A Nevada assemblyman said he would vote in favor of legislation allowing for slavery if it was something his constituents wanted him to do.

Jim Wheeler, a Republican from Gardnerville, was talking to a crowd of Storey County Republicans in August he when said “yeah I would” vote for slavery if that’s what his constituents wanted.

“That’s what a republic is about. You elected a person for your district to do your wants and wishes, not the wants and wishes of a special interest, not his own wants and wishes, yours.”

The revelation of the video drew immediate scorn, even from members of his own party.

“I don't care what point he was trying to make,” tweeted Jodi Stephens, the director of the state Senate Republican caucus. “Jim Wheeler's comments about slavery are disgusting and unacceptable.”

Gov. Brian Sandoval also condemned the remarks.

"Assemblyman Wheeler's comments are deeply offensive, and have no place in our society," Sandoval said. "He should retract his remarks and apologize.

But Wheeler’s audience in Storey County liked his message. At least one in the small crowd applauded his remark.

Asked if he regrets making the remark, Wheeler said “Well, yeah, obviously.” http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2013/oct/28/state-senator-says-hed-vot

FREMDFIRMA

Well the sentiment itself is proper, his example and execution... worse than terrible.

A representative is in fact supposed to REPRESENT their constituents, even if that means taking actions which might be morally disagreeable on a personal level, HOWEVER, there's hard limits on that in a legal sense, both on a State level and Federal, as State and Federal Constitutions set some hard and fast rules for things like basic human rights and freedoms, which are there FOR GOOD REASON - even if all too often they're ignored as politicians make laws in defiance of them or regulate themselves an end-run around the processes, which never fails to irritate me.

So while the *sentiment* is in the right context, Wheeler is still an idiot.

STORYMARK

Yes, a representative should represent - but they should also apply judgment enough to NOT blindly follow the will of their constituents when its a really, really bad idea.

Which, granted, is a damned fine line to make out.

Otherwise, why not just make everything a ballot referendum and let the constituents actually decide everything (in which case, there probably would be areas that would at least *try* to bring slavery back).

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

He regrets his remarks.

Only one applauded in a small group.

His own party rejected his bizarre position.

This is truly a non-story.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen
