Texas Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, vowed to filibuster the abortion bill, Senate Bill 5, when it hit the floor for a vote. The abortion bill passed the House on Monday and returned to the state Senate for a vote, but the special legislation will end at midnight on Tuesday.

Davis is no stranger to a filibuster and has to constantly talk for 13 hours in order to prevent a vote on the abortion bill, thus defeating it. Democrats are in the minority in the Senate, and the filibuster is the only way for the Democrats to defeat the bill.

The abortion bill was passed by the House early Monday morning. SB-5 would ban abortions after 20 weeks and require doctors performing the procedures to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic, and abortions would have to be performed at a surgery clinic. Hundreds of protesters were on hand during the House vote as Democrats tried to debate and stall the bill’s passage.

The opponents of SB-5 argue the bill would effectively close the vast majority of abortion clinics in Texas while women in rural areas of Texas would need to travel great distances to find a clinic. The bill’s passage could lead to unsafe medical practices and put women at risk.

The Senate would need to vote on the bill before midnight on Tuesday, which marks the deadline of the special session ordered by Texas Governor Rick Perry. Davis announced her plans to filibuster the bill, effectively delaying the vote and defeating it.

Seriously, is anyone watching this thing? I can't watch a long stretch at once, but I've been checking in regularly. This woman is amazing, and the support she's gotten from her fellow Dems is awesome.

Go her. This is what a filibuster SHOULD be.

Looks like they managed to shove through some "technicalities" to end her filibuster. Keep protesting!

No doubt, as she made clear, this bull goes against the Constitutional rights of women and, even if it passes, it will be challenged in court.

And Wendy Davis just sky rocketed. Keep your eyes on her. This woman is bright and passionate and carried herself brilliantly.

So, how long until Texas goes blue? ;)

Question of fact: Don't Democrats hold 51 or 52 of the 100 seats in the Senate, which makes them a simple majority, not a minority, although they do not have the 60 seat supermajority necessary to control the house?

Texas is heading that way, and stunts like the one the Republicans just tried are doing a wonderful job of helping that along.

BTW, the GOP legislators in the Texas legislature have already said that the vote at the last minute last night didn't follow proper procedures, and is therefore moot. Also, it's just been reported that *someone* in the legislature has altered computer records to attempt to show that the vote DID pass before midnight.

I'm sure all our right-wing friends will join me in calling for a full investigation into this vote-rigging scandal.

I went to bed before the end of this. Sounds like it was hella dramatic!

Yes, Mike, this is exactly the kind of thing that is shrinking the Republican Party. It's so funny, they're having these conferences talking about updating their presentation and their databases and such. They are completely incapable of recognizing their real problem.

Wendy Davis gave excellent, logical, law-based arguments against this bill. They look like the biggest anti-woman chumps ever because instead of addressing her questions, they went after stupid shit like someone helping her with her back brace. Then trying to tweak the voting record? Good lord! I hadn't heard about that. Cheaters!

They really don't know how infantile (to use a mild word) they are making themselves look.

1) This was a special session, so yes, Perry did call for it.

2) He's already called for ANOTHER special session - at the expense of the taxpayers of Texas, of course. Or, as one of my best expatriate Texas friends said, "He's called for Wendy Davis to be given another 13 hours to campaign for his job!"

And yes, the push is on to draft her to run for governor.

Not only a "terrorist", but of course there were Perry's "adorable" comments about her, which we all know by now:
Quote:

Demonstrating the stark ideological divide between abortion rights supporters and opponents, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) argued Thursday that state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) should have learned more from her own life experience.

“Who are we to say that children born in the worst of circumstances can’t lead successful lives?” Perry asked in a speech at a convention held by the National Right to Life organization. “Even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She’s the daughter of as single woman, she was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas Senate. It’s just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example: that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential, and that every life matters.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/06/27/rick-p
erry-wendy-davis-should-know-better/
]

He is now, of course, backtracking and saying he was actually "praising" her--which fools nobody. But, in a new development, it's good to see the occasional Republican stand up for what's right:
Quote:

One of the most powerful Republicans in Texas, House Speaker Joe Straus, said Friday that Gov. Rick Perry’s controversial remarks about Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis were inappropriate and damaging to the GOP brand.

Straus, briefly interviewed by The Texas Tribune as he was leaving the Texas Capitol for his home in San Antonio, said Perry's comments were not helpful to Republicans because they centered on Davis in personal terms and veered away from the conversation about abortion policy.

“Disagreements over policy are important and they’re healthy, but when he crosses the line into the personal, then he damages himself and he damages the Republican Party,” Straus said. “I think now it’s our responsibility to have a civil discourse and move through this process with a respect for the rules and respect for one another,” he added.

Republicans have been expressing concerns privately that Perry’s comments are giving fuel to Democrats who say the GOP has declared a “war on women.” With his remarks Friday morning, Straus has taken those concerns public. http://www.texastribune.org/2013/06/28/straus-says-perry-crossed-line-

BTW, it's been confirmed that state GOP officials did indeed tamper with the vote record and try to change the timestamp. One important note about that: it's a felony under Texas law.

So far, I have yet to hear a single right-wing voice here or anywhere else call for a criminal investigation into this.

Why do you suppose that is?

Hmmm. Inquiring minds want to know...

BTW, I love the comments on the tennis shows amazon page. Brilliant.

But here's what I find really interesting. Gov. Perry "1-2... uh, ooops" has called that special session which no one can filibuster fro 30 days. So how much is that going to push Texas toward the blue?

Yup, will be interesting to watch Texas. Hopefully there are SOME Republicans in their government who can manage to find sanity, but they're sure turning their population against them as a party more and more.

I hadn't heard much about the shenanigans...and I don't really expect to. The day one of our righties decries illegal actions from someone on the right, I will be very surprised. Shocked, even.

But just for fun I looked it up; you're right:
Quote:

Internet Catches Texas Senate Altering Timestamp on Abortion Bill Vote

Screengrabs of the official SB5 results page captured by several wonks clearly show the record vote was called after midnight local time, and was therefore dated 6/26.

But seconds later the results page was suddenly taken down, and when it returned, the vote's date had miraculously been altered to make it seem as though it had been cast in time — on 6/25.

So what happened? Did someone tamper with official state documents? It would seem so, and that's a crime.

As Technology Policy Analyst Kathy Gill notes over at The Moderate Vote:

In my experience (I’ve done web work since 1993 or so), pages like this one are automatically generated from a database file. In other words, a person doesn’t code the page.

In order to change something like this, someone has to change the database. And things like votes and official times, they’re often (usually?) automatically generated also.

In other words, changes like this are deliberate.

Ultimately, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst conceded that the vote was three minutes too late, and SB5 was pronounced dead. http://ontd-political.livejournal.com/10676595.html#ixzz2XiYqKbWu

Nobody's going to be held accountable. Nobody's going to ask questions. It IS Texas, after all...

Yeah, it was definitely deliberate. And it will definitely not be followed up on. But it sure as hell has been noticed by a large portion of We the People. It won't be forgotten.

Here's a few words from another Texan. This is one of the reviews on the amazon site for Davis's pink running shoes that I thought was linked to up this page, but now I can't find it.

Anyway, brilliant review of shoes.

1,522 of 1,542 people found the following review helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars The best choice for me., June 27, 2013

By Yalda (Texas) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Mizuno Women's Wave Rider 16 Running Shoe (Apparel)

I was in the market for new shoes a few years back. One night I went to the shoe store and ran into this very pushy salesmen. I told him that I was browsing and not quite ready to buy yet. He wouldn't let up on his sale tactics and forcibly put a pair of shoes on me. I ran out of the store crying, not sure what to do.

Every time I would try to take them off, a man would show up out of nowhere and tell me that if I didn't want them I shouldn't have put them on in the first place. When I tried to explain they were forced upon me he would say if they were legitimately forced on me, my body would have rejected them. And if that was the case, i should have taken them off sooner. Luckily I had the means to leave the state. At which point I could finally take those shoes off.

I was squeamish about buying new shoes for many years after that incident. After much thought and deliberation with my family, I decided that the time was right. It was time to buy new running shoes. I wanted a pair I could stand in. Be proud of. That say "this is my choice and it is the right choice for me." I tried on the Mizuno women's wave rider 16. They were perfect. The fit, the style, the longevity. I feel like I can stand all day long and fight back against all the pushy salesmen when I have them on. They are the perfect choice for me and I hope you can find your choice too.
