Hoffman was describing playing his character in Tootsie and how gave him some insight into the experience of women and how they are judged on appearances.

Sometimes you can have regrets about certain things in your life even if you weren't always an arrogant dick about them. As you get older it's amazing the number of youthful memories about decisions and actions you made that just pop into your head, especially when you're trying to fall asleep.

I don't think there is anything wrong with demonstrating regret over past behaviour once you have greater understanding on what you have done. I think its a good thing. Maybe you could try it sometime.
