Whenever I hear serious assholes talk about their heroes, it's usually an asshole him or herself. Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin, Chuck Norris, assorted rich folk (asshole or not- it's the money that counts there)...
In essence, they do not admire character as much as achievement.

Many other folk will say Kirk, Sherlock Holmes, Wonder Woman, Mother Theresa, Jesus... in short, people of character (real or not). In many cases the hero's level of good character not easily equalled/emulated by the folk in question and in some cases it's impossible.

BUT, sometimes your heroes can suggest to you that a path is possible, a goal is attainable.
From Bruce Lee, I learned that size does not define the ability to defend one's self. From Kwai-Chang Caine I learned that humility is the best way to conduct one's self (having a hard time with that one still).
From Kirk I learned that action must be taken at times. From Picard I learned that things must be thought through. And from Janeway I learned the best of both worlds.
