I think it was the wrong idea to put up a thread for "insults"; it's obvious how our right-wing posters get around that by how it's been argued what "is" and what "isn't" an "insult.

So I'll offer this: How about a thread for nastiness? In other words, to highlight just how often people quite deliberately snark at others, put them down, denegrate them. Whatever wording you care to put it under, IT is what's at the root of the unpleasantness of RWED, and it's what turns people off. It's about blatantly dissing someone, with no effort at honesty or decency.

The worst lately seems to be coming from Jong, who appears to have decided not to even TRY anymore, he's just gone blatantly ugly and immediately doubles or triples down:

He's even going after Byte, calling her a "lib vulture", when Byte has shown no indication of being a liberal that I've ever seen, and in response to her jokingly TEASING him (the tease was blatantly obvious and kinda cute, Byte, but he seems to be so far gone he can't even recognize a joke anymore...).

Note how this one escalates instantly from a mild snark by Kiki:

Kiki: I think he was home on a Monday after a major bender during the weekend, hoping to get over the hangover in time to credibly show up to work on Tuesday and not be TOO obviously shaky. Only he didn't get to the 'do not drink on Monday' part. Which is why he showed up here, non-stop posting on what SHOULD have been a workday, incoherent, like usual. I wonder if I can annoy him enough to keep him drinking and help him into a complete tailspin.


Jong stands out currently, but he's a reflection of what goes on every day. There are damned few of what I would call "discussions" that actually go on here. What I see these days is more like exchanges such as these, and it's become a real turn off. I've been trying to be more civil and make my replies more civil, but there seems to be no point, the ugliness here is just too damned prevalent for there to be any possibility of actual debate between those who disagree. It's working pretty well for them, seems to me. Aside from those ornery enough to go tit for tat like Mark, Kiki, Sig, Mike, I see very little from any of our more civil members, and they're finally managing to make ME less willing to sift through the bullshit for anything worth responding to. This place is starting to go the way of the OB, sadly.

I tried to defuse Jong's comment to 1kiki with humour, and it seemed to mostly work once he realized I wasn't attacking him. So I wouldn't really put my interaction with Jong up there.

And Jong's was reacting to something insulting 1kiki said, though it really did escalate like a wildfire when he posted back.

It felt like there was kind of a truce around here for a couple of weeks, but maybe that was wishful thinking. In any case it's definitely broken now.

I'm pretty shocked about some of the comments I've seen, and I even got in on the battlefield when I accused AURaptor of trolling.

So I'm putting that here. I accused AuRaptor of trolling, which was nasty and unfair. I was just shocked by what he said/is continuing to say, and it was a knee jerk reaction.

I, too, felt like things mellowed out a bit for a while there, and now find it such that I don't even READ a lot of threads, or stop reading when I see where they're going. I'm spending a lot less time here, which is no doubt exactly what is intended and probably has been since Jong started his thread-festing, so they're achieving their goal in that respect.

As for Jong, he's responsible for his reaction to what you wrote, we all are. I see Jong as being completely beyond the pale currently, for whatever reason, and I'm not afraid to say so. You DID try, QUITE obviously to everyone, to inject some humor and GENTLE teasing, and he went right off the cliff; that appears to be his modus operandi currently. HOW we choose to react to nastiness is on us, not on the other person, and Jong has escalated beyond any sense of civility each time lately.

The idea of "15 to 1" is completely insane; it's easy enough to count up who is deliberately nastiest on each "side" if one wants to:

Mark, Kiki, Mike, Sig

Jong, Rap, Geezer, Whozit

Off the top of my head, those are easily the worst offenders who are here regularly, and pretty evenly matched. I'm trying not to come down among the worst of the worst and rather clarify my points or defend myself, but yeah, sometimes I belong in the same category.

There's nobody else (without thinking and looking around more) who's here as regularly who belongs in either category. So "15 to 1" is a clear indication of how over-the-top Jong is currently choosing to be.

One can also make the argument that when something is stupid, calling it such is not nasty. Rap's comment that "Niki will vilify Christianity for the exact same thing for which she gives Islam a complete pass" was a total lie on both counts; I didn't not vilify CHRISTIANITY and I have never given Islam a passs. Nonetheless, what one chooses to view as "nasty" is subjective, I have no complaint. In my opinion, calling two obvious, blatant and nasty lies stupid and trolling is appropriate.

And lastly, anyone can choose to put up a post about anything they like, anyone else can disagree if they choose, but there's no rules about what "should" be posted here.

