Mao was one of worst mass murderers in history. His cultural revolution during the '60s killed millions of people. His Red Guard's idea of education meant that if you hadn't memorized and couldn't quote from his little red book upon demand you and your family got executed.

Of course you don't.

(C)ritics have labeled him a dictator whose administration oversaw systematic human rights abuses, and whose rule is estimated to have caused the deaths of 40–70 million people mainly through starvation, forced labor and executions placing his rule at the top of the list of most people killed by democide in human history.

Yeah, and I bet he made the trains run on time too, so all in all, he was a pretty cool guy, huh?

You don't get it, Brenda. This quote is a sign that Obama plans to implement his Great Leap Forward into state controlled communism in the next 4 years. Watch this space.

And you can quote me: The USA will be a communist dictatorship within 4 years.

That's because you're not a reactionary idiot. You, ulike some, are capable of understanding that quoting someone isn't an endorsement of everything they have ever done. It's just a quote.

But to the intelectually stunted, who like to play the guilt-by-association game, it's catnip. They can't help themselves.

No, Brenda, you have clearly aligned yourself with that commie lover Obama. What can you expect from a Canadian, you're all one step away from communism anyway with your legalised gay marriage and decent health care. Pffft.

You won't twist me, sister. I already live in the commie state of Australia, where we have tight gun laws AND a public health system. We have our very own commie PM, who is also female and lives in sin, although she is likely to get turfed at the next election in a very uncommie kind of way. She will be replaced by our Saviour the Abbot who will steer us back into conservative, religious rightness. Yay@

Hey even the commies have discussion boards, no matter how much google and yahoo prune their searches and services to cater to the fearless leaders. Well, I admit, probably not NK.

I'm really curious.

I used to live very close to Canada, the strongest station in my area was CBC radio (Toronto), and the quality of reporting and discussion on public airwaves always blew my mind away. Plus it was interesting to compare and contrast US international reporting v Canadian international reporting. Even back then the political control over US international news reporting was very evident.

And I could be wrong, but I think non-US reporting still has it all over whatever crap we watch here.

I'm wondering if the quality of information affects the level of general discussion.

Oh ok, so I better be serious then.

I don't comment on many political discussion sites over here, although I sometimes comment on newspaper articles. Believe it or not, I find politics so depressing here that I'd prefer to read and discuss American politics, as crazy as it may be, it's not my crazy and generally I don't have to deal with it.

We have some very good news coverage and very, very crap. The best news comes from the ABC and SBS, both government funded. They tend to focus on more serious issues and still do some indepth coverage of stuff. Commercial networks vie for ratings by posting about sport and some sensationalist shit about some bloke who ripped off some grannies once, and car accidents etc.

We have a fair share of morons on the right, mostly on radio and mostly in Sydney.

Admittedly, the last one probably is less aligned with the righties so much as someone who has made money out of their personality disorder.

As for Australian politics, its both nasty and tedious, if you can believe it is possible to be both. I'm pissed off with the left leaning ruling Labor Party because of its embarressing internal fighting and the alternative is the Mad Monk and the Liberals, right leaning and mean. In betwixt is the Greens with a strange combination of contradictory policies and a new leader with the personality of a fish.

Ouch. I feel your pain.

And yet somehow you have a good healthcare system, global warming seems to be on most people's radar, and I don't THINK you have the level of poverty like in the US, or the level of obscene wealth which is the other side of the coin. We have less idiots per square mile, possibly because we have a lower population.

Yes, we have a reasonable public health system, a much better safety net in terms of welfare and less poverty than the US. We managed to avoid the worst effects of the GFC, whether due to good governance or luck I doubt I could really say.

Worst things - we pay pretty high taxes, but I guess we get a lot back. We're overgoverned, too much nanny state stuff, AND Russell Crowe stills calls us home. We all have our crosses to bear.

Isn't it Rappy who's always bitching about people responding not to what was said, but to who said it? He claims people get outraged just because HE said a thing, or voiced an opinion. And then he gets all butthurt because someone used a valid quote from Mao. Hell, Dubya probably had a decent quote about education once in a while, too...

mega-tard. Is that a derogatory remark making fun of the mentally challenged ? Much like Obama's 'special olympics' comment, it seems you folks on the Left delight in using the truly less fortunate among us as the standards by which to ridicule others.

