So tell me again why I'm supposed to be worried about a nuclear-armed Iran posing such a threat?

A standard rappy tactic. Its okay for him to reference other conversations in a thread - but no one else is allowed to.

I disagree with your premise. North Korea poses a direct threat to the United States regardless of its ability to deploy nuclear weapons against targets on the American mainland.

It is unlikely that North Korea would win a war against the United States, but they possess sufficient power to cause extensive damage and massive casualties to South Korean and Japan. This would likely result in massive casualities in a region that is home to tens of thousands of US servicemen and their families and signifigant damage to two of the United States's largest trading partners.

Given that North Korea has been preparing for decades to wage an unconventional war, it is possible that there could be direct military strikes on US soil by special forces. North Korea has some of the best trained special forces in the world and they have a LOT of them. Most will be used against South Korea, but a smart North Korean general might just figure out that a special forces unit attacking civilian targets in Alaska or Washington State might have more of an impact on America then just attacking an airfield or port in South Korea (a he might note that he's already got more then enough guys to hit the Southies, why not use them somewhere else).

Oh, and how hard would it be to stick a nuclear bomb onto a cargo ship or sub and sail to Hawaii, Anchorage, or Seattle? Me, I'd go cargo ship...maybe one from a neutral South American country...like Chile. Nobody suspects Chile...
Quote:

So tell me again why I'm supposed to be worried about a nuclear-armed Iran posing such a threat?

A nuclear armed Iran could threaten Isreal and American economic interests in the Gulf. I don't know if you've looked at a map, but we get a lot of oil from countries like Quatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait and if you noticed they're not that big. A handful of nuclear bombs...four, maybe five and employed in the right spots could bring the world to its knees in a single afternoon.

I just spent another three paragraphs outlining a dozen attacks that would be inexpensive in manpower and money that could emotionally cripple this country without ever threatening a hardened target. I erased them because they were too good and I became concerned. I've always said the terrorists overthink their plans...even 9/11 only worked because it all came together perfectly. They had fifteen guys, imagine what you could do with fifteen guys, no rules, and a real understanding of this country and you'll see my point. The biggest threat is not terrorists hitting New York or Washington...its when they realize they don't have to hit New York or Washington. After all...look what one crazy guy with a gun can do at an elementary school.

Now he wants to bump the thread, seemingly to gather more traffic, more people to witness his ignorance on full display.

If you agree that North Korea poses no serious threat to the U.S., then why do you call it "ignorance" when I point that out? You clearly agree with my assessment; is it just because *I* was the one saying it that you felt the need to reflexively disagree?

Per usual, you keep asking me about things for which I never claimed you said in the first place. Those were MY words, in reference to your short sighted view.

Your initial point, as I read it, was that 'since NK poses no real threat to the U.S., then, there's no real story here. Nothing to worry about.' By ONLY remarking that there's no threat to the U.S., should we let NK just continue on its merry, and think nothing of it ? OR, might we think of the consequences of a nuclear NK , lead by the Kim Jong Un, and how it may impact the region ?

I guess that's my point.

Seems to me you're just itchin' to fabricate yet another fight with which to engage me in, for no real reason, what so ever.

PS - Oh, and the claim by NK that it could take the USA down, militarily, in a 3 day war, no less, kinda makes it relevant to us, doesn't it ?

Rap started OUT snarking at the threat, but then Hero gave him fodder to get all huffy and take the other side, so he could snark at YOU for snarking about N.K. like he did in the beginning. You have to pay attention, y'see, to watch his mind at work.

...if you give a shit, of course, which I don't, I just sat here laughing at his turnaround. And he takes NK's "three days" seriously, which is even funnier...

One small problem Niki, that's not what happened at all.

Go back and re-read the thread.

I FIRST snarked at the alert status, , and not the nuke threat. THEN Kwickie made his short sighted " can we all agree " remark about NK w / regards to the USA, to which I replied about ignorance being blissful for Kwickie.

My remarks were independent to anything Hero posted.

Do you guess, or do you KNOW? If you aren't even sure what your own point is, don't go guessing at mine. You call my view "short sighted", and base that on... what, exactly? Did I say something that is untrue? If so, show me. If not, quit trying to pick a fight over what you THINK I said, or what you THINK I *might* have meant, or what you believe I said "as you read it". If you have a hard time understanding exactly what I said, ask; don't guess, don't assume. Ask.

