Forecasters called for more supercharged temperatures Sunday as a heat wave gripped the Southwest, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized in serious condition

Temperatures in Las Vegas shot up to 115 degrees on Saturday afternoon, two degrees short of a record, while Phoenix baked in 119 degrees. Large swaths of California sweltered under extreme heat warnings, which are expected to last into Tuesday night — and maybe even longer.

In Death Valley — known as the hottest place on Earth — temps reached 125, according to the National Weather Service. Death Valley’s record high of 134 degrees, set nearly a century ago on July 10, 1913, stands as the planet’s highest recorded temperature.

“We will probably start to see a rise in calls Sunday and Monday as the event prolongs,” Szymanski said in a statement. “People’s bodies will be more agitated the longer the event lasts and people may require medical assistance.”

Elsewhere in Southern California, Palm Springs peaked at 122 degrees while the mercury in Lancaster hit 111 and 117 in Baker. The strip of gas stations and restaurants between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is known by travelers for the giant thermometer that often notes temperatures in the triple digits.

To make matters worse, National Weather Service meteorologists John Dumas said cooling ocean breezes haven’t been traveling far enough inland to fan the region’s overheated valleys and deserts.

In Northern California, record-breaking temperatures were recorded in Sacramento, where the high was 107 degrees; Marysville reached 109 degrees; and Stockton saw 106 degrees.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho. The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Dogs were at risk of burning their paws on scorched pavement, and airlines kept close watch on the heat for fear that it could cause flights to be delayed. http://nation.time.com/2013/06/28/weekend-heat-wave-to-bake-western-u-

This from the moron who posted in early spring that it had been a cool year, so far. Yes, winter and spring generally tend to be cooler than summer.

Congrats for figuring that out. Only took you, what? 45 years or so?

How many tries does it take you to tell your left from your right?

The fact that climate change is backed by thousands of peer-reviewed research papers with gigabytes upon gigabytes of data to back it up means nothing to them. They put it with conspiracies that have no credible evidence, many times with only some blogger or YouTube video proclaiming it as true.

Their adherence to laissez-faire markets is also telling. The historically proven failures of the laissez-faire system, with its regular cycle of booms and busts, are lost on these people. They believe with all of their hearts the fantasy that the invisible hand of the market will resolve all problems. This of course flies in the fact of history, which demonstrates that those with power will abuse it.

The paper reveals that people who reject climate change are doing it not out of any scientific basis, or even out of skepticism. They are rejecting it based on ideological principle only. As a result, arguing with them using only logic, or facts, will never work.

Nothing more need be said. We all understand.

Aw, shit. I was hoping it would cool off starting tonight. But I see the US Weather Service has extended their severe heat warning originally predicted to end tonight at 21:00 (9pm) through tomorrow 21:00 (9PM).

We had a little overcast this afternoon here in Long Beach, cooled it off quite a bit. Which was a real good thing, because it's been REALLY HOT since Thursday, and was this morning. Forecast hot thru Monday evening or maybe Tuesday.

The cats taught me a lesson: lay down as low as possible, sprawl out, sleep thru it. It worked for me. 'Course, that's the normal cat response to most everything, except dinner.

Niki, I hope the dogs are taking it well...

Koch was suffering the first couple of days, she's got that heavy husky double coat, and neither are happy. So the third day and yesterday I gave in and turned on the little window AC in the living room. They're like the cats, they lay down on the wooden floor, sprawl out and try to sleep through it. So do I, at this point, I just "stop" when it's this hot, even thinking is hard.

I get 'em out at dawn, when it's coolest, but that's it and we do short runs. Actually joined our weekend running group yesterday and Koch shocked me. I'd run 'em at the Ponds at dawn ('cuz the group runs at 7:30, way after sunup), then drove up there to see how it went. It was in the low 60s and a shady trail, so I figured what the hell. She was a real firecracker, ran like crazy! The guys haven't had a real run since it started, so I guess she just had to get it out of her system. Crapped them out nicely for the rest of the day. Choey bought all the dogs frozen bones the day before, and she didn't budge off the couch (right under the AC) all day, chewed the bone for hours then slept and slept and slept...

