"San Diego Mayor Bob Filner apologized on Thursday for his treatment of women and vowed to change his behavior after admitting “I need help.”

“I have reached into my heart and soul and realize I must and will change my behavior," Filner said, indicating that he would not step down amid calls for his resignation over sexual harassment claims.

Filner, 70, a Democrat who was elected in November after 10 terms in Congress, said that he and his staff would take the sexual harassment training offered by the city, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"As someone who has spent a lifetime fighting for equality for all people, I am embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them,” he said in a DVD released to news organizations.

San Diego residents, he said, had “every right to be disappointed” in him, but that "you give me an opportunity to prove I am capable of change, so that the vision I have for our city's future can be realized."

Filner's admission came just hours after an emotional news conference in which three longtime friends and supporters called on him to resign for what one called "truly reprehensible" behavior toward women.

Although no details were given about the alleged harassment, former City Councilwoman Donna Frye and two lawyers — Marco Gonzalez and Cory Briggs — said they would help the women should they come forward and file lawsuits.

Frye said the women were too scared to speak.

"When you're ready to file lawsuits, I'll be standing in court," Briggs said, according to the Times.

"The mayor is in control of the script," Gonzalez said at the news conference. "The next chapter will largely be defined by his response."

They said the alleged victims did not want to be identified. Briggs asked reporters not to attempt to learn the women's identities or interview them, the Times reports.

Briggs, Gonzalez and Frye each sent letters to Filner on Wednesday, demanding that he resign, according to the Times."

The 70 year old dirtbag vows to change his ways and seek help....but he won't resign. Of course not, he's enjoyed his own little personal 'war on women' for decades.

What the hell? First a whimpering Dustin Hoffman whines for a lifetime of ignoring ugly chicks, now this? What a lesson. Why not be a real man FIRST, & not some arrogant dick, then you won't HAVE to cry croc tears in your old age.

Sometimes you can have regrets about certain things in your life even if you weren't always an arrogant dick about them. As you get older it's amazing the number of youthful memories about decisions and actions you made that just pop into your head, especially when you're trying to fall asleep.

Hoffman was describing playing his character in Tootsie and how gave him some insight into the experience of women and how they are judged on appearances. I don't think there is anything wrong with demonstrating regret over past behaviour once you have greater understanding on what you have done. I think its a good thing. Maybe you could try it sometime.

Good thing then that Hoffman got that part in the movie. Otherwise I suppose he'd never know anything about how women feel about certain things like their appearance. Gee it must be great to be an actor.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

This from a guy whose wet dreams consist of being stuck in an elevator with 14-year old girls, and taking female movie stars from behind by surprise? *hands rappy a tissue so he can dry himself off*

This from a guy who calls women all kinds of unflattering names online, and whose main concern about female politicians is how they look?

Show me up when I spill vileness, and I'll happily change my ways. My intent is to discuss issues and learn new things, not to exchange insults with people I'll never meet.

Yeah, that's the story he's giving NOW. But what about before Tootsie ? Or right after it came out ? Did we hear any of that glorious revelation ? Hell no. 31 years since that movie came out, and we're hearing this tearful confession NOW ?

Please.

I'd show regret over my past behavior if I HAD any regret.

Yes, this.

The OP and our cons' reaction to it links right back to the "truest selves" thread. No one is born perfect, we all take on the traits of our parents and those who surround us when we are young. Good traits and bad traits. Some people keep their eyes and minds open and learn to overcome the bad traits.

Other people, I'm looking at you Rappy (Jong has bigger issues IMHO) think ever admitting to being wrong means failing and being a loser. This guarantees that the Rap will remain wrong throughout his entire life. Good job that, mate!

As for the Democrat in the OP, if he's really hurt people it is not enough to just say "sorry I'll really really try to change!" If he's broken laws and damaged careers, he needs to pay for it the same as anyone else would. I hope these women follow through as they think necessary. If "sorry" is enough, ok. If they need more redress, go get him ladies!

Finally, anyone else NOT surprised that Jongs has started yet another thread about a poorly behaved Dem (without noting that at this guy is at least apologizing and attempting to change! How many of the many many Repub chauvinists do 1/10 of this?) but Jongs will never start a thread about the multitude of F-ed up Repubs?

Jongs, if you really want to go toe-to-toe with your chosen arch nemesis Niki, you have to at least try not to be so one-sided. I'm sure she can give plenty of examples of her threads that criticize Dems, praise Repubs, or are not partisan.

Can you give examples of where you're stepped outside your Faux news world?
Can you?

If you spent lots of time making movies with Barbra Streisand late in your life you'd be crying about stepping on blades of grass during your youth.

But back to the thread subject, this veteran Democrat politician said "I am embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them.”

Imagine that.... and apparently he didn't even need 'binders' to commit his misogyny!
