1) The Enlightenment brought us what’s known as the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Two things of which it’s not hard to imagine Nance is a “fan”? The Enlightenment inspired people like Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine to reject the supernatural aspects of religion in favor of a reconciliation of science with their faith in some sort of creator — something called “deism.” This was all part of a greater overall shift towards liberty, republicanism, and religious tolerance. Ugh, hate that stuff so much.

2) Scientific progress and the betterment of life for the millions of humans on earth was dependent on the curiosities that arose from the “Age of Reason.” Without that era of mankind, you likely wouldn’t have had things like the steam engine, electricity, modern medical procedures, life-saving vaccinations, etc.

3) All of that godless scientific progress liberated much of mankind from a life of squalor. And those effects are still being felt today. Before Enlightenment, the majority of mankind lived in filthy conditions that represented a flat-lined graph of health/prosperity for centuries beyond centuries. And then something magical happened: SCIENCE. To wit, compare the “wealth and health” of all nations in 1800 versus today:

Ugh, reason and science and stuff. Always leading to vast improvements in life expectancy and prosperity.

3) Literacy. The Age of Enlightenment and the curiosities it inspired led to a consumer demand for things called books — you know, those things that people read that often isn’t just The Bible. As a result of this new consumer demand, rapid expansions in book-printing technology led to astounding increases in something called literacy.

Throughout the developed world, millions of children began to read at an early age; newspapers, magazines, and books became widely available for the first time in history, leading to cultural developments and more open societies. But I don't think Wulf would be right there volunteering; egging them on, certainly, and trying to take credit if he could find a way. But actually taking part? I highly doubt it; he's not into getting involved in the process to improve it LIKE SOME OF US, he's bigger on fantasy and pretend.

Everybody says they need a better candidate, or they need a better message but — in my opinion — the Republicans have an inmate problem.” The political obsessions of the Republican base — from denying global warming to defending assault weapons to opposing any tax increases under any conditions, to resisting any immigration reform — are making it impossible to be a Republican moderate, said Carville. And without more Republican moderates, there is no way to strike the kind of centrist bargains that have been at the heart of American progress — that got us where we are and are essential for where we need to go.

Republican politicians today have a choice: either change your base by educating and leading G.O.P. voters back to the center-right from the far right, or start a new party that is more inclusive, focused on smaller but smarter government and market-based, fact-based solutions to our biggest problems.

But if Republicans continue to be led around by, and live in fear of, a base that denies global warming after Hurricane Sandy and refuses to ban assault weapons after Sandy Hook — a base that would rather see every American’s taxes rise rather than increase taxes on millionaires — the party has no future. It can’t win with a base that is at war with math, physics, human biology, economics and common-sense gun laws all at the same time.

Do you know how troubled this party is? Two weeks ago, the former G.O.P. Senate majority leader Bob Dole, a great American, went to the Senate floor in his wheelchair to show his support for Senate ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of People With Disabilities. Nevertheless, the bill failed to win the two-thirds needed for ratification, because only eight Republicans dared to join Democrats in support of the treaty, which was negotiated and signed by George W. Bush! It essentially requires other countries to improve to our level of protection for the disabled, without requiring us to change any laws. It has already been ratified by 126 countries. But it failed in the Senate because Rick Santorum managed to convince the G.O.P. base that the treaty would threaten U.S. “sovereignty.” Santorum stopped just short of warning that space aliens would take over our country if we ratified the treaty.

Because they control the House, this radical Republican base is now holding us all back. President Obama was moving to the center in these budget negotiations. He reduced his demand for higher tax revenues to $1.2 trillion from $1.6 trillion; he upped the level at which Americans who would be hit with higher taxes to those earning $400,000 a year from $250,000; and he made his own base holler by offering to cut long-term spending by lowering the inflation adjustment index for Social Security. It seemed that with a little more Republican compromise, Obama would have met them in the middle, and we could have had a grand bargain that would put the country on a sounder fiscal trajectory and signal to the markets, the world and ourselves that we can still do big hard things together. That will have to wait. Now the best hope is some mini-, crisis-averting, Band-Aid.

The G.O.P. today needs its own D.L.C. The Democratic Leadership Council was founded by a group of Democratic governors and activists, led by Bill Clinton, in 1985 to lead the party back to the center from a failing leftward course that had resulted in it being repeatedly shut out of the presidency, except after Watergate. I asked Clinton’s pollster, Stan Greenberg, what Republicans could learn from the Clinton/D.L.C. experience.

“There is a lot of pain,” said Greenberg. “You can’t change the party without pain. You can’t just make some head-fakes to Hispanics.” The D.L.C., he noted, started by building an organization over 10 years and by running more centrist Democrats “in the primaries.” It didn’t just wait to pivot to the center in the general election. It fought for and educated the Democrat base in the primaries, by D.L.C. candidates running in support of free trade, Nafta and welfare reform. “With Clinton, we won the primaries in a way that defined us, so that he could run in the general election as the candidate of broad appeal.” That fractured the party and produced Ralph Nader, which cost Al Gore the 2000 election. But after losing that election, said Greenberg, the Democrats came together around a moderate-left core and did not engage “in dysfunctional primaries.”

