cat actually died, it's still WRONG either way.

Are you certain that these fans are open, having no grill or barrier between the 'razor sharp' blades and said cat ?

You seem to be certain that , had a cat fallen onto the fan, they'd be instantly blenderized, or dismembered.

I wasn't assuming anything.

Even if it has a protective grill, the distance between bars on an average fan grill is maybe 6 millimeters, smaller than the individual toes of a cat - or possibly the conformable foot of the cat, in profile as it passes between the bars, possibly helped by momentum from falling. Rather like one time I got my arm caught in a narrow space because I was shoving something in there.

The fan could also potentially be damaged if it was knocked over during operation or by an impact with a cat, which would increase the danger even with a protective grill.

But I also suspect that the fan may have been open. They only mention a single fan under all of the cats, and for the shot I've seen, it would probably have to be a fairly large fan for that, maybe a wind tunnel fan.

I think it was a bad idea and a liability nightmare regardless of the specific circumstances.

Byte, I think you worry too much. It's a stupid ad, but people should be smart enough to realize it's fake...nobody is dumb enough these days to make a COMMERCIAL about cats sky diving for real! I'm pretty sure they did everything to keep the cats safe---irritated no doubt, but safe.

I've seen dogs who sky-dive with their owners just fine, dogs who really like it, as well as dogs deep-sea diving who LOVE it. Some things are cool, but I think animals should be given the CHOICE, and of course they can't choose to sky dive. That Russian one, if you notice, went totally nuts when they jumped, flailing around madly.

The dog and trampoline was hysterical. Thank you, I enjoyed that. It's along the lines of those foxes I put up playing on a trampoline. Something about a trampoline seems to fascinate some animals, and I can see how it would be enjoyable to feel that sense of freedom; I used to LOVE the trampoline!

Humans do stupid things. Humans can be very stupid. End of statement.

Not sure why you're making the assumption that the fan didn't have a blade guard, like pretty much every fan manufactured in the past 30 or 40 years has. I know every fan I have in my house has a blade guard that no part of a cat could get through; paws, head, legs, or tail.

Might not ? Good grief, you do worry too much.

Did you even watch the video ? The cats were pretty damned relaxed or indifferent. I'd say they even enjoyed it, or at least tolerated it. The only animal which seemed to really be upset over anything was the cat who really DID sky dive, strapped to his human. Talk about tormenting an animal! If you're gonna get worked up over anything, that'd be your issue, right there.

Looking at the fans I have here, there are none that I can stick my little finger into far enough to encounter the blade, and I don't have big hands. Getting any part of a cat far enough into them to hit a blade would pretty much require you to chop up the cat beforehand.

If you're going to worry about cats, worry about the guy in New Zealand who wants to do away with all the cats in that country to protect native species, or the lady in D.C. who was poisoning cats because she was a bird lover and didn't like cats killing them.

I've owned cats, so I have a pretty good idea of the size and length of their paws. All the cats in the video were adults, so they don't have tiny kitten paws, and I'm doubtful they could have stuck any part of their anatomy through the grill on my fans, and a further two inches to where the blades are. Also, if a fan is blowing at you, the first part of a blade you'd hit would not be an edge, but the angled surface of the blade. Anyway, the wind effects shown on the video could mostly have been done with a hair dryer with no heat on.

Besides, I caught one of the neighborhood cats yesterday and tried to stick parts of him in my fans. No harm, except to my welding gloves.

That's not funny. The cat was clearly terrified.

And I suspect you weren't so reckless as to drop the cat onto the fan, even if the fan had a protective grill. That's because to do so would be a violation of common sense.

The point is, there could have been an accident, and these people making this commercial were reckless.

Bad taste, unquestionably! And nothing wrong with being concerned about animals being hurt. What I find sad (and slightly amusing) is how determined you seem to be to come up with SOME reason the cats "could have" been hurt--to the extent that you are reeeely reaching, in my opinion. There's a difference. Concern is rational; your attempts to prove something which doesn't exist isn't. JMHO.

Check out the cats in the video. Does even ONE of them look particuarly perturbed? Are any of them flailing around like they're scared? Disgusted, yes; frightened, no. Cats put up with a lot of human insanity, and just don't give a f*ck. See photos at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/14/skydiving-cats-swedish-pet-in
surance_n_2129352.html#slide=1380817

I've had many fans; none could POSSIBLY injure a cat, or anything else that touched them. We know the video was a CGI fake, we know no cats were harmed, and even our own SPCA, I'm betting, wouldn't classify it as "animal abuse" or even "potential animal abuse". The "debate" has just gotten to the point where it's silly, is all.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Interesting. My concerns are "silly." Perhaps I should purchase a fan with a protective grill, plug it in, turn it on, then deliberately fall on it.

I wonder what would happen.

Unless you have cat sized appendages, not much. Other than mucking up a brand new fan.

Uh huh. Yeah, that's all that would happen, huh?

The fan blades can actually cut through the steel grill if the grill is deformed by, say, an impact. It can also cause the fan blades to become loose, even spin off the mount.

And I guess all the warnings about not putting fingers even near the grill of a fan while it's running are just for laughs.

Your concern for my well being and the well being of the cats is... touching. Truly.

Stay away from the fans!

The link you gave was to a story of a fan which had clearly been used, over and over, and suffered from some sort of fatigue.

*sigh*

Really, this thread has gone on too gorram long.

Empathy for non existent kitty dismemberment is now exhausted.

I'm out.
