Finally the Zimmerman jury has been picked and it is 6 women.

What do you guys think? Did his defense team succeed in stacking the deck?
Or were these the best 6 people available for jury duty? What do you think his defense team do the right thing?

Don't send me hate mail. I think that women, without question, can do the job. But I somehow feel they picked this way as a form of courtroom strategy.

Opening statements are set for Monday.

I find it curious that a murder trial has only 6 jurors.

Can't recall a high profile case like this where ALL the jurors are of the same sex.

( But then, I'm not a trial junkie )

5 white women, and 3 of the 6 own guns ? Is that correct ?

My first impression is that this favors the prosecution, as women are likely to be more sympathetic to the dead teenager than a guy defending himself.

Of course this is the result of courtroom strategy. The thing is, both sides play the same game. It seems a bit unusual, at first glance, but if I had to guess, I'd say the prosecution has a slight edge. Might be wrong.

I'm sure Al Sharpton will be in the courtroom winking at them and blowing them kisses...just before they drag him out and throw him down the courthouse steps. MSNBC will cover this every night, ALL their pinko hosts will spend the first half of their show yacking about it.

Have you seen Sharpton lately? He looks like a brown medical school skeleton in a fright wig.

I'm not surprised to see an all-female jury for this case. I've been called half a dozen times in recent years to serve on a Florida jury. A couple of times I actually wanted to be on the jury because the case was serious and interesting. I answered the interview questions honestly, but each time I was not selected and neither were most of the men. It seems that for some reason both the prosecutors and the defense teams prefer female jurors. Perhaps they think men are more rigid in their beliefs, and women are more open-minded and persuadable to their side.

... I remember one time there was a very young lady prosecutor from the State Attorney's office. She was absolutely gorgeous and had long blonde hair. I was mesmorized. I sat there and stared at her like a teenager in heat, hanging on every word. When she spoke to me, my voice quivered and I could barely get out any words. But we had great eye contact! I thought for sure she would pick me as a juror. Musta been that gross smarmy defense lawyer who put the kibosh on me.

Ruling on voice ID experts in Zimmerman trial awaited

SANFORD, Fla—A ruling on whether voice identification experts

will testify at George Zimmerman's trial is expected soon.

Circuit Judge Debra Nelson told lawyers for both sides Friday

morning that she wanted to end court proceedings early to study

her notes from a hearing about the experts and issue her decision.

Defense lawyers are trying to keep a state witness from testifying

that he can hear Trayvon Martin screaming stop in the background

of a 911 call.

I particularly love this phrase, which I've also seen elsewhere.

"Martin was black, and Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic."

Sort'a like, "Well, he says he's Hispanic, but you know he's really Whitey.

Hmmm.

"Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic."

He is Hispanic only on his mother's side. He definitely looks

Hispanic to me. I wonder why he doesn't identify with his father?

Hispanic doesn't let him off the hook for profiling. Profiling

comes from bigotry, or where hoodies are seen, judging a book

by its cover = pre-judice. I suspect Hispanics are as prone to

such error in judgement as any other ethnic group.

If he would suddenly claim to be white, I'd point my boney finger

& say, "No, George. You are Hispanic." He can't win with me.

BTW, here in CA, Mexicans are not a different flavor of Whitey.

They're a different flavor of NA Indian. They only speak Spanish.

I watched the opening statement from the prosecutor this morning, and the first word out of his mouth was "Fucking". It was on MSNBC and I couldn't believe what I heard. Then he said it again, on live tv. All of a sudden Chuck Todd appeared on the screen and apologized to the viewers for letting the profanity go out on the air. He then said MSNBC would use a 7 second delay so it would not happen again. And then it happened again! The prosecutor said "Fucking". No delay and edit had been used. When the fourth time came around the dump switch was firmly in place, but by then the utter hilarity of the moment had passed.

On another note, the lead defense attorney opened with a knock-knock joke to the jury. But it bombed, bombed badly. Imagine paying all the money you have and don't have in the world to your attorney only to see him tell a lame joke on day one? Like something out of My Cousin Vinny.

Actually, profiling comes from the Govt. It has zero to do w/ bigotry, and more to do w/ trying to target areas where the most crime occurs, and directing resources ( govt funds ) to those areas which need the most help. Sadly, in our PC crazed society, what was intended to HELP those areas where crime was the worst, has become twisted into being a bad thing. It isn't.

[Purely off-topic: A side note to Kiki]

Holy-moley, Batman! You are right, Kiki!

2010 Census, Question #6, "What is this person's race?"

The first three choices are "White, Black African Am or Negro, & American Indian or

Alaska Native (print name of principle tribe)" followed by a row of boxes to write in.