Republicans need to go through a similar process of building new institutions and coalitions to support candidates who can move the party back to the center-right. Today, all their institutions, from think tanks to Fox TV, said Greenberg, “are reinforcing the trends that are marginalizing their party.”

I think they covered it pretty well. Asshats like Rap and Wulf are what's destroying the Republican Party, and intelligent Republicans know it. Wulf lives in his own fantasy land, and obviously he and his ilk don't listen to the news, where REPUBLICANS themselves have been decrying their shrinking numbers. Which is fine; I sincerely hope they stay in their fantasy land until it's too late. The more they encourage the crazies, the faster it will happen.

But I'm afraid we're going to have to wait some years yet for that to happen, and at this point nobody can say if the second viable party will be Republican, the way things are going...

My bad Mark... I see where your math comes in now.....

So... when I was all about overthrowing the government years before you started posting here, (well after Clinton was prez, and well before Obama thrust us further down the rabbit hole GWB created) what percentage of what demographic was I back then?

I still disagreed with 70% of the liberal talking points, but I was more concerned with all of the egregious raping of individual rights that were taking place at the time than who was killing their baby.

Hell... to this day, I support your right to kill your unborn baby. I support your right to bury the last known seed to your family linage deep within a male buttox.


I just have two favors to ask.....

The first is from our Government....... Stay the fuck out of our business.

Republican Rep. Stella Tremblay Questions Legitimacy Of Boston Bombing Victim’s Loss Of Both Legs

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing last month, New Hampshire Republican state Rep. Stella Tremblay pushed a crazy conspiracy theory alleging that the federal government orchestrated the horrific attack that left three people dead and dozens injured. She made the claim in a post on Glenn Beck’s Facebook page.

That lunacy wasn’t enough for Tremblay, however. Despite being condemned by her own party and being called upon to resign by constituents, Tremblay appeared on a right-wing radio show this week and dared to question the legitimacy of a reaction to injuries suffered by a victim of the bombing. The Union Leader reports that Tremblay attacked Jeff Bauman, a victim who lost both of his legs in the tragic terrorist attack and heroically made an effort to talk to the FBI about the suspects despite his devastating injury.

I looked and I thought, there’s something. … I don’t know what’s wrong, but it seems surreal to me. I talked to my sister, who’s not into politics at all, and she said, ‘Yes, I saw the same thing.’ He was not in shock. He was not in pain. If I had had those type of injuries, I’d be screaming in agony.”

Tremblay based her theory on a photograph of the carnage, and apparently it didn’t dawn on her that everyone reacts differently to pain, stress, and shock during traumatic events and that a picture represents only a snapshot, a fraction of a second in time.

Now Tremblay is facing even more backlash from constituents and the New Hampshire Republican Party.

State Republican Chair Jennifer Horn condemned Tremblay’s words, saying:

She is unfit to serve in public office, and as a result she has been banned from receiving any support from the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.”

Of course, no active Republican has yet to call for Tremblay to resign, which drew a condemnation from the state Democratic Party, but former state GOP Chairmen are doing what active Republicans lack the courage to do.

According to the Union Leader, “Former state GOP Chair Steve Dupree posted on his Facebook page shortly after Tremblay’s remarks on Bauman that she is a, “nutcase,” and should resign immediately. “She is a disgrace to not only the Republican Party of New Hampshire but to all decent people,” Dupree said. Fergus Cullen, also a former state GOP chair, responded to Dupree’s Facebook post by saying, “Thanks for speaking publicly Steve. The crazies have been killing our brand and, until recently, too many GOP leaders in positions of responsibility were turning a deaf ear to it. This is a necessary first step toward re-earning trust from voters.”

Cullen is absolutely correct. Crazy conservatives have all but taken over the Republican in the last few years and if Republicans want to be seen positively be voters in future elections they’d be better off excommunicating the crazies from the party entirely and permanently. But that’s a decision for currently serving Republicans to make and if they are too cowardly to do so, the voters likely will not be so timid to do the responsible thing for them and not only punish nutty Republicans, but also the ones who refused to ouster insanity when they had the chance.

While Starnes did cite the area newspaper, The Poughkeepsie Journal, in his post, he choose to add more lurid detail about the alleged lesbian kiss. Also, while The Journal talked about the entire workshop as a whole, Starnes chose to take the "they didn't even notify the parents" route, thereby playing up a semantical tone that the school was trying to "indoctrinate" students.

