Nope, I won't stop posting about it; someday they won't be ABLE to ignore reality.

Greenland's glaciers and ice caps are melting to such a degree that they are "significant" contributors to global sea level rise and constitute 20 percent of Greenland's overall mass loss, according to a new study.

The research breaks new ground in measuring the melting dynamic of Greenland's local glaciers separately from its larger ice sheet. It is the first such estimate of the country's glaciers and ice caps by themselves and sets the stage for much better predictions of rising sea levels, the researchers said.

"It is not only Greenland's ice sheet that matters," said Tobias Bolch, a glacier expert at the University of Zurich and lead author of the study published in Geophysical Research Letters. "The glaciers are reacting faster to climate change than the ice sheet."

The scientists were able to pinpoint what is happening with the glaciers because of an unprecedented Greenland glacier inventory completed last year. They compared that information with additional NASA satellite data showing precise measurements of land elevations down to 50 centimeters.

As a result, they could calculate the mass loss of Greenland fueled by melting. Between 2003 and 2008, Greenland glaciers and ice caps contributed about 50 gigatons of water annually to global sea levels, the study says. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=greenlands-glaciers-l

But of course, they no doubt FAKED all that data. And this, too...

The symbolism is enormous, highlighting a changing global climate that has seen temperatures in the Arctic increase by about twice the global average - about 0.8 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times.

But global change is not all about benefits. While summers are warmer, there is less rain. Some experts say that Greenland could soon need irrigation works - ironic for a country of ice and lakes.

"We have had dry summers for the last few years." said Aqqalooraq Frederiksen, a senior agricultural consultant in south Greenland, who said a late spring last year hurt potato crops.

On the Arctic circle, a flash flood last summer from suspected glacier melt water - which some locals here blamed on warm weather - swept away the only bridge connecting Ernst's restaurant to the airport. It came right in the middle of the tourist season, and the restaurant lost thousands of dollars.

It was an ominous reminder that global warming will bring its problems. More at http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=tomatoes-peppers-stra

The most basic thing that gets overlooked as a cause of sea level rise is this: heat. Water changes volume with temperature, contracting as it cools (until it freezes, at which point it expands again), expanding as it warms. Warm water is "bigger" than cool water, less dense. As the water column gains heat, sea levels rise. It's not *just* the melting ice that's raising sea levels, but that's contributing. And of course, as the water heats up and the hotter water rises, it melts ever more ice ever more quickly.

Hell, even the U.S. military marks it as one of their prime concerns for the future, since rising sea levels will change global politics.

But don't worry; the same people who insisted that Iraq was a "grave threat" are now saying that climate change doesn't exist. I'm sure they're bound to be right someday.

Any. Day. Now.
