Even if this turns out to be a major blow to the global economy, I'm wondering if shutdown will provide insight into what programs really are needed and what aren't. Let's turn the collapse of our entire system into a positive thing!

This is all about Obamacare. Personally, I think the Republicans are behaving like spoiled children. Even with heavy gerrymadering of voting districts by the Repubs, they couldn't get their way through the Presidential election and the many Congressional votes, and what they're REALLY afraid of is that people will learn more about Obamacare and actually like it. So they're actually trying to thwart what even THEY enivision as "the will of the people".

I think everyone here knows I dislike Obamacare, but it needs to be improved, not destroyed, because our healthcare system was a complete clusterfuck before, and the Repubs have not offered any options except to continue the clusterfuck.

So it's a matter of "pick your poll", but by far the majority of polls show the Republicans appropriately getting most of the blame.

You make some good points:

1- Whether or not you like Obamacare, our health system is broken and desperately needs fixing. For one thing, that makes me angry, the Repubs offer no better solution, just the status quo.

2- I saw a report on Nightline that showed an American employer sending their employees to Costa Rica for medical procedures that are usually twice the amount here in the U.S. Plus they would pay the employees a bonus of $2500, pay for the trip and hotel stay. Look it up on Nightline online or You Tube, amazing.

3- I like what you said about the "will of the people" it seems that the Repubs did not factor that in. They forget that people are not that stupid, they can smell a "snake-oil salesman" a mile away. Ted Cruz is that snake-oil salesman.

4- Here's a thought: the very thing the Repubs were afraid of (or so they say) they stupidly drew attention to. Ted Cruz kept saying it, if it ever gets rolling Obamacare will succeed and millions of Americans will have health care coverage. He's riding the Tea Party wave, right wing phobia. A black president actually had the balls to introduce something different and it actually might work, perhaps not in it's current form, but it's a start.
OMG, America is changing and the Good Ole Boys network is slowly but surely being dismantled. Just think, people other than old white dudes can and do think, and implement ideas that benefit the country - not just the rich and superrich.

Rush and Bill O'Reilly are right, America is changing. Next stop a woman president, the T-Party will see to that. Cruz, Koch, Rand Paul, Ryan have only themselves to blame. Thanks guys, way to go.

One poll had it at 72%.

The question was raised: Regarding the Government shutdown, the people
hate the idea, and that percentage blame the repubs for the dumb idea.

I look at it this way: If Obamacare was so wrong for the country, and a "train wreck," then why didn't the Tea Party phonies let it run it's course of imminent failure. Then they could say "we told you so" and win in the mid-term elections. But instead we get the Harvard-educated Canadian yelling the sky is falling!

By the way, so many people tried to register for Obamacare that several websites crashed. In New York the website got 2 million hits in 8 hours.
In Kentucky, Obamacare is in full swing but the state government changed the name. It's now known as Kynnect and it's a success.

Yeah, Shiny, I got caught in that deluge. I turn 65 in a few days, so could drop my Medicare Supplemental insurance and get a cheaper policy, still with Anthem. So I did my little on-line application, but when it came to setting up the auto-pay feature, it crashed. Then their system got overloaded big time and the whole THING crashed. In order to get it in under the deadline, I had to fill out a paper form, scan and e-mail it to my rep and she faxed it to Aetna. They were that inundated by people trying to sign up the first day of Obamacare!

And yes, Ezra Klein said exactly what you did:

I'm wondering if the shutdown at all hinders the SEC and other financial regulators, and other regulators (enviro, OSHA, etc.) their ability to regulate.

BTW, there are approx. 30-40 House Republicans that are holding the country hostage, they represent approx. 15-18% of the country. Plus you have House reps that don't have the balls to oppose the Tea Party reps starting with the Big Boner Boehner. If he had any real guts he would tell them what for and push through a Clean CR and get this country back to work.

Congress does hold the purse strings, it is in the Constitution. But is also states that "to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States." Notice it says United States, not certain people within the United States. With the SHUT DOWN, are they fulfilling their Congressional duties? Please stop and think before you answer.