On Monday of last week, the district sent Starnes an email asking that he update his story with correct information. It is not known whether or not Starnes chose to update his story but now the school district has to deal with what it calls "hostile and hateful emails" from many who don't even live in the area. How noble of him to come out when he's retired. At least, that's what I assume the article meant since it said "retread" in the first sentence.

I'm not huge on basketball today like I was in my late teens and early 20's but this guy never hit my radar. I can't blame a guy who would never have the income from a lucrative deal with Nike to bide his time. It's really hard to let go of that massive league minimum pay for any reason.

I hope he enjoys that fifteen minutes of fame he never got by being anything more than a below average NBA bench warmer.

I'd love to see the follow up to this story in 2017....

I wonder if Michelle will still take his calls when they've both been cast out of the limelight and are forced to remember what it's like to be just a normal person once again....

Hey, Niki, this is why we don't need Obamacare. Good Republicans can make medical diagnoses without seeing the patients at all, just by looking at a picture. The story doesn't even indicate that she's an M.D., I don't think-- I didn't read it all, just her comments. So Repubs don't even have to go to medical school to be better than doctors.

Reminds me of the Terry Schiavo case-- Republican Congressmen claimed to be able to make better diagnoses by watching video tapes 1000 miles away, than doctors on the scene.

The one thing I remember about shock from first aid training, is that it's unpredictable, it can manifest itself by almost any symptom, hot, cold, redness, paleness, just about any behavior. However any person reacts to any injury IS EXACTLY how they react to it, but there's always a reaction, that must be watched for and dealt with. That's why you send EVERYBODY to the hospital, so they can be evaluated by multiple PROFESSIONALS, over a period of time. And anybody who's lost a leg or legs, traumatically, will, ipso facto, be suffering from shock.

E-T-A: Well, DUH! on me again. The reporter wrote almost exactly what I wrote in that last paragraph, in the bottom half of his story. I need to read complete posts, not just get mad halfway through...

As to “… harm(ing) their relationship with God” goes, who is Bishop Tobin to say that? Yes, I realize that the Catholic church sees men like Tobin as intercessors between God and the members of their church but Martin Luther had a thing or two to say about that several hundred years ago. As far as the theory of intercession goes, I’m with him. Every person’s relationship with God (however they see Him/Her/It) is personal, everyone has their own relationship with the Divine. Every person should be able to decide what weddings they want to attend and base that on their own understanding of God. Perhaps people who do decide to attend same-sex weddings will be thinking of Jesus’ command to love one another instead of trying to find ways to hate others. As I explained in another thread; we ARE in the middle, almost all of us on the side of SOME gun control. Those on the other side hate us, revile us, constantly claim we want to take away EVERYONE's guns, do away with the Second Amendment, and on and on. That's why "debate" here on the subject has become impossible, and why I post my disclaimer, because anyone in favor of ANY kind of curb on guns, in any form, is considered a flat-out liar who wants to confiscate ALL guns. Where does that allow civil debate?

If you wanted to take the time to look back, you could see where the "discussion" used to be attempted, repeatedly; now I just post material to bring it to people's attention; I know what the response will be, and I think the other moderates like me have given up trying too.

To me it is one issue among many, but being called a liar, vilified and lied ABOUT, by someone here I once considered a friend taught me how impossible this is to discuss, even moreso than politics or religion, so now I just offer news and comment.

Reminder: I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE AWAY ANYONE'S GUNS, remember? I argue for SOME logical restrictions to the number of guns out there and who is allowed to have them. And I certainly argue against children having guns of ANY kind!

I'm definitely not moderate when it comes to any number of other issues, but on the issue of guns; we have guns in the house, I have shot guns, my husband owns several, and I don't want to take away anyone's guns, despite Geezer's attempts to split hairs and his need to even specifically misquote me to do so. Which hair splitting, by the way, is a perfect example of what we get from the pro-gun folk, for whom it is a simple case of "all or nothing, period". He's actually wrong even there; I ARGUE against children having guns; I don't want to take away any currently-owned guns, I want to stop MARKETING guns to children.

But of course, that means nothing to our pro-gun posters.

Niki. When you argue against children having guns, it seems only reasonable to think you don't want children to have guns. If they already have guns and you don't want them to have guns, the only way to get what you want is to take the guns away.

Geezer, I don't recall those suggestions coming from you; it may have been a while ago and I may have forgotten. If so, I was wrong. I certainly have no recollection of you or anyone else being in favor of any form of expanded background checks; if any of you are, that's welcome news.

Perhaps you could ASK before assuming; many people own guns today which have been made illegal, do they not? Is there not some form or other of "grandfathering", or somesuch, which allows people to keep things which have later been made illegal to possess? There are ways to deal with the issue of children and guns...ignoring the mere fact that my not "wanting" something does not necessarily mean I am always in favor of making LAWS against something or CONFISCATING something. There are other ways of preventing things than going to someone's house, confiscating something and making them to be criminals... If we could make an effort to recognize such things, communication might be possible. Just an idea.
