Ahhh yes. The White House Summer Music series is in full swing.

Joy.

Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that WhiteHouse Tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule affected tours. We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular Spring touring season. Please check this webpage for updates regarding this situation, or contact the White House Visitors Office 24 Hour Hotline at (202) 456-7041.

Sincerely,

Meanwhile, in the George Bush White House ...
Quote:

Social Events at the White House

The President and Mrs. Laura Bush Hosted More Than 1,500 Official White House Social Events

The President and Mrs. Bush have been honored to serve as host and hostess of a variety of events at the White House, ranging from private gatherings in the Residence to state dinners for world leaders.

Entertaining At The White House

Welcoming His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the White House on April 16, 2008 was one of the First Couple's most significant and cherished events. His Holiness celebrated his 81st birthday during an arrival ceremony on the South Lawn and was serenaded with "Happy Birthday" by over 13,000 guests, the largest crowd on record at the White House. It was the first papal visit to the White House in three decades. Following the welcoming ceremony, the President hosted a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in the Oval Office.

And yada yada yada.... 1500 social events, they say??? That's (hmmm... let me do the math) 1500 over eight years, or 187 every year, or... one event every other day.

http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/firstlady/arts-social.html

That's quite a schedule!

---------------

Yanno, it seems to me that with all of the important and fair criticism that one could aim at the Obama administration, this is stooping to petty, irrelevant stuff.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Was the argument about the number of Bush WH events false? Was the number wrong? Were these not social events? Was he not president? What part of the argument doesn't apply? Spell it out.

And let me point out that I have yet to read a rightard argument that has both facts and logic. But what they DO have is a healthy dose of mendacity.

So, how about addressing Bush's failures.

"Reporters analyzing Bush’s record found that he took off 1,020 days in two four-year terms—more than one out of every three days. No other modern president comes close. Bush also set the record for the longest vacation among modern presidents—five weeks, the Washington Post noted."

Well, with one out of every three days on vacation (973), and one out of every two days attending soirees (1500), and 63 of those left over days as weekend days, that leaves 384 working days out of 8 years. Which parts of 9/11, the Afghanistan War, the Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina and the other 421 declared major disasters, and the financial meltdown starting with Bear-Sterns do you think he covered with those 384 days?

I care, but I'm just funny that way.

What makes you think I hate Obama? I don't even know the man. I don't like his policies. I don't like his relentless demagoguery and campaign speeches. I don't like his smarmy condescension. And I don't trust him. If that adds up to "hate" in your book so be it.

eta. But I can tell you this. If I ever had a chance to meet him face to face, you know what I'd say? "It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. President. Keep up the good work." What would you have said to Bush?

You also apparently hate his taste in music, and whole bunch of other irrelevant things, like the way he sticks his nose up in the air and the professorial way he "ums" and "uhs" his way through a speech, and the fact that he plays golf and vacations in Hawaii. In other words, yes, you hate the man (what little you know of him). In fact, your deep and abiding hatred and distrust of the man speaks of a deep fear, a fear so deep that you want to stomp him out of existance.

And yet, curiously, you trusted another man who did much the same policy things as Obama (Bush). In fact, you really don't hate Obama policies AT ALL. The ONLY thing you hate is the man. Just like you hate "libruls". At least, that is what I get out of your posts.

Well, I think I hit a nerve. Jongsstraw, I assume that the "Obama" things which irritate the shit out of me irritate the shit out of you, too, especially the nose up in the air. The guy's an asshole. And, no, I don't trust him either. I didn't vote for him and I urged others not to vote for him either.

But I try not to get TOO distracted by petty personal stuff. Right now, the human race is in danger of extinction. An infinitesimally tiny number of people are driving the entire world's economy into the shitter. There are over 10,000 nukes ready to go off, including the pre-planted dirty bombs we call nuclear reactors. Given all that, I think there are an awful lot more important things to focus on besides Obama's taste in music.

As Captain Jean-Luc Picard said in 'Up The Long Ladder': "Sometimes, Number One... you just have to... bow to the absurd."

That's why I make cracks about Obama and Carol King and Lulu. That's why I put up tongue-in-cheek threads like this. That's why I was more critical of Bush during those years than any other Conservative on this board. It can't be 100% serious 100% of the time. That would not only be very boring, it could be psychologically dangerous. Just look at yourself. All worked up, over what? Nothing.
