NEW YORK -- A finger-pointing political argument on Fox News Channel boiled over when a male conservative talk show host shouted at a woman to "know your role and shut your mouth."

The man, Bill Cunningham, later asked the Fox contributor, "Are you going to cry?"

Fox on-air personalities on Friday were talking about the exchange on Sean Hannity's prime-time show the night before.Commentator Juan Williams concluded that Cunningham "obliterated the line" of civil discourse in his argument with Holder. The two had been brought on by Hannity to discuss whether Attorney General Eric Holder -- no relation to Tamara -- had committed perjury.

Cunningham, sitting next to Tamara Holder in a New York studio, said she had the "incurable fatal condition of liberalism that caused people like Eric Holder to be the consulary of Barack Hussein Obama."

He was jabbing a finger at Holder, who returned the favor.

"I really hope that when you speak to a judge, you don't point your finger in the person's face the entire time," she said. "Your finger does not make your point."

Cunningham is a former assistant attorney general in Ohio whose wife is on the Ohio Court of Appeals. He hosts radio and television talk shows.

"You shut up!" Cunningham said. "Know your role and shut your mouth."

After Holder paused, Cunningham asked, "What, are you going to cry?"

"No, I'm not going to cry," Holder said.

Things were still smoldering on Friday when Fox returned to the argument. Daytime host Martha McCollum hosted a segment with Williams and Fox contributor Mary Katherine Ham on whether the combatants had gone too far.

"The merits of the argument might be on the Cunningham side," Ham said, "but I'm on Team Tamara on the comment of knowing your role

Cunningham could not be reached for comment Friday.

It was only three weeks after another exchange on Fox, where daytime host Megyn Kelly said she was offended by a male colleague's suggestion that children of working mothers don't fare as well as children with stay-at-home moms. One Fox contributor, Erick Erickson, said that in nature, males were traditionally dominant. http://www.syracuse.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2013/06/fox_news_chann

Interestingly, the women on FauxNews have been quite vocal lately about calling out sexism. I see it as a promising trend.

I'm not sure there's ever really been civil discourse. There was a period of time when puritanical moralists thought that people needed to be protected from reality and censored the bejesus out of everything. And that could make it SEEM more civil. But I'm pretty sure people swore and made horrible insults and slander 50 years ago in that same rose tinted golden age of civility, and they were also a lot more racist, sexist, and homophobic.

These throwbacks to those times are just scrambling for purchase in an unfamiliar social terrain. Remember, every person on the radio who tells a woman to know her place, just think that what he said would have been widely accepted not so long ago.

I know what you are saying is true on one level, and I'm not normally rose coloured about the past for all the reasons you have mentioned, but I do think that even within my memory, that tolerance for bad behaviour of public figures has increased.

While I agree,
Quote:

I think part of what's behind them whipping themselves into such a frenzy is partly the fact that what they believed/practiced/said in the past ISN'T as acceptable anymore...that thing about someone acting out worst just before they grow. Maybe I'm just clinging to that thought, but it seems that as we progress, those whose views are left behind act out WORSE in some cases. Maybe it's the ones who can't change with the times, so they lash out, which thankfully in some cases at least gets them out of positions of authority or power. But it strikes me as interesting that, while Bush was in office and supposedly the "religious right" had an ear to power, they weren't as blatant as now, when their sexism/racism/etc., is rejected more and more by the society at large.

Certainly, radio personalities "swore and made horrible insults and slander 50 years ago"--and more--and TV censored stuff more back then, both are true. Maybe in the age of the internet, when some throwaway comment can gain an immediate and huge audience, plays into it as well. It seems to ME as well that politics, in particular, has become more vituperative, but I know I looked it up a long time ago and some of what was said by our politicians, throughout the history of our country, was just as bad or worse--and some of it, incredibly personal! So is it perception, actual change, backlash, less censorship, the global village, or some combination of them all?

Heck, Mike, our hard-core right wingers won't make a peep. It was a male conservative talk show host on FauxNews, for heaven's sake; they don't diss such people, they DEFEND them, or at the very least, EXCUSE them (or even AGREE with them, like our resident troll-freak). Silly boy...

Tamara Holder is a nice person. I've seen her hundreds of times on Fox. She makes a lot of money as a Fox contributor. She knows the waters aren't always friendly. She plays her part, knowing that sometimes things get a little crazy. No one is twisting her arm to appear. She's a fighter and she's fearless. She also takes a lot of crap on her own radio program. She's a pro.

So, you think it's up to her to be a pro, but not up to the people on FAUX to equally be pros. In fact you excuse it b/c it's 'unfriendly' ground, and part of how THEY roll to just 'get a little cracy'.

Assuming that you meant an insult to masculinity or something:

*teacher mode* Originally, pink was the color associated with males, because pink was also closer to red and therefore bloodshed. It was blue that was associated with girls, long considered a peaceful/serene/trustworthy color, which is why all the old paintings of the Madonna had her in a blue dress/shawl/whatever so that medieval and renaissance audiences wouldn't get gender confused and why wedding dresses before Queen Victoria were all blue.

*And now you know~*

It's also true that calling a guy feminine or a girl masculine means approximately bugger all. It only means something in this context if you assume that girls are inherently inferior intellectually.

:D How's the wife?

Don't recall if I'd ever heard of the guy, to be honest.

He wasn't talking about her role as a woman, but as an apologist for Eric Holder and Obama.

2 points.

1st - He had referred to her as a 'stooge for the Left', and clearly was implying that she was a blind sycophant, and would not sign the petition , despite all the evidence that A.G. Holder had indeed lied.

2nd It was Ms Holder who first told HIM to ' shut up ', to which he replied in like fashion.

The finger pointing was asinine, and childish theatre on his part.

M.K. Ham was right. He was on the right side per the merits of his argument, but crossed the line.

Well, I'm not liberal. But I was teasing a little bit.

For context, my dad says stuff about women and race all the time as a joke. So I've learned to tease back on most things he says. And my mom tends to take everything he says seriously, so... See my response.

I probably shouldn't assume all family dynamics are like my family in retrospect. So I shouldn't assume your wife is personality-wise like my mother. I guess I got that vibe somehow, sorry about that.

It's difficult to identify as any political ideology when you're paranoid about all of them.

Also I'm capricious and whimsical as hell so beyond being kind of anti-war and having a grumpy anti-nihilistic worldview with a tendency towards anarchism I might change how I think about something from day to day. Poor Auraptor and PN caught me on a day where I feel like the worst kind of militant feminist.