My guess is that the Tea Party will break ranks and declare themselves as a third entity and syphon off monies from ultra neo conservatives (ahem, Koch brothers, etc) who feel that the GOP, in it's present form, are too warm and fuzzy for their taste. This may happen sooner than you think, the mid-term elections are almost upon us......watch and wait.

One of the poorest persons I know apparently got a disability check yesterday which should keep his family for a month.

So I'm actually not sure how much really is shut down. It could just be the postal service got it to them because it was sent before the shut down - they really live in the boondocks, so it can take a while for them to get anything. Postal Service is independently funded.

And Obamacare website and sign up is still running?

But veterans aid isn't, since that's what they're negotiating now... Unless that's more showmanship.

Frem thinks the lady who tried to attack the white house might have been upset about the WIC cards. Which is a welfare aid thing, so that could be hitting people.

It's not that I'm mocking the poor, it's more I think our government might suck, but the people can always rise to the occasion. And I also don't know yet just how bad it is right now. So I'm more wait and see than hand wringing at this point.

Plus, I mean... I'm a nihilist, an anarchist, and I've got tendency to play down concern and sympathy behind complete distaste for anything sentimental. How else was I going to react?

This shutdown is the fault and responsibility of the American people. It's what they chose in 2012 when the elected 234 House Republicans and one Democratic President.

Also, people seem to think an impass like this is a bad thing. Simply put, this is a fight...and sometimes you have to have a good fight to settle some business and move on. Back when I was a kid my friend and I had an argument, it festered, boiled, and ultimately we settled it with a good fight. Then we could be friends again. People are angry...as angry as they've been since the Civil War. We need a good fight like this cause the alternative might be a bad fight like that was.

Sure, in a Civil War the Republicans would kick Democratic ass...just like last time. Hell, it'll be SO much easier then last time cause the Republicans are also Southerners which means we get the best of both worlds.

But one place they've crossed the rubicon here is showing their utter contempt for the ignorant backwater sodders who could usually be counted on to vote for them - large swathes of dirt-poor southern states (usually "red") have no State level backup and thus WIC was not paid, which on top of cutting SNAP leaves a damn lot of hungry, angry people, and sure, they're in general ignorant/stupid and kept that way by a party that depends on it, but it doesn't take a genius to make the connection and start throwing blame.

Even worse, you never short the palace guard if you're going to enrage the populace, and throwing their own staffers under the bus opens lots of opportunities and temptation for the political equivalent of some daggers through the curtain - wonder if Brutus was maybe not paid on time...

I agree with quite a bit of of what you both said, except for this: Hero, we've already HAD this fight--several times, and I don't believe it's about "the fight" or ANY individual things. Combination of fighting against anything Obama wants, and the supposed "Tea Party" desire to make the government "smaller" (or rather, smaller of things they don't want, bigger of things they DO want). I think Frem's right about what they did to libertarians, at least insofar as the REAL Tea Party, but I don't see this as any kind of "fight" that will solve anything.

It certainly, in my opinion, is the fault of the American people for electing the idiots who are behind this, unfortunately I can't argue with that, but if so, it's what's wrong with our electoral system, not all the people. JMHO.

Problem is, there ARE enough of the "American people" who have either been manipulated into believing these guys are working FOR them, or are dumb enough to think a shutdown is a good thing (and most of the latter because they've been manipulated into thinking so, without knowing the facts). So again I say yes, the electoral system; if districts weren't gerrymandered (by BOTH parties) to get bad representatives in power and keep them there; if it weren't possible for a small faction of one party to screw things up like this; if money wasn't a major factor in electoral politics/advertising/etc., it would be different. But SOME of the American People did vote these guys into office, and voted to keep them there, so there's validity in that aspect of it.

As to it being after the fact, we've been through this taking-the-country-hostage bit before; if people used their brains, they'd have voted the guys who've been doing it for, what, six years?, out of office last time around. They didn't.