Yeah, I came traipsing into your thread and called you ignorant because you posted something that I agreed with. Right?

Quote:

PS - Oh, and the claim by NK that it could take the USA down, militarily, in a 3 day war, no less, kinda makes it relevant to us, doesn't it ?

Yeah, and I've heard that claim before, from Iraq, from Iran, from *US* regarding both those places... And again, I find it to be every bit as imminent and grave a threat coming from North Korea as I did when it came from Iran or Iraq. Less, actually, since North Korea really has no means of carrying out an offensive war against the United States. If they launched every nuclear weapon they have at, say, Nevada, that would result in Nevada being hit with about one-twentieth of what we ourselves have hit it with over the years.

Given what we know about their delivery systems, I'm not confident they could even target an area as big as Nevada, much less narrow it down to a specific city or military base.

So no, I still don't consider North Korea a realistic threat to us. Clearly you are more concerned about their "Class A" alert status than you let on; maybe you'd like us to go to DefCon Three, or some other super-secret ridiculous status, like orangey-red.

"...should we let NK just continue on its merry, and think nothing of it ? OR, might we think of the consequences of a nuclear NK , lead by the Kim Jong Un, and how it may impact the region ?"

Are those our only two options? You're showing distinct signs of constricted, inside-the-box thinking again. Should we let them continue on their merry? Sure, within bounds and reason; we have strong sanctions against North Korea at the moment, and the UN have authorized stronger sanctions against them. I know you hate the UN, but the wider world does have a say in some of this. U.S. sanctions alone, for instance, haven't really done much harm to many of the places they are in place against (Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, for instance); to make an impact, we need cooperation from places that might otherwise just ignore our sanctions and use them as an opportunity to strengthen their own ties with North Korea (China, Iran, Russia, for instance).

*Might* we think of the consequences of a nuclear North Korea? Well, they've been nuclear since the Bush years, so I'd say any time we think of North Korea at all, it's as a nuclear North Korea.

Is Kim Jong Un this week's bogeyman? I always heard the last guy was just plain cray-cray, and might go off at any second, but I heard that about his dad, too, and about his dad's predecessor as well. When you keep holding up someone as being a crazed despot, that description starts to lose all meaning when they don't behave as you expect them to.

Or are you trying to warn me that the smoking gun is going to be a mushroom cloud? Because I've heard that one too many times to take seriously, too. It wasn't true then, and it's not any more true now.

So no, I don't lose any sleep over a nuclear North Korea with "the Kim Jong Un" as its leader.

It seems you definitely are losing sleep over it, though. But that's only because the Right-Wing Fear Machine™ has told you to.

That might be the first true thing "Hero" has posted in months. It is unlikely that North Korea would win a war against us. It is also highly unlikely that either side would win such a war in three days. We laugh at them for saying it, but we make the same kinds of stupid statements ourselves pretty regularly.

If you aren't prepared to spend ten years and three to four trillion dollars on a war with North Korea, then don't start one. You have far more to lose than they do, I guarantee it.

I remember the "bomb them back to the stone ages", but unfortunately, we came pretty close to doing just that, but the rest...must have been a McCain candidacy speech or something (like "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran"...), 'cuz I sure don't recall hearing any SENSIBLE politician or government figure saying we could do it in three days.

Well, there was Bush, Cheney, Rummy, etc., and our bloody politicians BOUGHT it (or were blackmailed into it, in some cases), but we've been through that one...

Tho' let's not forget our own Congresswoman, Barbara Boxer, AND California Senator Lynn Woolsey, both voted AGAINST the Iraq War. That's two out of three of my representatives, and I'm grateful.

Given what we know about their delivery systems, I'm not confident they could even target an area as big as Nevada, much less narrow it down to a specific city or military base.

What DO we know, exactly, about their delivery system? Whose intel are we relying on for this ? Because our intel gathering was bad for Iraq, but now it's suddenly all up to speed and accurate ?

What do we know? That in observed actual real-world tests, they haven't worked, at all. I have this funny tendency to give more credence to things we can actually observe than to things we're told by people with an eye on selling us an agenda. We've watched North Korea launch missiles, and watched them fail to do much of anything. We've also observed their nuclear detonations, and observed that they have a marked tendency to fizzle rather than go "BOOM!"

I tend not to pay a lot of heed to our intel services, because they have a bad habit of missing the big stuff, focusing on the little stuff, and getting most everything very badly wrong.

