We won’t really know how Obamacare works until it has been in operation for a while; but we do know that essentially the same system has been running in Massachusetts since 2006, and is doing pretty well. The question, then, is whether other states that don’t have MA’s initial advantages — especially an already low uninsurance rate and an already operating system of community rating — can make this thing work. The big fear has been of sharply rising premiums as insurers are required to cover people with preexisting conditions. And the biggest test case was always going to be California.

Well, the preliminary numbers for CA are in — and they’re looking very good, with costs coming in below expectations. At this point, it looks as if this thing is indeed going to work.

And think about the political dynamics. Because the Supreme Court decided to let states opt out of the Medicaid expansion, some states — notably Texas — will have a pretty dysfunctional version of Obamacare in 2014, although even those systems will provide significant benefits to many people. Still, the whole political calculus was supposed to be that Republicans in red states could point to the horrors of Obamacare and ride them to political victory. Instead, it looks as if we’re going to see blue-state residents reaping the benefits of a functional health care system, while red-state residents are denied many of those benefits, for what looks like no better reason than mean-spirited spite — because what’s going on is, indeed, mean-spirited spite.

Predictions that Obamacare will be a big political issue are probably right — but not in the way gleeful conservatives imagined.

It's not as good as universal, but it's a step in the right direction. It's also not an insurance company's dream. If it were, they wouldn't have spent 850 million trying to stop it.

Once people start seeing the benefits, it'll help us move towards a socialized system, like the rest of the first world.

I think undoubtedly it will be an improvement on the old system.

The right for all their efforts have not succeeded in derailing Obamacare, they have only succeeded in setting the bar for it ridiculously low. People will find that it's far from the disaster that the right has prophesied, and be pleasantly surprised by its positive effects. The right will never accept it of course, but by continuing their shrill protests they will simply become ever more irrelevant. That's my prediction anyway.

It's not personal. It's just war.

I'm not so sure, KPO. I agree with most of what you and Fan have written, but this new thing, that employers are providing "minimum" health insurance that doesn't cover catastrophic medical care, is worrying...as are a few other things.

I was hoping it would be like Social Security and Medicare, a "bad" first step which we would polish along the line, as they did with them, to make something viable. Right now, it looks like this may not improve things much; the insurance companies seem to be the only ones REALLY profiting. And yes, I know it was made that way because that was the ONLY possible way, given the power of the lobbyists and the refusal of the right. But they'll continue to chip away at it, and I'm sure there are more loopholes and games hidden in there. My only hope now is that it'll be so bad it will bring single payer quicker, but I fear a lot of bad stuff in between.

If ONLY the right had worked WITH instead of having absolutely everything invested in NOT improving our healthcare system. It sickens me.

Imagine how much better it would be if they'd work with Obama on anything.

I have--well, I USED to...I gave that up long ago. It's patently obvious now that the entire focus is "oppose Obama"; the country and its people have sunk to at LEAST #3 on their priorities, after that first one and "get re-elected"...which also translates as "keep the base happy" and "raise money". So we're finishing a very distant last in the minds of those "representatives", a fact which should sicken everyone, but apparently doesn't.

I weep for my country.