From Auraptor's perspective, he probably believes what he says about you, because I don't think he fully understands the position many of us have on Muslims, and I also am not sure he wants to, because he dislikes our opinions so much. So to AURaptor, what he said does not seem to him like an obvious or blatant falsehood, and he can't be considered to have been trolling.

I think you'd have a stronger argument if you looked at what he said to Magons, which I think he was aware of what he was saying at the time. But even though I'm sure he knew what he meant, I'm not sure he realized the full implications, which is why he's trying to defend it as that he meant something else. That may be the closest thing to an apology we might ever see on that matter.

Secondly, I think that if we justify the insults that we give out, call them "appropriate," then it undermines the apparent intentions of threads like this, much like how you complained that "the right wing" was trying to redefine what constitutes an insult.

I understand righteous anger and outrage, as I have felt that numerous times in my experience here. But we must always be careful to not let rightful anger at insults said make us feel like any retaliation we might make would be justified.

This is what is very likely one of the main factors in this seemingly insurmountable gap in communication between sides here. We must be self aware and hold ourselves accountable for our actions or what we say before we can ever hope for a resolution.

I respect your opinion; mine differs. From my long-term observations, Rap is quite content to play the contrarian and make statements about people here he fully well knows not to be true.

And I DO hold myself accountable, and make a sincere effort not to be nearly as nasty to others as they are to me. It changes nothing in the vitriol I receive, but I choose to continue to make the attempt.

I will call out another blatant lie: "If she didn't spend so much time trolling "hate Conservatives" sites, she probably wouldn't have heard of CDD either". I've listed numerous times the various websites I check in looking for interesting threads to put up; Geezer's hatred of me is as blind and on a par with Jongs, obviously, as is his willingness to lie about me4.

Plus people were being mean to little rappy especially by ignoring him, and jongsie had to support his little troll buddy, like he always does.

BTW - I don't post things JUST to be nasty. They are my honest opinions. So, the choice is lie and be 'nice', or post my honest opinion and be 'nasty'. My choice.

As far as Rap's remarks, I neither "mocked" CDD (I decried it), nor have I ever "ignored" the unconscionable attitudes/actions of some fundamentalist Muslims toward women. Both are untrue. That his condescending remark and his obviously misogynistic "NEED to get laid" are neither to him merely illustrates how his mind works, not reality.

I can't do anything about Jong except, like his ilk, ignore and endure him. I wish he'd get help; I shudder to imagine what the landscape inside his brain must be like to live with, and nobody should live like that.

I don't care about what is happening with Jong. Thing is behaviour like that tends to push people away from this forum and this site. As it is now the number of people on here is pretty low.

We've had Pirate News and kaneman and all sorts of other colourful characters before this. We've weathered it before.

It's a site about a decade old tv show. At this point people could start posting porn everywhere and I'm not sure it would change anything, we're already probably below a minimum sustainable population and the only people left are the die hards.

I think all posts about troubling cult-like groups and practices among larger more mainstream religions are important. Be it Muslims stoning women victims, Christianity and some of its first world oddities, Buddhism and conflicts in the far east and Asia Minor, Hindus burning wives on funeral pyres and attacking women on buses and etc.

If you want to cover Muslims while Niki/Sig/Magons/Mal4Prez/NOBC/kpo/anyone covers the others, then by all means.

The point I was making is that both sides provide a useful service by posting both sides of this issue. By one side focusing on one religion and the other side focusing on others, we get a balanced spread overall. Just have to look at the big picture.

One side can't be expected to post about concerns of the other side or cover certain religions if those topics don't interest them.

Gee, I missed all those latest. I must be reading the right threads! Apparently you have joined the ranks of Kiki and myself as "women Jong hates so much he can't control himself". I'm not sure if congratulations are in order or not... ;o) Mostly it's sad; Kiki and I do get pretty heated, but you're so much more civil, I can't imagine what you did to incur his vitriol to such an extent. Then again, the way he is now, maybe you didn't do anything at all...

I've kind of given up; there was a time, when Byte was in the discussion, when it seemed just possibly hopeful that pointing out how nasty people were would have some kind of effect. Since Jong has decided to just bounce off the walls and troll threads just to be as nasty as humanly possible, all the time, it doesn't seem worth the effort anymore. There's just too much, and it's mostly him.

All I can do is feel sorry for him and get on with it; he's not worth the attention and he obviously hates HIMSELF more than anyone else, so all he's worth is pity. JMHO.
