I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Yes, this is an embrassing inerview. I have to hand it to Green: she didn't even blush.

Interviewers DO challenge their guests, and they can do it successfully, but only if they know what they're talking about. Oksana Boyko took Michio Kaku apart on his latest book "the Physics of the Future". She had him selling deomcracy as "the will of the people" in one minute, and then explaining that internet democracy doesn't work because the people need wise leaders who know when to ignore the "will of the people" just a few sentences later. And Dr Kaku didn't even recognize what a fool he was making of himself!

In his paean to democracy, he has also said things like "no two democracies war with each other"... which he recanted a little later. And he keeps refering to emperors and kings and queens in defense of democracy. Kings and queens... really?

Just a tiny wee little note here.

You DO realize I have on paper, zero professional qualifications, yes ?
I'm of the mind that the paper means a bit less than actual knowledge of the subject material, which of course, in this case is all but moot given that at least one participant displayed damn-near-none, but still...

I dun put so much stock in that paper, as there's plenty of pretty damn smart folk out and about in the world who can't AFFORD that paper, just sayin.

Yes, I agree. I've always been skeptical about how some people claim "expertise," as if that alone wins the argument right there. Or as if that's the only valid point of view when someone with no expertise might have brilliant insights - perhaps because they aren't shackled by the prevailing thought patterns.

But I do know what you mean. In my trade, I look like gose on paper, have zero certification or paper trail in the skills I use every day. But I been doing my job for over 30 years, in many different industries and with many companies. When looking for a job, I've gotta get past paper to face-to-face interview. Then I can usually make a truthful impression. And once-- if-- I get hired, I can usually prove my worth in the first week.

Aye, experience counts regardless of the paper - back when I was doing security on a "Ronin" basis, I bet one potentive employer I could swipe their detex clock, punch all 12 keys and put it back without being detected... he chose not to believe me, till next morning, meh heh heh.
But then I don't try to pretend or claim competence in regards to stuff I know little or nothing about either, which is giving me fits right now since I don't know jackdamnall about Radio Control equipment, frequencies, propagation and all that, and the only contact I got who does is currently blinded eyes drunk trolling feds over at Defcon, argghhh.

Anyways, the paper means little, but the interviewer clearly lacked a substantive knowledge of the subject and it shows - but what could one expect on a network whos culture PRIDES itself on ignorance ?

Yepper, dead bang bullseye.

Fox News perfectly defined, in a message short enough to go on the back of a business card.

On CNN.com today:

That religion column I mentioned above.

Reza Aslan: Why I write about Jesus

E-T-A: also, a very nice positive piece by a young, seems-to-be-Methodist lady, who has published at least one book on a religious subject, about why milleniels need a church.

Thanks but no thanks. :/

I like how people who they think they have life figured out feel like they have to give "advice" to people living very different lives from them.

And how that advice is always "you should believe what I believe! It'll make you feel better!"

I miswrote that sentence. I don't know what her book was about, her article TODAY was about the milleniels. I was using the book to show that she's a religious correspondent, and that she has some qualification for being one.

It's an opinion piece-- your choice to agree with it or not. It seemed pretty rational to me, not at all hard-core or pressuring.

re: this guy having a Phd in Sociology, and not teaching religion anywhere

from Wikipedia:

"Aslan also received a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology, focusing in the history of religion, from the University of California, Santa Barbara."

Like me: my B A is in Theatre Arts, Tech option. I'd suck as an actor, I know that, might have the talent to direct, but I sure can design and build sets and lights, and stage manage; and a lot of folks who can act or direct couldn't hammer a nail without breaking their thumbs. My specialty is a subset of the entire field, but I know plenty of theatre history, and dramatic literature, and the fundamentals of how an actor or director is supposed to do his job.

from the Drew University website:

Quote:

Wallerstein Distinguished Visiting Scholars

Through a generous grant from Jane and Bernard Wallerstein and the Johanette Wallerstein Institute, the Drew University Center on Religion, Culture & Conflict has received funding to invite distinguished scholars and public intellectuals to be in residence on Drew’s campus for varying periods of time. Distinguished Visiting Professors are people especially noted for their capacity to bring many disciplines into conversation with each other about the particular area of religion and culture in which they work. Professors interact with both students and faculty in a variety of ways and serve as important catalysts for wide-ranging interdisciplinary conversations about different aspects of cultural and religious conflict.
Dr. Reza Aslan
Current Scholar

The Wallerstein Distinguished Visiting Professor for 2012-13 is Reza Aslan,

so he was a professor there, teaching religion, last academic year, which ended in May or June. Maybe not TODAY, right NOW, THIS WEEK; but this calendar year.