Pretty sad and pathetic, actually.

Also sad, is how the usual suspects ignored that Mao murdered 10's of millions of his own countrymen, women and children, but ALSO the colossal screw up by those running the webpage for who ?

THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION !

So, they can't bother themselves, out of all of the quotes to be found in human history, to find just ONE suitable quote to use ? Sure, fine.

But then they go and butcher the 'quote of the day' message, with that display of brilliance.

Bravo.

Bobby Jindal’s Voucher Schools Teach That Slavery Was Good, and The KKK Are Great Guys

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s voucher schools are teaching Louisiana kids that most slave owners were kind to their slaves, and that the KKK are civic reformers.

Bobby Jindal’s usage of Louisiana as a prop for his 2016 presidential campaign is doing a lot more damage to the state than the rest of the country can ever possibly imagine. However, Jindal’s isn’t just wrecking the state for today. His “school choice” plan is being used by the far right to teach rewritten history and whitewashed racism to the state’s children.

Jindal’s voucher schools will be free to teach lessons like slave owners were pretty good guys, “A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.”—United States History for Christian Schools, 2nd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 1991.”

Louisiana’s kids will also be learning that the KKK is just misunderstood.

In Jindal Land’s classrooms, the KKK is really a reform organization that was concerned with morality, “[The Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians.”—United States History for Christian Schools, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2001″

Their first choice was:

"Universal education is the most corroding and disintegrating poison that liberalism has ever invented for its own destruction."

Isn't that from the Republican party's official platform?

Select to view spoiler:

It's not. It's from Adolf Hitler, whom the right likes to characterize as a lefty-liberal. Odd that he would come out so strongly hating liberalism, huh?

It seems you have a hard time coming up with just ONE suitable cite or source for so much of your own agenda; isn't it hypocritical to harp on others when they do provide quotes?

Oh, I grasp that you have a problem with people citing sources and quotes. I totally get that.

I also get that you are completely unable to do the same for any number of wild-ass claims you make that have no basis in reality.

Really, we get it. It's why just about everybody here has been laughing at you for so long.

You're such a sad, pathetic little child. How does the DOE's own web page , which picks a quote from Mao, then hastily " corrects " that error by first NOT having a 'quote of the day', but then completely butchers the English language in a display of bumbling incompetence.

You're missing at least 3 main points here, ( having a quote from Mao, not finding a replacement quote, then the incoherent sentence, all from the DOE ) all in a weak ass attempt to some how turn this onto a swipe at ME, with utterly baseless claims, having noting remotely to do w/ the original issue.

Does it annoy you that this govt bureaucracy's incompetence is being put on display, for all to see, that you feel the need to lash out at the messenger, while remaining blind to the actual point being made ?

Was your mommy an employee of the DOE ?

A thread about N. Korea has you yammering off about Iraq and Iran. Must be some sort of imaginary ADHD crap in your brain or something.

And a thread about Syria has you yammering about Benghazi and Kurds, before bitching out of the thread entirely and running away because I asked a few questions.

But it's different when you do it, right?

By the way, do you work for the DOE? You regularly mangle sentences and words. And when I say "regularly", I mean once a day or more.

Look at your last post and see if you can find it.

But again, it's different when you do it. It's just a "typo" then, even when you can't figure out when to use "a" or "an" - just a typo that you make with stunning regularity...

How does it WHAT? You started to ask a question, maybe, and then just mashed up a bunch of bumbling incompetence that completely butchers the English language. "How does the DOE's own web page" what?

Can you point out the "utterly baseless claims" you allege?

Then can you point out where they're "noting" to the original issue? (Hey, did you just post another incompetent display of the mangling of the English language?)

Funny, when they do it, it's an "outrage"; when you do it, it's just "an typo". It's cute how you keep making the same typos year after year after year.

No, she was a publisher.

A thread about North Korea has me pointing out recent failings of our government bureaucracy and the push to sell fear and panic in the face of perceived threats from "The Other". I understand that you couldn't make that connection, but do try to keep up, son.