Quote:

Quote:

So no, I still don't consider North Korea a realistic threat to us

So, that's what it comes down to, " US ", huh? You keep focusing in on that specific issue. And if NK is a threat to Japan ? S. Korea ? Australia ? Anyone ? No one ? Are we caring about this ?

That's my question.

And the operative word is "if". *IF* North Korea is a threat... Nobody has established that North Korea is a threat. *IF* Saddam had active WMD programs... *IF* Saddam had nuclear weapons... *IF* can make quite a world of difference, can't it?

Quote:

From your tone, it appears to me that you're some what of an isolationist. Accurate or no ?

"Somewhat". There are things we should be concerned with, and things we shouldn't. And every single thing we concern ourselves with costs us money. If we can't afford education and healthcare for our own citizens, I'm fair certain we can't afford to act as the military protector for the rest of the world's people.

They can take care of themselves, right? If you're willing to let Americans fend for themselves, why not Japanese, or Koreans, or Australians?

Before we go trampling someone else's garden, we should tend to our own.

As we've already seen, when it comes to responding to me, you're NOT responding to "the words on the screen", but rather what you thought I meant, as you said, "as I read it". You said it SEEMED like I was saying this or that, that you read it that way, so clearly you were not responding to the words on the screen; you were responding to the words that were very specifically NOT on the screen. And if they're not on the screen, and if I haven't said them, then you must have pulled them out of somewhere. Maybe I was wrong in thinking you pulled them out of your head; they may have come from your ass, which while not your head, is still head-adjacent, since your head is up your ass about 99% of the time you're here.

Oh hell yeah, our government does! How can you forget gems like these?

"We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat." –Rumsfeld on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction

"Five days or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last longer." - Rumsfeld on how long the Iraq War would last.

"... something under $50 billion for the cost. How much of that would be the U.S. burden, and how much would be other countries, is an open question.” - Rummy on the cost of the Iraq War.

"Liberating Iraq would be a cakewalk." - Ken Adelman, member of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board.

"My belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators. . . . I think it will go relatively quickly, . . . [in] weeks rather than months." - Dick Cheney, Vice President of the U.S.

"My fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended." Under the banner "Mission Accomplished." - Dubya Bush, May 1, 2003.

"Two days ahead of schedule, the world witnessed the arrival of a free and sovereign Iraq." - Dick Cheney, 2004.

Shall I continue? Our government routinely makes the same kinds of overblown, over-ambitious, overly optimistic predictions, and is routinely wrong about them. It's like clockwork; you can count on it.

It's what we've SEEN, yes. But as was the case with our own rockets, we learn, even while making mistakes. Maybe they can, or not. Evidence of past failures isn't proof they'll always fail.

NK certainly is threatening, whether or not it actually IS a threat.

I didn't say you did. I asked where we agreed , as shown in this thread, as you claimed.

Didn't see you even TRY to answer that one.

I at least gave you the courtesy of some wiggle room, as your comments were a bit incomplete. Asking if we can agree that NK is not a threat to the U.S.A. , and then just leaving the matter to rest on that sole issue, doesn't address the matter at hand. As I've stated before, they could hurt our interests, while not landing 1 nuke on US soil.

But that's not even an idea that you seem to even want to entertain, is it ? Your simplistic

" Is NK at direct threat - Y ? N ? " now, let's move on

... attitude is to what I was referring.

That's true of quite a few countries, isn't it?

Israel has hurt out interests several times without ever using nukes.

In fact, no country in history has ever hurt our interests by using nukes, except us.

Pakistan has hurt our interests in the past - should we be mobilizing for war with Pakistan?

Ditto Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Mexico, Japan, China, etc., etc.

Still not seeing any existential threat to the U.S. here.

I heard all this in the run-up to the Iraq War, too. Remember those vaunted Republican Guards and how bad-ass they were supposed to be?

Remember how Saddam had one of the largest armies in the world?

Except is was a bunch of conscripts who had no interest in fighting...

I saw that, and have been laughing most of the morning already on facebook about it. Austin seems to be just going about its business today. Nobody seems to be panicking here, but I'm sure Rick Perry will give a rousing speech - if he can remember three things he wants to say, that is - and try to get everybody all in a lather about it. Maybe he'll threaten to secede some more; that's always fun, when your governor reminds the rest of the country why your state is 49th in the nation in education. :/