Below this, there are some more choices, mostly Asian & Islanders.

In CAlif, there are many Native Americans who prefer to be recognized as "Indians," not

white or black.

But ...

Fox News Latino

http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/lifestyle/2011/09/29/census-more-lati
nos-list-themselves-as-white
/

"More Hispanics are listing their race as white, according to the U.S. Census.

"The shift is due to recent census changes that emphasize "Hispanic" as an ethnicity,

not a race. While the U.S. government first made this distinction in 1980, many Latinos

continued to use the "some other race" box to establish a Hispanic identity.

In a switch, the 2010 census forms specifically instructed Latinos that Hispanic origins

are not races and to select a recognized category such as white or black."
..... ..... .....

Hispanic is an ethnicity-not-a-race for true. A good many Mexicans look Anglo & no

doubt are. The vast majority that I've met look Native American. And they are.

If so many of them are checking the White box instead of the American Indian box,

that rather pisses me off. Have some racial pride, people!

Does the word "American" confuse them? Well, to me, Mexico, Canada, Panama, etc.,

are all part of America. The USA is only a Small part of (North) America.

Indians to me.

The prosecutor, Mr. Guy, cleverly and profanely introduced the charged hateful words of a man who was clearly on a mission - get the "fucking assholes" who always get away with it.

Brilliant move on his part. The jury got to hear his own words and he set the tone for the defense to take "cover." The emotion of such words will stick in the minds of those 6 jurors, and the defense comes back with a lame joke. Clearly they have no clue! That he had to back pedal and apologize for his stupidity and lack of both sensitivity (much like his client), and imagination.

As Bugs Bunny would say "What a Maroon!"

I wasn't questioning it, as to suggest there was some special rules which only apply to this case. I was merely commenting as to the fact I'd not heard of such a low number for a murder case. Might be quite common, I just don't recall that being the case.

The F Bomb.

I haven't had a working TV in the house for 2 years or so.

So I won't be watching the Zimmerman trial. Nor would I, as

I don't have the patience. Will have to read about it ... &

I'm a poor reader too.

Prosecuting attorney John Guy kept dropping the F-bomb during

his opening address. Me: What the heck is wrong with this man?

Does he want to lose the case before it starts?

But he had a reason for it. Each of Guy's profanities was an

exact quote of what George Zimmerman said to the Sanford police

dispatcher while he, George, watched Trayvon Martin, but hadn't

met him yet.

Does Zimmerman tell the dispatcher of Martin's suspicious behavior?

Did the effing kid try people's doors, try to enter their garages?

Can anyone tell me whether Martin did even one suspicious thing?

How did George know that Trayvon was an fucker?

Hopefully, he will explain this to us.

The state's two main witnesses didn't do well for their case today, and one of them may have blown it for the prosecution. Zimmerman may yet walk.

Sadly, in our PC crazed society, what was intended to HELP those areas where crime was the worst, has become twisted into being a bad thing. It isn't.

So would it be beneficial, for instance, in investigating various groups applying for tax-exempt status with the IRS?

For some inexplicable reason, you're trying to interject the biased, targeting of groups by a President who has called fellow Americans a 'threat to democracy', to this murder case.

Actually, I'm attempting to apply situational ethics, using one situation to show how concepts can be applied in other situations. That's probably why you find it "inexplicable", but for the record, just because you can't understand something, that doesn't make in inexplicable. You have a bad habit of using your ignorance as a yardstick for others' intelligence. We're not all from you (red)neck of the (back)woods, y'know.

Also, there's no evidence that there even WAS any "biased targeting of groups", and none whatsoever that any imagined targeting of said groups was ever done by this president.

Swing and a(nother) miss, child.

You are right, Au. I used "profiling" incorrectly. I see it as

a useful tool when used objectively. Or so it seemed a

couple of decades ago, when I did watch TV ... it was so

often used to narrow down the list of suspects and so to

catch The Bad Guy. They (FBI) had a psychological profile

for every kind of perp.

No problem, and I wasn't suggesting that you were questioning it, but it is rather unusual for a murder case. A low number indeed!

Depending on how strong the State's case turns out to be, he may need to take the stand and explain himself. You do bring up some mighty important questions, which may yet be revealed in the coming days, just what was this young man doing that caused Zimmerman to stalk Martin?

I heard that Zimmerman had a previous restraining order, it was unclear, or should I say, the reporter was unclear in his report as to the five W's.
Needless to say that Zimmerman over-reacted to a harmless walk through a neighborhood where Martin had business.