We aren't forecast for it to break until Tuesday, either; nobody is, that's been the warning since the start. When it goes on this long, it reeeely sux! We didn't hit 100 yesterday, thankfully, and have some overcast here this morning, too, so at least that cuts the sun.

Like I said, I only sleep an hour or so at a time, even in the Outback with the fan on, then I end up falling asleep in my recliner during the day, 'cuz the little AC keeps that room a bit better anyway.

Even the birds and squirrels aren't eating much, about half what they do on a normal day, and we only see 'em morning and evening. Everything is just dead still, not even much of a breeze most of the time. Only two more days to go...then hopefully some relief...

Highs in Las Vegas hit 117 on Sunday. This tied the all-time record for the city, first set in 1942 and tied in 2005, the National Weather Service reported.

The reason isn't just the oppressive heat that is plaguing the region: It's the fact it is expected to hang around, and possibly even get worse, over the next few days.

Las Vegas will remain under an excessive heat warning until Thursday night, as will Death Valley.

Death Valley, California, resident Mike Wood says he's used to the heat. But when his running shoes begin to melt, he starts to pay attention.

"The ground temperatures here can approach a 100 degrees so you're talking about pretty much boiling the shoes ... everything that kind of holds the shoe together kind of comes apart," Wood said. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/01/us/southwest-heat/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

The mercury rocketed to 128 degrees Sunday in Death Valley National Park, the National Weather Service said, tying the record for the hottest June day anywhere in the country.

But the Los Angeles Times reported that the National Park Service thermometer — 200 yards away — recorded a temperature of 129.9, which shatters the record for June.

In Las Vegas, the temperature shot up to 117 degrees to tie the city’s record high and to cause more discomfort for residents and tourists in the sprawling desert city.

Since record-keeping began in Las Vegas in 1937, the only other times the temperature reached 117 degrees were on July 19, 2005, and July 24, 1942, according to the National Weather Service.

In Utah, a record 105-degree heat caused an interstate on-ramp to buckle in Salt Lake City, and hampered firefighters in their battle against three wildfires. The Interstate 215 on-ramp had to be closed for four hours Saturday night after a short section of it expanded, Utah Department of Transportation spokesman John Gleason said.

The 119-degree high in Phoenix on Saturday marked the fourth-hottest day in metro Phoenix since authorities started keeping temperature records more than 110 years ago. Several Southern California communities set same-day record highs Saturday including Palm Springs, where the mercury peaked at 122 degrees. In Northern California, Redding reported a high of 110, Sacramento had 107 while Fresno saw 109. http://nation.time.com/2013/06/28/weekend-heat-wave-to-bake-western-u-

Wasn't sure in which of niki's US Heat Wave threads I had posted .

'twas this one.

The SE is still enjoying a " mild " summer, and an end to the most recent drought conditions.

Out west, high pressure + long hrs of daylight + very dry conditions = a bad few days. Hopefully it won't last too long.

But yeah... It's summer. No real shocker.

And any moron can still see that, overall, it's been a cooler than average year.

Glad the dogs got a chance for a little fun.

It's overcast this morning in Long beach, so cool and damp. It'll burn off, I expect, but it's a nice break from yesterday.

We had a SHRED of fog in the Bay this morning, but gone before we knew it. Hotter than yesterday...pffft. Now forecast not to break for US at least until Thursday. Unprecedented.

As for Rap, we all know about his delusion. We all know he'd rather die than ever admit that there's anything unusual about a Summer where records are breaking almost hourly all across the West and Southwest. And we all know why.

No sense in admitting that which isn't true.

Kinda like God™. Oh sure, I'd ' fit in ' more /w the dumb masses, but it wouldn't make it any more real.

Same w/ this cult.
